The Bonfire of the Vanities was okay, but the book, by Tom Wolfe, was great.

Since you asked and aren't getting any straight answers, here are some thoughts I had, just off the top of my head f course.

That’s a pretty mixed bag—some hidden gems, some cult classics, and some… not-so-great movies. Here are a few standouts worth checking out:

Worth Watching​

  • "Waiting for Guffman" (1996) – A hilarious Christopher Guest mockumentary about small-town theater. If you like "Best in Show" or "This is Spinal Tap," this is a must-watch.
  • "The Mission" (1986) – A beautifully shot historical drama with Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. Incredible cinematography and a moving story.
  • "The Science of Sleep" (2006) – Michel Gondry’s surreal, dreamlike film about love and imagination. If you liked "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," this has a similar vibe.
  • "Deathtrap" (1982) – A fun, twisty thriller with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. If you like mystery and dark humor, this is a great pick.
  • "The Year of Living Dangerously" (1982) – A tense, political drama starring Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver set in Indonesia.

Guilty Pleasures / Cult Classics​

  • "The Return of the Living Dead Part II" (1988) – Not as good as the original, but still fun for zombie horror fans.
  • "Critters 4" – Cheesy, low-budget fun, especially if you like ‘80s monster flicks.
  • "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan" (1984) – A more serious, realistic take on the Tarzan story. Great performances but slow-paced.
  • "The Phantom Tollbooth" (1970) – A trippy animated/live-action adaptation of the classic children’s book.

Probably Best to Skip​

  • "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" (2002) – A notorious sci-fi comedy flop starring Eddie Murphy.
  • "Dungeons & Dragons" (2000) – Infamously bad, but kind of fun if you love D&D and enjoy watching so-bad-it's-good movies.
  • "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990) – A huge misfire despite an all-star cast. Tom Hanks even regrets doing it.
  • "Mr. Nice Guy" (1997) – A lesser Jackie Chan movie. Some fun action, but not one of his best.

Oh yeah, one of my all-time favorite novels.

As for the films...."The Mission" was really good. "Michael Collins" was watchable. Other than that, the ones I've seen on that list were crap.

Do you mean, A Man in Full? That was a Tom Wolfe novel. There was a series based on the book this year. I suppose the series was passable if you've not read the novel, but it was pretty weak compared to the book. Bonfire of the Vanities was a terrible film, and a fantastic novel. I really enjoy Tom Wolfe.

I have debated watching it but haven’t. I really liked a man in full. I like Tom Wolfe too

If you read A Man in Full do not watch the Netflix series unless you want to see a total distortion of Wolfe’s point of view. It’s like Ford bastardizing the Mustang brand by attaching it to a dreadful EV.
