Was surprised to find the stadium essentially in the middle of a hospital campus. Don’t see a lot of parking. Anybody been with some advice??

I've been to the campus once and not during any sporting events. From what I remember you are correct, with the location of the stadium and arena and hospital all being right there most of that is going to be reserved parking so unless you score a pass into those then you will be further away. I know near Old Capital there are some ramps that I think are public parking but its a good walk across the river to get to the stadium. There are some free lots further away that you'll hop on a shuttle to get to the stadium. If you go to the Hawkeye website for football they have a pretty good map of the available parking.

If you look the Lot 3 and Lot 11 across the river that's the general area that I parked on my visit and we walked over to the stadium.

The UI has gradually reduced the number of spaces available for gameday parking over the last decade, to the point where unless you're going to shell out a few hundred for a pass on Ebay, you won't be parking near the stadium. If you drive west in the Melrose Ave / Koser Ave / Highland Drive areas, there are a lot of houses that provide gameday parking in the $40 range and that may be your best bet. Usually a pretty good atmosphere at the houses like that, and I'm sure the home fans will treat you well.

Geez, that’s steep. I’ve been going to IU games consistently for about 15 years and have never paid for parking. We’ve got it good. What is it normally at IU? $15 or $20 in the lots?

When I went there in the mid 90s to see us win at Iowa behind Alex Smith's running, we parked a good distance east of the stadium in a residential area. We didn't pay very much for parking.

IU is currently $30 to park.

When I went several years ago, we parked in a lot in Cedar Rapids, then caught a train that let us out in the stadium parking lot. It was a hoot joking around with the fans. Friendliest B1G stadium I've visited.

He's talking about private parking.

Unless things have changed, Finkbine commuter lot and golf course parking are both $25, Hancher is free with a shuttle that takes you to the stadium (it's a haul, 2 beer walk back when open container laws were not enforced).

I’m used to walking. I park probably a mile away from Memorial Stadium to the south. I’m always looking to park away from the public and get out quick. A brisk 15 minute walk and 30 minutes later I’m home after IU games. If I’ve got to hike a bit at Iowa that’s no big deal to me.

I can tell you where not to park, don't park in the apartment lot across
from the stadium. I did that once and got towed and was attacked by
a bunch of angry locals with torches and pitchforks. LOL

Lot was in Coralville and the train was discontinued this season, post pandemic season.

You can park at Hancher on Eastside for free and take a Cambus to the of Kinnick Stadium, short walk. They will pick up after game. No cost.

One of the CrimsonCast podcastors interviewed an Iowa fan associated with Black Hearts Gold Pants. In that episode (#766, on Aug. 21) the Iowa guy covered what to expect in terms of parking, as well as tailgating and The Wave.

Free Parking in Iowa City

Have you been to Nebraska? Very friendly. Even as we were beating them.

Iowa was friendly until we beat them with ARE in Farentz's first year. Some IU guys were lifting up another guy - doing push-ups in the air, basically, Some Iowa douche game down and pushed them over. And the fans were not pleased we beat their ass.

IU fans have been spoiled over the years with regard to parking and tailgating. Spot count has been reduced with the construction of the baseball, softball and volleyball/wrestling centers...heck Cook before that. It is still the best situation in the BIG but getting tougher and more expensive whether you have assigned spots or general lot parking.

Iowa fan. I’m going to give you my take on parking. First choice should be the hancher lot. I believe it is still free and there’s a shuttle to the stadium. Not bad tailgating. Second choice is the softball lot at 1st Avenue and Highway 6 in coralville. I don’t know how much it is but it’s only a 15-20 minute walk. Don’t go anywhere near the stadium to park unless you have a pass. It’s all donor lots.

An alternative is to park and tailgate at your hotel and get an Uber. It isn’t as bad as you think before the game, a bit ugly after. At one time if you were staying at the casino in riverside Iowa there was a shuttle to the game and they sold you a tailgate package.

Iowa City is a great game day experience. If you come, don’t bag on the drink students too much. They are everywhere.

My Take park behind the field hockey field Lot 41 and 75? usually not full if ever, near Iowa sports medicine as well. You'll want to look that up. free parking and free shuttle bus to Kinnick stadium.

I have attended two games in IC. IU fans heading over should not expect the same "festival" type event you see in Btown. Tailgating is chopped up all over and you need to ride a damned shuttle or walk along way to the stadium. The river does that campus no favors. Kinnick is a decent stadium and the wave to the kids is great. IC has one of the better selections of restaurants and bars. Again, not Btown but better than most BIG campuses.

University of Iowa and UCLA have had a building war over the years between their University hospitals.

Obviously, the decision was made, not to move Iowa Stadium, built in 1929. Kinnick in 1970s had plenty of space.

The Wave is a unique bi-product of the encroachment.

Iowa is a spread out campus. East and West campuses split by the Iowa River.

Hospital compex, dorms and sports are located on West side of River.

Dorms, Arts and a lot of the University teaching is on the East Side.

Tailgating is available. It can be expensive due to urbanization.

It has helped recruiting.

In past years you could park in the Hardee's lot 107 2nd St, Coralville, IA for free and it's about a 15 minute walk to the stadium.

What has helped recruiting and recruiting for what? Football? Medical students?

Iowa fan here: You have some good options

Finkibine commuter, Dental, fieldhouse are all good options but they have a new rule. All university lots now only open 6 hrs prior to kick. We will see if that rules sticks but that is what they are going with. That means 8:30 for this game which will piss off a lot of people that normally come in at 6AM regardless of kick time. An out of the way university lot that is cool is Myrtle.

Residential lots will be parking cars all the way down Melrose at individual houses. You can probably get in for $20 and have a pretty good time with the locals.

Last option is the park and walk. You could park downtown and have some beers there and then walk to the stadium. Probably 10-15 minute walk. People also park on the Coralville strip at the Vine restaurant area and have drinks there then walk up the hill. Probably 10 mins.

Parking can be...different at Kinnick but it will also have a different vibe than a lot of other schools you will visit.

"Urbanization" ....
Can you say more about that? I am not sure I would call a crowded medical center around a football stadium with some dorms "urbanization" Aren't most of the bars and restaurants accross the river? UI has a surprisingly good selection of bars and restaurants but not in the medical center.

And again, what recruiting does this medical center around a stadium with some dorms accross the river from campus help? Athletics? Undergrads? Grad students?

Avoid I-380 and I-80 interchange and major 5 year construction and new layout project.

Most of Iowa City should be good. Reports are not a lot of construction.

We plan to stay on the Eastside of Iowa City, and either walk or Cambus to Kinnick.

Agree regarding the vibe at Kinnick. Awesome place to watch a game, really good fans, and a good vibe. It reminds me a little bit of Camp Randall, that the stadium is pretty hemmed in and tailgating/pregame activities are pretty decentralized. The "game day feel" is spread over a much larger area in Iowa City because of that fact.

To me, Iowa City feels the most like Bloomington of any town in the B1G.

When the stadium was built in 1928, it wasn't anywhere near the hospital campus. photo attributed to Alan Light on flickr.com ( Alan Light has thousands of photos on his photo stream. I don't know what he did in Hollywood but photos with himself and stars of the Golden Age. And, thousands of Hawkeye Hunks!)

The dining and bar choices are surprising. It may be the second best selection behind Btown. the tailgating being so spread out waters down the game day vibe a lot IMO.

Would definitely ask the Iowans here for up to date advice but we have been to a place called Airliner and there is a street called Debuque that has seveal joints.

Iowa City is awesome. It will not be what you will assume. We have our asshole fans but just approach it as a Hoosier here to have fun and gain an experience. You approach it that way, you will make friends. Iowa people are defensive cause we constantly are worried about perception. Iowa is actually a great place and people don't know it. Those that look at Iowa as country and uneducated get the hate. Iowa City has one of the.highest percentages of college graduates per Capita in the world. It votes 84% blue. Liberal hotspot, it isn't country. We want to show it. You are cool, you'll instantly be welcomed.

Iowa has been #1 Party School more than a few times. The admin have tried to clean it up but we know how to drink. The local govt has tried to clean up the tailgate scene. It's disjointed but the pockets can rival anyone in the conference. Finkbine golf course has good tailgating. I'd recommend making friends off the South end zone in Olive Court. Tailgating is very fun but hide the liquor. The pigs are watching but....

The Iowa football experience is a sight to behold. A very good, not blue blood program. I think Iowa can compete with blue bloods with homefield. The pundits can't be wrong, right?!? Kinnick is an experience. It's loud, the crowd is right on top of you, and one of the best home field environments in the country. The North end zone got a major rehaul and it's kind of amazing. Enjoy it, it gets loud, the kids wave is quite something, and we are selling beer in the stadium the first time outside of the suites ever. Gonna be a.big party. CoVid year has people antsy, expect a hyped environment unless the Hoosiers let the air out of the stadium with a quick start.

It's a good looking campus but a.bit spread out. The Ped Mall in Iowa City for bar scene is the only place in conference that can rival Madison. I'm telling you, if.you decide to hit up Friday night, it's a time. I went when there were less restrictions. Bars used to be 19.admitance. But it's still awesome. You'll enjoy it. Be cool.

Restaurants are actually quite good. Joseph's steakhouse for high end in the Ped. Wig and Pen deep dish pizza on the Coralville strip. They like to hire good looking co-eds for staff. The Vine is a great for wings and beer. $1 apple pie shots all day every day. Two locations, the Coralville strip is fine, but hit up the Gilbert street original location. It's dark, sports bar that has great vibes. My favorite that isnt super hyped is Donnelly's Pub in the Pedestrian Mall. Haven't been in a few years but best wings in Iowa City. meaty muthafuc&kers. They also have a great Buffalo chicken sandwich. It was the first place to be "craft beer bar" back in 2007ish. I enjoy it, my friends that never went to Iowa love it. Ped Mall is 4 square.blocks of bars. A lot of good food everywhere. A few places including Pullman Bar and Diner. supposedly a Michelin rated chef moved back and opened a restaurant in the area. He was a chef under David Chang at Momofuku and started a restaurant this past year back in his hometown. Likely good, but I can't say.

If you are a young person for bars Friday night, Sports Column, DCs, Brothers, Summit, etc. There are so many college bars. If looking for a cool older crowd, Joe's Place, Bo James, TCBs, Dublin Underground. Plenty of good places. Don't be a dick and look for a good time, plenty of people that will adopt you.

Indiana has a really good team. No one is questioning that. Iowa is really talented as well. Defensive back 7 is real good. Iowa Oline is supposed to be one of our best ever under Ferentz. 1st team all big ten RB. TE is up to standard. WRs strong. QB is the wildcard. Petras supposedly has turned a corner. Fingers crossed. Dline is the only other question mark but Iowa has replaced 3 starters each of the last two years. Been fine and excelled.each year. Kelvin Bell,.the positional coach is exceptional. It will be a battle. Iowa hasn't allowed more than 24 points in 22 consecutive games. I believe 2nd longest streak is 7 games nationally. It will be a battle. Id be nervous if this was Bloomington, but Kinnick is a true advantage.

For real, one of the more physically gifted squads Ferentz has had. Watch out for the Lbers. They have elite NfL measurables from what I have been told. Indiana wins(and they might), a big feather in their cap.

Pundits are saying Iowa returns most of their talent and Iowa lost 7 2020 starters to 53 man NFL rosters as of this post.

Im excited. Ill be honest, I think Iowa wins Saturday because of homefield. I'd be scared sh!tless if this was in Bloomington. Y'all have talent. Just feel we have that advantage. Kinnick is one of those places.

Rutgers is the oldest BIG school from 1788. Michigan is second at 1817. Indiana third at 1820. Iowa is fourth at 1847. Without Nebraska, we are the Western most school. We were the first public university to admit Men and Women onan equal basis.. back in 1867. Y'all will have a great time. Iowa City is awesome. We claim the Pork Tenderloin as a state food just like Indiana. You'll be surprised at the similarities

tenderloin? Really?

Will know more after this weekend but the tailgating Set up looks spread out. Nothing like Bloomington.

Agree with your assessment of Iowa City and the game. I think a lot of IU fans are discounting how tough of an environment Kinnick always is and the fact it will be turned up on Saturday. I think either IU will win close or lose by 10-14. We can count on the fact that Iowa will not beat themselves, will be physical, will play good special teams, and will be able to run the ball. They've done it for about twenty years under Ferentz and won't be stopping any time soon. I think IU's offensive explosiveness in the passing game will be the difference. I think IU does a lot of the same things that I mentioned about Iowa, but, at least right now, with better QB play and more playmakers on the perimeter. I think this one will either be 31-28 IU or 31-21 Iowa.

What bar/restaurant would be good to go to on Friday night?
I would say Big Grove is a pretty fun spot with very good craft beers. It is a wide open space with lots of room for people. Another place I love to go is The Vine on the strip. Their wings are delicious. Both of these keep you out of downtown on a Friday night but will be busy. I personally don't love to go downtown during game weekends to keep away from all the college kids. If you want to go downtown Airliner is a great option.

The dining and bar choices are surprising. It may be the second best selection behind Btown. the tailgating being so spread out waters down the game day vibe a lot IMO.
Tailgating at Iowa is based on what you prefer. Those of us that grew up going to Iowa games, where people and their friends get their favorite spot, like the broken up nature of the tailgating. The ambience of being in neighborhoods and not just one huge parking lot I do like, but it's not for everyone. Some prefer the large parking lot where everyone is tailgating in one spot. Doesn't make one right or wrong, just differences.

Stadium itself is great place to watch a game. Crowd is close the action and the Kinnick crowd is involved in the game. Apologies ahead of time for any jerk/drunk Iowa fans you may encounter. Vast majority of Iowa fans will be glad you are there. Safe travels to those going to the game.

Greetings my Iowa friends. What are the liquor laws on open carry there? Here in Indiana, beer can legally be consumed in public, but I heard that is not the case in Iowa. So, if I am walking from a downtown hotel, can I have a cooler backpack with beer. Can I drink it while walking up and down Melrose Ave? How about in parking lot 43 West of Kinnick? Thanks and here's to a great game!
