IU scored their first run in the 2nd after a lead-off triple by Cangelosi eventually allowed him to score. IU got two more runs in the 3rd playing small ball by stringing singles together, with the key hit being a two-out single by Cangelosi that scored both runs.

The Wildcats got a run in the 5th after Schieber hit a lead-off triple and then scored on a fielder's choice. They also got a double in the inning, but the runner was stranded. BTW, Evan Bell is on the mound for IU.

Bell ran into some trouble in the 6th giving up a lead-off single and then a walk. A huge defensive play helped prevent any damage in this inning when the Wildcat runner on 2nd tried to steal 3rd but was thrown out by Fineman for the first out. Bell walked the next batter and was replaced by Belcher who pitched IU out of the jam with runners on 2nd and 1st.

IU picked up two more runs in the 6th. Key was Miller who singled after one out and then stole both 2nd and 3rd, eventually scoring on a SAC bunt.

The 7th was a disastrous inning for IU pitchers as they reverted back to their Little League days. I believe the Wildcats brought 8 batters to the plate before IU registered an out. It started with Belcher hitting the first two batters of the inning. Milto, after replacing Belcher, walked a man loading the bases, and then gave up a hit to score a run. He gave up a grand slam to the next batter giving NU the 6-5 lead. Kelzer finished the inning for IU.

IU didn't waste anytime regaining the lead. Hopefully, Kelzer can finish this game out without anymore damage.

Kelzer sat them down in order in the 9th. IU got the sweep, but it was anything but easy. They are on the road next weekend, playing at conference leader Minnesota in what will be a huge series (my keen sense of the obvious.)

Dang, the boys sure enjoy making it interesting. That's gonna start biting them.

3 one-run games against the league's worst pitching. In the 3 game stretch starting with ND, our hitting vanished. We'll need to get over that quickly.

Hoosiers Tame Wildcats, 7-6; Sweep Series

Next Game:

5/6/2016 - 7:30 P.M.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two runs in the bottom of the seventh pushed Indiana Baseball (26-16, 11-4 Big Ten) to a 7-6, series-sweeping victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Evan Bell scattered five hits through 5.1 innings, picking up three strikeouts and allowing one run. Junior Jake Kelzer picked up the win with a three-inning effort where he allowed just one hit.

Juniors Alex Krupa and Austin Cangelosi each provided two hits and an RBI, while freshman Scotty Bradley drove in a pair of runs to lead the team. Freshman Luke Miller and junior Tony Butler also picked up RBIs in the contest.

Indiana looked to be in trouble in the top of the second as the first two Wildcats reached safely. After freshman catcher Ryan Fineman went across the diamond for a 2-6-5 pickoff of the runner at second base, Bell buckled down and forced two outs, leaving two on base. Cangelosi took the first pitch he saw in the bottom half and placed it in the right field corner for a leadoff triple and scored on Miller's groundout to short stop.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Bradley upped the Hoosiers' lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI single to right field, which scored junior Craig Dedelow and sophomore Logan Sowers, who both singled.

A one-out triple in the top half of the fifth turned into Northwestern's first run of the game, trimming its deficit to 3-1. The Wildcats looked to put themselves in good position again in the sixth with two on and one away. Junior Thomas Belcher entered the game and struck out the first batter he saw before a walk loaded the bases. A pop out to senior Brian Wilhite left the bases loaded.

Indiana used two runs in the home half of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Miller singled and stole two bases to move to third with one out. Butler's sacrifice bunt plated Miller and put Indiana back up by three runs. Krupa then scored Wilhite, who walked and bumped up to third base after a wild pitch.

Northwestern used three hits in the top of the seventh to put up five runs and take a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Isaiah Pasteur's sacrifice bunt attempt in the bottom of the seventh resulted in a throwing error on Northwestern's catcher, which loaded the bases for the Hoosiers with no outs. Cangelosi pushed Indiana back ahead with a fielder's choice to the left side. A two-base throwing error resulted in two runs scoring on the play.

From there, Kelzer retired the final six batters he faced to secure the 7-6 victory for the Hoosiers.

Indiana is back in action next weekend as it travels to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers.

Game Notes: In the second inning, Austin Cangelosi recorded his second triple of the season and fifth of his career… With a single in the third inning, Scotty Bradley notched his fourth multi-RBI game of the season, the sixth most on the team… Craig Dedelow's two hits marked the 15th time this season he's had a multi-hit game, a team-high…With one earned run allowed,Evan Bell has now allowed three runs or less in 10 of his 11 starts this season… With 10 hits, this was the Hoosiers 17thdouble-digit game this season…Sunday marked the Hoosiers' 11th one-run win of the season…Indiana is 7-2 on Sundays.

IU baseball sweeps Northwestern to move a half game out of first

by Michael Hughes

Everything was going off the rails.

Or at least that’s what IU Coach Chris Lemonis said happened when IU allowed five runs in the top half of the seventh inning against Northwestern on Sunday.

Then junior relief pitcher Jake Kelzer entered the game and pitched three shutout innings while IU retook the lead to win 7-6 and sweep Northwestern at Bart Kaufman Field.

“We’re like a ‘Rocky’ movie,” Lemonis said. “We just keep getting punched and knocked down and we fight back. It’s kind of been the way we’ve played all year.”

Sunday was Kelzer’s second win of the series after picking up his second win of the year Friday when he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth before IU walked off in the bottom half.

This win was more challenging. Entering the game after the Wildcats hit a go-ahead grand slam, Kelzer walked a batter and allowed a single to the next. What followed was a double play and a strikeout to end the threat. Kelzer didn’t allow a baserunner after that.

“The mentality is throw strikes,” Kelzer said. “Get ahead in the count because watching throughout the two games Friday, I really could tell if you got ahead in the count you had the advantage on the hitter.”

Senior starting pitcher Evan Bell still couldn’t win his first game of the year, even though he exited after 5.1 innings with a 3-1 lead. After the bullpen blew the lead in the seventh inning, his one earned run off five hits and three strikeouts went unrecognized.

But it was the his second straight start the Hoosiers won, after only managing to win once in his first nine appearances.

“We’re winning when he’s pitching right now, which is all that matters,” Lemonis said. “But I’d like to see him get that first win.”

Offensively, the Hoosiers scored runs without getting hits. In the bottom of the seventh, when IU retook the lead for the final time, it scored both of its runs that inning during a play that saw Northwestern’s second baseman’s throw miss the first baseman wide by about 15 feet.

They also scored two runs off RBI groundouts and another off a safety squeeze.

But the Hoosiers still won and swept the Wildcats, moving them a half game out of first place in the Big Ten behind Minnesota.

With their RPI taking a hit from simply playing a Northwestern team with two Big Ten wins all year, Lemonis said IU know it need to play well in the Big Ten to put itself in a position to win the Big Ten Tournament and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

It’s a balance between playing with urgency but also playing loose, Lemonis said. The team talks about needing to win most every game they play but still focus on remembering they are in fact playing a game.

“We talk about playing for the league, and every time we come out here there’s that pressure we put on ourselves because we want to be in that situation to handle that pressure,” Lemonis said. “We know what’s in front of us. They’re not stupid.”

Go Hoosiers!
