I planted a few paw paw trees 3 years ago. They are about 8-9' now. I haven't had one single paw paw yet to eat. I have self-pollinated (don't ask), tell my yard people to stay the hell away, but nothing.
Finally, this year i had 1 single fruit growing out of all the trees, and i watched that motherfvcker every week grow. Since they ripen late summer the stress was overwhelming...then a few weeks ago i noticed a squirrel ate my lone paw paw. Do you know how many things you can make with no paw paws......that is correct, nothing. I have never even eaten one. They very well could taste like shit.

I've heard that they are hard to cultivate, that they don't fruit every year and you have to have trees that identify as male and female both. I have a shot ton in my woods, but I don't think in the 12 yrs I've been here that I have ever seen one fruit. I'm thinking of doing some apple tree grafting, heck maybe I'll try the Paw Paw as well. Good luck.

they are a strange tree. you see them all the time on hikes, but never any fruits on them or on the ground. you do need two trees to cross pollinate the male trees have a little branch at the bottom when they are excited.
I should have just gone with an apple tree

I had a weird short lived obsession with finding and eating a paw paw this year. I'd never had one before. Welp mission accomplished. One of the state parks near has a grove of them and I was able to collect a few. Very odd fruit. A mix between banana and mango. The meat is sort of custard like in texture. Pretty tasty but unique. However they are a massive pain in the ass to eat. The skin and seeds can make you sick. So they are hard to eat without making a complete mess and wasting half it. Good luck on your trees. I've read it takes a few years and some years will be better than others.

I called the authorities to seize and kill that squirrel. Let me know if they don't come through, but they seemed to love the idea.
please call them off. these squirrels are assholes, there's a reason there are no black squirrels in our neighborhood.
not that it needs to be said, but as a democrat i approve of all squirrels, even the tranny ones

on top of all that, they are only good for like a week before they rot. there is a reason they are not in groceries.

There is an annual Paw Paw festival not far from where I live and we have paw paws out the wazoo around that time. Just about everything under the sun made from paw paws, including beer, is available. The beer is sort of like a wheat beer, by the way.

Supposedly, paw paws were a favorite dessert of George Washington. They’re kind of sweet, similar to a banana but with different consistency.

Authorities were disappointed. I think the team was coming from NY State.

I like all squirrels. Although the red ones up here driving off the much bigger gray ones sort of annoys me, I like the grays.

Good luck getting some paw paws!

I wish I had planted some, never have. Next year, now that you gave me the idea. I have a small ancient apple orchard. I did plant four new ones this year. The deer ate most of the leaves though, about a month after I replanted them in mid June, they were about 4 foot high saplings and delicious apparently. I hope they make it through the winter and rebound next year.

set a google alert for NorthEast Allen County Indiana Paw Paw fest....when i get some traction i need you to be ready. I am thinking George Washington cosplay, a Miss PawPaw, a Mrs. PawPaw for all of us milf lovers, maybe some pony rides for the kiddos

In the words of famed poet, Tone Loc, 'Letz Do It'

Squirrels also eat the nearly ripe mangos off my mango tree

The solution I found was to wrap a piece of galvanized furnace pipe around the trunk of the tree. Them MF-ers try to climb up it, but fall!
