10am today. Social media. Keep your eyes peeled. (nm)

It would certainly be a bit of work, but it is also obviously do-able, if they want to spend the money. It seems clear Bison are not stupid, and can be motivated with positive reinforcement from handlers the Bison trust.
To me, not really a good look to eliminate 25 positions and then add a very expensive and resource-heavy live mascot, all while also needing to find $20M a year of new money to share with athletes.

There won't be a live mascot.

Maybe they shouldn't eliminate 25 positions. 1 employee makes more than those 25 did.

And those 25 made something like 3% of our yearly BTN disbursal.

The Athletic Department is very unlikely to take on the liability of that when they can just get a human who maxes out at 320 to play that role versus a live Bison who's pushing a 1,000 lbs (for a female) or 2,000 (for a male)...

I understand the enthusiasm but having a live one basically running free appears to me to be a Very Bad Idea (and I'd like to see it)...

My next best thing would be to have a couple of great looking Bison inside a tamper proof enclosure for about 3 hours prior to kickoff and about 2 hours after..., so that the youngsters could view them relatively up close...

My big concern there is pretty much the certainty that some idiot would eventually find a way to climb inside the enclosure and get his just rewards for doing so... (ending up just maimed for life if he's lucky)..,

Once again the liability factor rears its ugly head...

We have enough lawyers on here to verify whether my concerns are well founded or not...

You can probably tell me...; I think I've read you're a lawyer (apologies if I've mis-pigeon holed you) 😎
Maybe a Bison pen in Hoosiers Village? It would be great to go up and take pictures in front of them and maybe have signage giving the history of Bison in Indiana. I read somewhere once that one of the largest Bison herds in America was in Indiana…

It’s been a while since I attended a game, but during the Wilson era, the Bison running on the scoreboard before the team came out I thought was great. People didn’t understand the tie to Indiana as nothing was done to educate why it IS Indiana. If they don’t take time to educate the fanbase, they will miss the opportunity for the fans to defend it. If they defend it, they will support it. Let’s make sure people don’t need to search for why Bison’s are relevant to our Brand.

Just an opinion

That was where I imagined it (the enclosure) being "if" the area meets the space needed...

The educational opportunities for youngsters would be a must have as long as it's done well and as long the bulk of it is specific and brief enough to hold the interest of say a 6-11 year old..., along with perhaps supplemental information on the other side of the enclosure that might interest 12-115 year olds...

It's certainly seems doable as long as we contract with a reputable Bison rancher who treats their animals humanely and produces a setting for the Bison to settle in comfortably over the time frame needed...

Should be interesting to see how things work out...

My avatar approves this message 😎🇺🇸

Sure. They shouldn’t cut anything, plus spend more AND come up with $20M extra. Seems like a sound financial plan.
That would depend on their revenue, wouldn't it?

Ticket revenue is way up. TV revenue will keep going up. They happily found money to double Cig's salary and keep the assistants. They have plenty of money to buy out coaches. You think they can't find a donor to do 500 stacks a year for a Bison? I doubt it.

Not hard. On the big screen, start out with the State Seal. Slowly zoom in on the bison, then bring it to life, segueing into the bison stampeding through town and campus, then finishing with the mascot (preferably a live bison) making its entrance on the field. Cue thunderous applause...

Our intro videos have suffered from being too slow to develop - gotta start with a bang and then honor the “NO dead air” rule.

This is the way.

But considering it took them til like the 4th home game to get the “Thunderstruck” entrance right, I don’t have super high hopes.

If you have "educate" people as to why the bison is going to be the mascot, is it really such a good idea?
Deriving a mascot from what is on the state seal that 99% of the people don't even know it is there is, IMO, a stretch at best.
I have said before, if you want to use the state seal, use the guy chopping wood and he could axe Pet in his oversized head! :D

I like that idea of the axeman…. You call him Mr. Hoosier or Mr. Indiana… not a bad idea

Why is Kentucky a Wildcat?

Why is Missouri a Tiger?

Why is Michigan a Wolverine?

Why is Georgia a Bulldog?

Why is Creighton a Bluejay?

Isn't Indiana University in the business of educating?

IU fans unaware of the bison would understand it pretty quickly.

It also helps the Nick’s logo has kept the bison connection alive for the last 50 years. Yes of course everyone won’t make that connection, but many will.
What does an elephant have anything to do with Alabama or crimson tide? Making the connection is kind of irrelevant.

Big Al has a backstory.

He hates my avatar??

Has never seen the Official State Seal?

Wasn't exposed to an Indiana history course in grade school?

All in good fun Al..., All in good fun...

As far as opinions on something like this go I can easily coexist with nearly everyone's...

Bet that has you breathing a deep sigh of relief... 🤣🤣🤣🍺🇺🇸🍺

Ha, I’m talking about Alabama’s mascot Big Al, not Al Bino.

As for Al Bino, I’m hopeful he may get on board at some point in the future…

I believe in every case you used, that is the school mascot.
As in Kentucky Wildcats, Missouri Tigers - you get the idea.
Are their examples that would mimic IU's case where the name is one thing but their mascot is a totally different thing?
I can't think of any right off the top of my head. Wait, I guess Alabama would be an example.

Are you proposing that we change IU's name to the Indiana Bisons - nixing the name Hoosiers?
Or the IU Hoosier Bisons? Or the IU Hoosiers brought to you by Fred's Bison burgers? :D

In all seriousness, I don't know if I ever paid attention to the state seal until this bison mascot thing resurfaced.

I have said before, that if they do it I hope it is WELL done.
I lived through that hayseed hick character that was just embarrassing.

To address TH, I won't be buying any IU gear with a Bison on it.
If someone buys it for me well..... I MIGHT wear it.

Just can't buy into it.

I can easily think of one. Auburn
The name is Auburn “Tigers.”

So…..what does any of that have to do with releasing a bird at the beginning of games and shouting “War Damn Eagle.?”
You couldn’t have two species further apart but somewhere along the line, they did it. And now they won’t do a game without it.

It’s not about renaming the school to match the mascot. It’s about an image that is associated with the program. And, there are several schools out there that have long standing mascots that don’t remotely connect to a nickname.

When someone says “Hilltoppers”, is that a red blob that looks like a reject from the McDonald’s cast? Grimaces’s illiegitimste cousin?

Look at the bright side: if "Fred's" sponsors our mascot we'll be on track to have the healthiest tailgate spreads in the country... 😉🍺

Could be worse, we could be Maryland (the fighting Turtles)..., 🤣

After a google search, the war eagle thing could go back as far as 1892 and they deny they have two mascots.
The tiger is their mascot, the war eagle is their battle cry.

No matter what you do there will always be some people that will not be happy. For too long that meant they did nothing. I’m quite happy that IU will have a mascot and the bison is fine. It could have been anything and I would get behind it but the bison will work great.

The irony is not lost on me that several times to took people that did not want a mascot to task, saying that they thought that made IU unique.
If the Bison does become the mascot, you are just trading IU being just a few schools that doesn't have a mascot to one of a few schools that have a mascot that has nothing to do with the schools nickname.
Evidently, IU being unique due to the latter is ok but IU being unique due to the former is unacceptable.
Interesting.
