When looking at the 2021 IU OL, these stats jumped out:
Indiana’s offensive line finished 119th in the nation in Line Yards per Carry and 91st nationally in Sack Rate, putting the team near the bottom of the list in statistics related to both pass and run blocking. IIRC the OL was actually pretty healthy last year.
Watching Hiller comment on the OL was embarassing. He never really talks about working with players individually to develop their skills/techniques. He talked about "consistency" but what good is consistency if what they are doing consistently is ineffective? Or not really improving the individual player's skills?
Last night I watched a little of the GB exhibition against the Saints and Caleb Jones played left tackle in the second half quite a bit. Jones looked like he was in the best shape of his life, nearly svelte, and his footwork and use of his arms and hands/punch on pass blocking was something I never saw at IU. It's like he got coached on fundamentals for the first time, and the coaches are getting through to him what he has to do to maximize his potential. In other words, almost a total indictment of what happened with him at IU. Granted, money is a huge motivator and this is probably it for Caleb's football career if he doesn't do something there, but one wonders what motivational techniques were being used at IU. I never really felt anyone at IU really held him accountable and impressed on him what he needed to do physically and helped him with technique. What a waste.
