3 years in a row

Actually, my initial response in this thread was about the ethics of a coach blaming and firing his underlings rather than walking the plank himself. The poster was critical of Hazell while ignoring that Wilson did the exact same thing. If you want to quibble that Knorr walked into a thunder storm while Purdue's new coordinators are walking into a hurricane, I wouldn't disagree with that. One scenario requires a good umbrella and a roof over your head. The other requires high ground and abundant prayers.
I don't think it shows a lack of ethics to
These actually aren't Hazell's guys. He wasn't allowed to bring any of his staff from Kent State when he came over. He was forced to bring in Shoop and Hudson. They weren't anywhere close to his guys. Our AD wanted to bring in bigger names which clearly failed miserably.
Thanks for the clarification. I hope that if he is indeed coaching for his job that he is allowed to bring in his coaches. The administration has to trust they made the right hire and let him do his job. FWIW I don't think it showed a lack of ethics that he let coaches go.

Even with what you say, however, KW was on every hot seat list out there, and most people thought he needed to win in 2014 to keep his job. That he didn't was a testament to IU's patience with him, but hiring a new DC was a leap of faith for Knorr (though he'd already been let go at Wake and, when hired, was the DB coach at the AFA).

Pretty similar circumstances actually, though I understand why people need to see them in a different context.

This is where I think our perceptions differ. I remember CKW being on some hot lists (from national pundits), but it was generally accepted from anyone with any sense of the program, from the average IU fan to the insider, that the people making those lists were unfamiliar with the 7 year contract and the commitment to a longer opportunity than had previously been the norm at IU (and at other places). I think most people familiar with IU football knew that a 7 year contract pretty much guaranteed Wilson at least 5 years. My sense was always that those pundits were weighing Wilson's success against the typical three year opportunity, but the commitment to a long term rebuilding opportunity was explicitly stated when Wilson came.

I'll agree that getting a DC to a losing program, and to IU, and to IU with a new-ish coach that had shown improvement but had not yet met measurable goals, certainly presented challenges. I just think the mess at Purdue is on an entirely different level right now.

This makes sense. Again, what I originally took issue with was the notion that firing a coordinator was essentially an act of cowardice, and that the head coach should walk the plank, too. I don't think that applies to Hazell anymore than it applied to Wilson.

3 year Bucket domination and going Bowling.
Thanks for hosting the Bucket game and celebration PU.

Honestly, what decent coordinator is going to come work for a coach that everybody believes has a make or break year next year? Terrible for a young guy starting up, because you don't want to start your career a loser, and anybody good enough to be a good B1G coordinator will wait for a position at a place that seems to have more time to work with. Can't imagine they'll get anybody good unless they just get lucky. Really dumb Purdue administration.

It's always possible a newly proven, yet still up and coming, assistant will look at it as a chance to take charge of the program when Hazell is dismissed, I suppose.
