Article on Donaven McCulley from the front page:

I can see sideline lateral and long pass from McCulley to a streaking DJ. Other teams will at least need to be aware or get burned.

You’re much more likely to see a short yardage / goal line offense where DM can read the DE and either hand off, keep it, or throw it.

Can't wait to see how he's utilized out there...

Should turn out to be a real nightmare for our opponents...
I suspect we will see him on occasion in the red zone where his feet can get it done. His arm isn’t a threat.

They need to focus on his transition to receiver as that is no simple feat at this level.

You know anything about Walt Bell? Very likely based on how he thinks about stuff he will try what i suggested. How is lining him up in the backfield any different than how he was used last year, at least early? How does that take advantage of one of his skills? The threat of using his arm helps the running game forces safeties away from the box and away from the los? If I was Bell that play is definitely in my playbook. Allen has state that Bell is great thinker and that kind of play fits into what he likes to run.

Unfortunately, his arm, while powerful, wasn’t terribly accurate, which is why lost his job to a walk on last year, why he came out of Spring practice no better than fourth on the QB depth chart, why he would’ve been buried on the depth chart going into and out of Fall camp, and why he’ll be catching passes instead of throwing them when we kick off against Illinois. His biggest strength under center last year was as a running threat, and that’s very likely how Walt Bell (and virtually any other competent OC) will choose to deploy him, especially when he’ll get almost no reps throwing the ball. Could they use it once or twice during the season? Sure. But it will be a rarity, at best.

This situation reminds me of the ARE - Tommy Jones experiment. The takeaway from that is getting cute with play calling because you have a WR that can throw will likely get you fired - ask Cam Cameron.

i've rewatched a couple games from last yr.

they only confirmed what i remembered from last yr.

whatever DM's problems were, accuracy wasn't one of them, nor was his arm, which has good velocity and a very natural throwing motion..

unless he can never learn the offense or make reads, he has a high ceiling at QB.

we always hear about coaches' ability to coach players up, well time to do it.

and yes, he might be really good at WR, but we need a high level QB more than a WR, and athleticism may, likely will, be a needed commodity there.

i haven't seen CB or DW, and maybe one or both of them is great.

i have watched the videos of CB and looks like DM has abilities CB doesn't, though that doesn't mean CB isn't better, or that JT isn't better, or that DW isn't better, or any one else isn't.

but pulling the plug on DM as a QB this fast makes no sense to me.

i realize JS 23 is just here to troll, so this is for everyone else.

I have a colonoscopy next week and that sounds like more fun than rewatching games from last season.

I get where you are coming from but like I said on the other side it was DMs decision and not coach Allen's so give up the idea of him at QB. I don't know what he is thinking other than probably Bazelak has three years like DM has and DM decided to move to WR. By the way, there are more positions to have a chance to make the NFL at WR.

I thought the one area he really excelled was in goal line reads. Seemed like an almost automatic TD inside the 5 when he took a shotgun snap, as he read the openings well, is big, fast and hard to bring down.

And top WR’s in the NFL are starting at $20m a yr and going up from there.

One thing I know for certain: IU fans will embrace McCulley and support his decision. I look forward to hearing the roar of the HOOSIER crowd when Donaven makes his first reception. Although the circumstances and skill sets are quite different, I think Donaven stands to become a fan favorite similar to Mitchell Paige. Go get 'em Donaven . . . we are ready to roar!

Kind of get it but Mitchell P was the small, walk on few good story. Donovan has potential I think to be a beast at WR and was a 4-star level athlete even if QB didn’t work out. But I agree IU fans will be pulling for his success ahead!

Posters that think DM doesn't have good hands are not looking at his playing basketball that needs hand eye coordination. I had a back-up QB that moved to WR because he was too good to sit on the bench and he could catch the ball well. I guess some just want to see problems that aren't really there.

You put "circumstances and skill sets are different" into better words with greater detail but still the point I was attempting to make.

Well Tom Allen thinks pretty highly of DMC as potentially given opportunities to throw the ball:

"But because of McCulley’s ability as a passer, don’t be surprised to see him get a few chances to throw the football this fall.

“We’ll still have packages for him in that opportunity (to throw) because of his skill set that he brings to our football team, and it’s all about getting your best players on the field,” Allen said of the plan for McCulley this season."

How often that heppens we'll see but it will happen, perhaps more than you think.
