Anthony Leal is the Real Deal

While size and skill are crucial, I hope our next coach also prioritizes heart, basketball IQ, and relentless effort.

Hopefully Cav doesn't ban me for this post.
I’ll make one of his airballs, getting burned, and getting his shot blocked for ya. Don’t tempt me, my highlight videos put that shit to shame.

It's really pretty simple. Are we playing better and winning when he's played more, despite the getting burned, airballs, etc...? There's absolutely no doubt in my mind we're playing better largely because of Leal's play and his effort on D. I think the biggest thing he brings is communication and talking. He gets guys to be more aware of where the ball is and what their help responsibility is. It's outweighing his limitations and poor play. How you respond to mistakes is often what determines wins and losses and he's playing hard regardless of what happens and it's helping immensely.

Well he probably puts them in better position than woody. No argument here. Man my point is Leal doesn’t play for good teams. Show me the Leal in the SEC. When we play that caliber of team he will cost us. Watch.

That makes zero sense.

So your argument is that he shouldn't be playing for us because he wouldn't be playing for teams in a league that has 8 or 9 teams in the top 25 with 2 more getting votes.

I've never seen anyone try so hard to square up a circle.

I’m saying I don’t think he should be playing for us if we have hopes of being a contender. Pretty simple. Our ceiling is low with Leal playing 34 mins a game.

I want to be in the top 25 and expect to be, maybe you don’t. I am comparing to what I want us to be. Instead of the bubble team we are. Maybe you’re satisfied. I am not.

We're not a contender and we're not in the top 25 though. That's what I choose to bitch about, not some kid who is contributing here even though he wouldn't see the floor on a team that is a contender or top 25.

Then I have nothing to argue with you about. Many on here think Leal is the answer to us being a contender, he is not. That’s my only point. We aren’t going to the final 4 with Leal playing 34 mins a game. Under a good coach, with the same roster and Tucker playing Leal’s mins, we have a shot.

He's the current answer to winning enough games to squeak into the dance, and that's about it.

That's an indictment of the coach and staff.

Anthony is leading the Hoosiers to Dayton!

5-6 when he starts and 13-5 when he does not.

Atleast have some idea of the stats before you post dumb shit :).

Dude, we've usually gotten along but that can change.

I was truly interested and figured you'd know...

All I recall is winning a lot at the end of the season last year when he was on the floor and I'm seeing the same thing this year...

Given the silly s--t you've regularly posted on here over the past few years I don't think you have much room to be disparaging anyone else...

I 100 percent agree with Cav on the Tucker thing. The kid has talent and needs a coach who can get him to play hard and to his potential. Those are the types of kids that get you back to being a winner. I appreciate Leal’s effort, but where the hell has it been the last 4 years? He decides to show up and play the last half of the season of his career and everyone praises him. Maybe he should have focused less on being a cheerleader the past 4 years. Got so sick of seeing a Mr Basketball on the sidelines clapping, shooting bows and arrows on 3s for teammates, tucking his warm up pants in his socks, and a different hair style every game. He was a clown for 4 years. His lack of development is part of the reason we have struggled. And yes, we are a fan base that appreciates a good white kid who hustles, but it comes at the expense of kids with talent who should be on the court. Tapak, McRoberts, Suhr…those kids played hard and earned minutes. I’m not made at them. I’m frustrated with the lack of coaching where we didn’t get anything out of 4 and 5 star recruits who had to watch those kids eat up minutes. It’s been a huge problem. Great for Leal. Love his heart but where has it been? I agree with Cav. I can show u some airball videos, or him getting rejected or being clueless with where to go with the ball in the paint. Great effort on D, but I can also show u him getting beat on occasion or clapping on D and leaving a guy wide open for a 3. Yes, that happened a few games ago at home. I feel bad beating him up, but u see kids like Tucker missing out because of it. Maybe it’s Tucker’s fault, but I have to imagine it has something to do with coaching

Agreed, the SEC is a different animal with the athleticism, but my point is we are also better with Leal playing. We're not in the SEC.

Arguing with a self-important person is an exercise in futility. Don't even bother.
When did Leal really start getting minutes? The game at Ohio state? We are 5-6 since then with 2 recent wins over Penn State and Washington. I understand the feeling of us being better with him on the court but does our record back that up? Or is it an illusion?

There's not one player on the roster who turns IU into a contender, so it doesn't really matter. In any case, maybe the Hoosiers would have gone 3-8 during that stretch if Rice had averaged 34 mpg and Leal had averaged just 8 mpg. We don't know.

And/or maybe Woody wants players on the court who truly give a shit about the name on the front of the jersey.

You asked what the record was and I gave it to you. I assume it’s not what you expected. What’s the silly shit I’ve said? X and Tamar were better than gallo and Leal?

Everyone points to Tamar as the “stupid shit I say”. But that has proven to be right, soooooo expand please.

Tucker has an ok mid range game, can’t guard a chair and is delusional about his worth. His game style is dead. He wouldn’t sniff the floor at Michigan, Alabama or any top 10 SEC program. He’s exactly the type who they hope is on the opposing teams roster. He’d get benched the minute he tried that 3 inch inside the 3 point line BS.

Wanna bet he averages 10PPG next year?

On a winning or losing program? I also don’t bet. Not my style but you can book mark it. He will leave for money and will have 10 points per game while still hitting mid range shots on a .500 squad.
Leave for sure. I bet he ends up in acc or sec.

and that’s all woody. We let everyone do that. Hell I think we coach it. Drives me nuts. Mack does it every game.

You know how easy it would be in practice to say you can never take that shot? Do it your auto benched? Woody allows it and probably encourages it. He’s a moron. We have an idiot at the helm. Only a complete dipshit messes up the season to the extent he did.

He needs to get better at shooting for the sec. Way better. I watched the mizzou/Vandy game and he wouldn’t have been on the floor at the end for either team. Same for the Tenn vs Auburn game.
Coaching does wonders. He is an athletic freak. Should be great at d.

Woody likes the mid game but that shot is the “take what they give us” shot. Teams want you to take it and that’s who Tucker is. Go look at his high school film. There’s a reason he shoots 38% overall. He’s stuck in that style. Didn’t play AAU I’d say because of it. Hid a lot of his faults that way. It’s going to take a lot to overcome that. Not sold at all.

He could be great never shooting from outside 10 feet. He could average 10 on layups, dunks, and FTs. It’s obvious he has never been coached in his life. Give him pearl, see what happens.

Should Tucker be advanced enough to play significant minutes at this point in the season, over Leal? Yes, he should. But he is not. Some of that has to be on the player himself, but most of it is on the coach. None of us like it, but that is the current reality.

Given that reality, IU’s chances of winning are better with 5th-year senior Leal playing significant minutes rather than freshman Tucker. I love Tucker’s game when he flashes his talent, but at the present he is a defensive liability. (Again, coach’s fault.) Just watch Tucker when he doesn’t have the ball vs Leal when he doesn’t have the ball. The difference is unmistakable. Simply put, Leal helps the team more at this juncture than Tucker.

If pearl watches any of his tape from this year, it’ll be a hard pass.

No argument. I am mad at woody that we have to play him. That turned into me hating him I guess. I just realize what he is. A glue guy that MAYBE plays 5-10 mins for a good team. More likely 1-2.
