A truly fine human being, in addition to being a fine baseball player. Close friend with Jumpin Johnny Wilson, and Frank Robinson, standing up for racial equality before it was popular. His youngest son, Jimmy, was born with Downs Syndrome. At the time, most kids like that were institutionalized. There weren’t many activities in Anderson. Carl and Betty were instrumental in getting Special Olympics going there, work programs, and camps. I met the family when I worked with Jimmy at a Special Olympics camp one summer. I also went to school with their daughter. If you have not seen the documentary, The Best We’ve Got, I highly recommend it. A life well lived.
