A 35-year-old video has resurfaced and is doing the rounds on Twitter after people realised it was oddly prescient.

The recording is of former KGB operative Yuri Bezmenov explaining Russian influence and "ideological subversion".

He says:
Only about 15 per cent of time money and manpower is spent on espionage as such. The other 85 per cent is what we call ideological subversion or active measures ... or psychological warfare.

What it basically means is to change the perception of reality for every American to such an extent that despite the abundance of information, no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community and their countries.

You cannot change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information; even if you prove that white is white and black is black.

He goes on to explain that the next stage is destabilisation.

It takes only between two and five years to destabilise a nation. What matters is essentials: economy, foreign relations, defence systems.

The following stage is "crisis".

It may only take up to six weeks to bring a country to the verge of a crisis.

After the crisis, "with a violent change in power, structure and economy" you have the "period of normalisation" which may last indefinitely.

Well, they’ve got the ideal president for chaos and destabilisation. The Trump presidency seeks to lie and deny truths, call the press “fake news” deny climate change and much of science in general and tell their followers that the opposition party is out to destroy them. Not to mention their denial of Russia’s involvement in our elections and willingness to perpetuate phoney Russian narratives.

Geez, you’d almost think Trump was groomed by the KGB. D’oh!

He acts like a Russian asset. I hope someday we find out why.

Even if he’s a willing idiot, he’s super dangerous. I don’t know if he’s ever studied Russian disinformation techniques, but he uses them perfectly.

In short, it’s A) confuse reality by throwing massive amounts of disinformation B) substitute you own reality once people aren’t sure what’s real and true anymore, then C) do whatever the hell you want, because you’ve successfully bastardized the foundation of our country.

I’d bet Trump’s actions are guided by a mix of stupidity/ego and perceived gain after/during his time in office (mostly for his kids).

The guy is the very definition of “transactional”, and can’t see future consequences. He’s literally incapable of doing that- all he does is try to do what he perceives as what’s best for him. The law is not something that guides you- it’s something you use after the fact to cover for your previous actions.

Above all else, this is what makes him a unique threat to this country. Our constitution assumes two very critical things: A) that political actors would have a modicum of good faith and B) that both houses of congress act like independent arbiters, and not fan boys. B only comes into play when A is violated.

obviously, both of those assumptions have broken down (at least in the senate with respect to B). It’s insanity that it’s not crystal clear to everyone how what he did was A) way out of bounds and B) the very definition of an impeachable offense. Have you noticed that the main arguments coming from the White House are about process? That’s because the facts are completely not in their favor. When that happens, you throw up your arms and raise hell about whatever you can find. Given that the process is the same as what republicans set up previously, even that argument is complete BS.

it’s truly not all that complicated with him. Probably the easiest person to read that I’ve ever witnessed.
