One of my old fart coffee buddies was an Air Force weatherman during Viet Nam. He was stationed on Guam and was tasked with providing the weather forecasts for the daily B 52 missions. Each day he would be given a sealed envelope about the places where he was to provide a forecast. The locations were the refueling locations and the target area. These got to be routine since we hit the same places frequently. One day he opened his envelope and saw Cambodia as the target. Believing that to be a mistake he asked his superiors, all the way up to the base commanding general officer. Nobody knew anything. He believes he might have been the first person outside of the decision -makers, and White House who knew we were going to bomb Cambodia. Four days later, Kent State happened.

I asked him who gave him the envelopes. He didn’t know, they were waiting for him each day.
