SEZ project/renovation thread...

Welcome to the Lee Corso-era Memorial Stadium! The look would be complete if he pulled up the field and put down some of that plastic grass-looking rug they sell at Home Depot and Menards.

Thx. Still would like to know if they sold it or kept it. It was among the better boards in the BIG as it was. Doesn't PU need one? Theirs is circa 1990.
It's in storage. They're still figuring out what to do with it. The assistant AD that posts the pics mentioned that recently.

Purdue installed theirs like 10 years ago I think.

Has to be older than that or the bought it used. Terrible.

Don't store it too long, it only gets less state of the art. Like you said earlier, putting it at the Bart would be solid.

Their website says 2007. Yeah, it's not good.

While they're working on things..., any chance you could get them to properly line up the left side of the state outline with the 45 yard line.

I was amazed they never fixed it prior to all those televised games last year.

You'd think something like that kind of error would be covered under our field installation contract.

Please tell me Fred will get that fixed before our nationally televised home opener...

We will be getting a new video board at the opposite end zone once that project starts. My guess is it'll be in the next 5 years.

Really? The one you currently have is already 10 years old. They seriously aren't replacing that, like, now?

Not sure exactly when the renovations will start. Our football performance complex will open in August and I'm guessing they'll announce stadium renovations soon after. Hopefully it's sooner than 5 years away.

That would require tearing out the current version of the state and completely repainting it, making it longer as well as wider to maintain the proper proportion of length to width. Otherwise, it would look like we just grabbed a bit of Ohio and made it Indiana.

In my opinion, we did enough of that with Kensucky and the Ohio River. Although, admittedly, as I recall, we won that one. :)

:)

Naw, no need to make any land grabs.

It's been aligned properly in the past. No reason they couldn't get it right once again.

Fred's a lawyer. He ought to be able to enforce a contract.

Unless University employees screwed it up we ought to be able to have the contractors fix their error.

It actually depends on the map projection. The east and west borders of Indiana technically are not parallel, and are not perpendicular to the northern border, all of which conform to longitude and latitude alignments. They probably used an the projection optimized for the entire US (Albers) as the template and aligned the northern border parallel to the sidelines. Perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing, but is not an error and probably the most geographically "correct" representation. Past logos probably used the Mercator projection

I'd suggest returning to the Mercator projection. Aesthetically pleasing is what we are looking for in this case.

Well done explanation however t333. Thanks!

People don't realize that the state actually leans a bit to the west...I won't say left unless we are talking about Btown itself lol. Lake Michigan on a map sort of skews the view so if you cover LM with your thumb it is easier to see. Mercator....admit I had to look that one up.

I actually had to look it up too ;). I only remembered that it existed, but did not recall the specific name itself

I've never understood why you carve out Lake Michigan. The Lake Michigan shoreline is not the state border. The state border is within Lake Michigan.

They actually didn't carve out the lake when we put in the turf the first time like 15 years ago, but people freaked out and IU "corrected" it.

There's nothing to correct. It's going to stay as is.

I doubt you'd see depictions of any other Great Lake states with the lake borders used, rather than the shoreline.

I agree. That's how I always recognize Indiana, just thought it was funny at the time.

To be honest, I hope so too. You guys deserve more investment in the program. They've been talking about the RossAde project for years.

maybe they're going for more the "measure twice, cut once" route.

seems like we've been in a constant upgrading of video and sound systems, which each generation having a limited life span due to the next upgrade.

that said, the original scoreboard at MS stood for decades, had no video board, and i never had a problem with it. (probably liked it better than the last one).

on another side note, maybe they'll store the just removed scoreboard at the golf course, since they opened up that space when they removed the basketball goals. (btw, where are those goals now?).

i guess i'm more interested in the on field action with the marching band in the interludes, than the 3 ring circus approach.

if IU wanted to limit the video board to replays, i might be more on board. but we all know that ain't gonna happen, and all the video/audio is more about ramming commercials down our throats than anything else.

that said, how much did IU make from in venue advertising last yr, broken down for both MS and SSAH.

A. They aren't getting rid of the video board. Too much ad revenue and people want replays. It would also look cheap to recruits to have a 40 year old scoreboard out there.

B. The previous scoreboard is in storage, not on the golf course.

C. As for the old basketball goals, they've been refurbished, along with part of the old floor and scoreboard, and are in the north/South lobbies of Assembly Hall...

Except the Ellis Park horse track is on the Indiana side of the Ohio. Seems the river changed course and left a part of Kentucky on our side of the river. I have always said we need to claim it is our property and screw Kentucky.

When our riverboat casino used to actually sail down the Ohio, It had to back downriver because there wan't enough room to turn around without crossing into Kentucky. Kentucky being pissed there was a competitor to Ellis Park, threatened early on to arrest the people on the boat if it strayed into Kentucky waters. Another reason to hate Kentucky.

This just might be a rumor that I heard while drinking at the Crazy Horse, here in B-town, but I am pretty sure someone mentioned that the old scoreboard from the SEZ was going to be put in the outfield at our new and wonderful baseball stadium. I would love to see replays, while enjoying my Hoosiers stomp B1G competition. Now if they would just sell beer there!

Maybe post a new thread asking about to where the SEZ Board will be moved.

I thought I'd seen something of that nature posted here, but don't hold me to it.

Aerial shot from instagram. That little parking lot and grassy area behind the SEZ will all be dug up out to the road and will be regraded as a larger grassy area/plaza.

That was just a hopeful possibility from me and another poster. The board is in storage and they're still deciding how to use it.

Cool shot. Thanks for the pictures and updates. I plan to take a day off and get to B'town in the next couple of weeks to check it out for myself. I usually take a day this time of year to come down and hand-deliver my season ticket renewal. Still waiting for the packet in the mail.

Mostly, it's an excuse to take a day off work and come down with my daughter (also an IUB alum) to spend a day browsing campus, hitting the bookstore and varsity shop, and grabbing lunch at Nick's, Mother Bears or Buffalouies.
