Are Trump's beautiful tariffs

Like gold in electronics, Bitcoin has other uses. You can disassemble a Bitcoin and sell the ones and zeros when we hit a shortage of those two numbers.

Without those precious bits it makes about as much sense as buying Enron or Bernie Madoff.
You never learn.

Tell 'em @snarlcakes

Bit 4 life
You can't tariff my big beautiful Bitcoin. It's the most beautiful thing in the world. If the stock market is too volatile for you, perhaps you would be a little more comfortable with the greatest asset ever😉

In all seriousness Bitcoin will eventually become a safe haven in these types of situations. Not saying it will this time, but it has performed incredibly well this week. The market will eventually sniff it out.

Supposedly China is actually involved in these low cost countries and still profiting from it. Like pass-through products.
We do everything in Pakistan and you can find adidas and many others there for certain products. Tons of that work in Vietnam. Rawlings does most everything in Thailand. What contracts they have with China I don’t know. A lot of these companies are pretty diverse using factories all over from Pakistan to Vietnam to Peru to Mexico

Yes, I can avoid some tariffs. I can choose to consume less or substitute for another food that wasn't tariffed. Imports account for around 15% of our GDP. I will lose out on the amount of goods and services (and/or choice) I can buy because that's what taxes do.

I agree Trump will lose in 28 if they don't scale them back or come through with a major tax cut bill. Like income taxes go to zero for people making less than 100k.
Are we just going to ignore the income we're going to get? Shouldn't that be part of the calculus?

Tariffs will benefit some workers incomes in the U.S. and there will be price drops in some areas.

Prices will go up after a 41 year price hike. That’s untenable for a large swath of Americans. That’s all that matters. This is beyond stupid

Seal the border
End woke
And razor sharp very targeted tariffs

And do nothing else and he’d have been a legend.

Now Dems will win everything

Good read. Trump knows exactly what he's doing.

No, even she admits the risk. Want to bet Trump cuts the deficit? Will not happen. China is the first to retaliate. I'm betting other countries grow some balls next week and decide to retaliate. The world hates Trump and countries will not be quick to capitulate.

Never underestimate the ability of other countries resolve, especially when it comes to a little temporary suffering. That is not exactly the strong suit of the average American citizen. Suffering for us is when the coffee shop closes early. This is a dangerous game they are playing.

Finally, she talks about factories coming back by next year. No factory or manufacturing facility of any scale is coming back by next year.

Of course other countries will retaliate. These are NOT reciprocal tariffs in any way, shape, or form. These are entirely unilateral with made-up twisted logic.

Even Israel will retaliate (they have a zero tariff policy and we now have tariffs against them).

Tired of winning yet?

From what I remember, the Chinse have investments in these low cost countries and use the locals for a front, in some instances.

I'm against tariffs in general and I think what we're doing is excessive.

But I'm keeping an open mind and hoping there's an ulterior motive. I don't think this level of tariffs will last, but who knows.

You don't hear the whining of Musk now, do you? The media's attention span is like that of a gnat.

I can't wait for you to herald that oil prices have come crashing down as a sign of winning.

They're not falling for a reason we should be welcoming.
And, if oil prices drop too much many U.S. producers are hosed. Their oil production is no longer profitable and they will turn off the spigot until prices go back up.

Great point. Same if we get interest rate cut after a recession. WHY things happen matter. Losing weight ain't good when it's due to cancer.

People really need to try to gain a better understanding of the whole picture of the Balance of Payments -- and why we shouldn't fret having a Current Account (trade) deficit.

We focus virtually all of our attention on the Current Account deficit -- and virtually none on the Capital Account surplus.

Basically, it's akin to looking at an organization's liabilities while ignoring its assets. If somebody saw that Apple has liabilities of $308B, and that's all they looked at, they might be inclined to think it was unhealthy. You'd think they'd at least glance over and see that they have assets of $365B.

The Trump admin used the Current Amount deficit to calculate the rates. That's why countries that don't have tariffs on us are getting them anyway.

For those who want a brief primer on Balance of Payments, and why we shouldn't ignore the Capital Account that "balances" the Current Account, here's a pretty good video. I've linked it before -- so apologies to those who already watched it.

Congratulations, dbm... you linked a twitter twit whose no doubt fact-free tweet went into never-never "not found" land in a record two minutes

Impressive!

edit: now the link works, but probably not for long

Prediction: Trump will out-retaliate every retaliator. China will be first.

If you get something that’s partly or completely from China, expect the price to double, triple, quadruple, until China backs off.

I see it. Have you had your eyes checked? Maybe add an MRI as well.
It was initially in "not found" land and now shows up.

For the moment. Often such provably false made-up crap disappears fast, especially when it fabricates quotes from an influential billionaire like Buffett
