Six Hoosiers Selected in 2015 MLB Draft

Indiana matches second-most draftees in school history.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Six Indiana baseball players were selected on the final day of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft as sophomore RHP Jake Kelzer, junior RHP Scott Effross, senior RHP Ryan Halstead, senior C Brad Hartong, junior RHP Christian Morris and senior RHP Luke Harrison all heard their names called on Wednesday.

IU's six draftees matched 1996 for the second-most in school history. An IU-record seven Hoosiers were drafted in 2009.

Additionally, two members of IU's signing class were taken Wednesday. Travis Herrin was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 18th round (555th overall), while Alex Krupa was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 35th round (1,045th overall).

Indiana, which has seen 15 of its players taken in the first 15 rounds since 2009, is home to 84 all-time draft picks, led by 14 in the last three years. Six Hoosiers have been selected twice while at Indiana, including Kelzer and Halstead this year.

Active Hoosiers Drafted:

RHP JAKE KELZER | Chicago Cubs | Round: 14, Pick: 413
Kelzer, the last of IU's five draft picks in 2014 (New York Yankees - 22nd round/662nd overall), was Indiana's first in 2015, selected in the 14th round by the Chicago Cubs (413th overall).

Kelzer, who led IU with 73.0 innings pitched and was second with 11 starts in 2015, owns 101 strikeouts in 42 appearances over the last two years.

The 2014 All-Big Ten Freshman team selection has a 2.54 ERA in Big Ten games, which is currently fifth all-time at Indiana.

If Kelzer chooses to return to Indiana, he will enter the 2016 season as a junior.

RHP SCOTT EFFROSS | Chicago Cubs | Round: 15, Pick: 443
The Chicago Cubs used consecutive draft picks on Hoosiers when they selected Effross 30 picks later in the 15th round (443rd overall).

IU's Opening Day starter at Stanford in 2015, Effross ranks seventh all-time at Indiana with a 2.27 career earned run average, fourth with 81 career appearances and fifth with 12 saves.

Effross, who owns a 15-8 career record at Indiana, gave up just three total runs in his last 13 appearances last season.

The Cubs have selected three Hoosiers in the last two years and 10 all-time, the most IU players selected by any MLB team. Kyle Schwarber, the fourth overall pick in 2014 by Chicago, was IU's highest-ever draft pick.

If Effross chooses to return to Indiana, he will enter the 2016 season as a senior.

RHP RYAN HALSTEAD | San Francisco Giants | Round: 21, Pick: 636
Indiana's all-time leader in appearances (105) and saves (33), Halstead was chosen in the 21st round by the San Francisco Giants (636th overall).

Yeah, this is naive, I know, but it boggles my mind that MLB scouts have the skinny on over ONE THOUSAND DRAFTEES from high school on up. Kinda makes the NBA scouts' efforts look like Hobby Jobs.
