Picture a beautiful warm, summer day in 1979. A bright yellow Chevette with a green Carter/Mondale '76 bumper sticker glides down CR-16 in Northern Indiana. In the passenger seat sits an 8-year-old boy, wearing a t-shirt with a number but no team and white tube socks pulled up to his knees.
He's free as can be--no fascist seatbelt laws to hold him down. No sir, this boy has it all, with a mom driving him to see The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again at the Elco Theater and the two of them belting out You Needed Me as it plays in the 8-track player.
Pretty sure I could still sing every word from Murray's 1978 classic album, Let's Keep It That Way.
On the way home? Crystal Gale.
