No. 4 Indiana Blanks IUPUI, 2-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated in-state rival IUPUI, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

With the win, IU improves to 5-0-3 on the season overall, remaining undefeated through the team's first eight matches for the 11th time in program history and for the first since 2011. IUPUI falls to 0-6-0 on the year with the defeat.

IU's Richard Ballard scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, while Tanner Thompson netted his third of the year for the Hoosiers. Rees Wedderburn and Rece Buckmaster each had assists for IU, while goalkeeper Colin Webb recorded his Big Ten-leading fifth shutout of the season.

The Hoosiers struck first in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Jaguars. After a great pass from Wedderburn put Buckmaster in space, the sophomore beat his defender to the end line turned towards goal, feeding Ballard at the top of the six-yard box for the right-footed finish.

Leading 1-0 at the break, the Hoosiers were dominant in the first half. IU out-shot the Jaguars, 17-1, in the first 45 minutes, getting six shots on goal to none for IUPUI. IU also had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-1.

In the 75th minute, Thompson secured the victory with a long distance shot, curling one in from nearly 30 yards away to give IU a winning margin of 2-0.

For the game, IU out-shot the Jaguars, 36-2, getting 10 shots on goal to none for IUPUI. Indiana held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks for the match. The team's 36 shots are the most since 2006.

The Hoosiers have posted five shutouts in the team's first eight matches for the first time since 2011 and for the fifth time since 1998. With the victory, Indiana improves to 9-0-0 in the overall series with IUPUI.

The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers will head east to face Big Ten rival Rutgers on Friday in Piscataway, N.J. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed live online on BTN Plus.

Go Hoosiers!

Nice bounce back game after NW, where IU dominated but couldn't score. Been a while since we've been scored on.

Yeah the defense is solid, that goal by Maryland should have been saved too. He makes that save 99 outta 100 times. The thing that bothers me is he puts so much emphasis on the defensive side that offensively there's not much there. If IU had less talent it would make more sense to me. This team is very good, but I'm afraid that playing one up top could cost them in the tournament.
