1st inning;

T1st: Glasser opened the game with a K and Jessee walked to put a man on. Pyne then K'd and Mathison flied out to the warning track to end IU's half of the 1st.

B1st: Seiler got the first two batters on a GO and a K. A slow roller put a man on with an infield hit. A WP allowed the runner to take 2nd with two outs. Seiler then walked a batter to put men on 1st and 2nd with two outs. What should have been the 3rd out ended up being a throwing error on Glasser which allowed the man on 2nd to score an unearned run with runners on 1st and 2nd. Seiler got the third out on a K. What a way to open the season giving up an unearned run on an error when we should have been out of the inning!

2nd Inning:

T2nd: Tibbetts opened the inning with a single and Ellis clubbed a homer to RF to give IU a 2-1 lead with no outs. Whalen then K's for the first out and Colopy walked to put a man on. Goforth K'd for the 2nd out bringing up the top of the order in Glasser. Glasser singled to LF to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Jessee flied out to end IU's half of the inning.

B2nd: The bottom of the order was up and Seiler K's the first batter. The next batter hit a hard single to LF to put a man on with one out. Seiler then walked a batter on a full count to put runners on 1st and 2nd and one out and the top of the order up. Seiler then got a big K for the 2nd out with men still on 1st and 2nd. Seiler then walked the bases loaded with two outs on his 3rd walk of the game so far. A GO ends the Auburn threat with no damage done, but Seiler is starting to have some control issues.

3rd Inning:

T3rd: Auburn goes to the bullpen to bring in JUCO transfer LHP Tanner Bauman and he puts them down in order to include two Ks.

B3rd: Seiler faces the 4 thru 6 hitters. Seiler walks the leadoff hitter for his fourth BB of the game. Seiler then gets a K on three pitches. A single to RF puts runners on 1st and 2nd, and then a hit past Pyne loaded the bases with one out and Mercer pulls Seiler going to transfer Gabe Levy who came from Davidson. Another hit that got through the infield ties the game at 2-2 with the bases still loaded and one out. The bottom of the order has gotten the last two hits. A force out at 2nd on a ball hit to Glasser, scores the runner from 3rd and Auburn takes the lead at 3-2. A WP scores another run to make it 4-2 with two outs. Another infield hit that was knocked down but a play couldn't be made, puts runners on corners with two outs. A flyout finally ends the inning where pitching issues early on have really hurt IU although it was a case of Auburn finding holes in the infield on a couple of those runs.

4th Inning:

T4th: Ellis leads off and was hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice got Ellis at 2nd with Whalen reaching 1st. A pop up to the catcher gets Colopy for the 2nd out with Whalen on 1st. Goforth Ks to end IU's half of the inning.

B4th: The 3rd thru 5 hitters are up and the leadoff hitter finds a hole through the infield to put a man on. The next batter hit a two-run homer to RF to give Auburn a 6-2 lead. A freshman and a transfer have been doing a lot damage for Auburn in the game so far. A GO and a couple of Ks with a double mixed in end the 4th with no further damage.

5th Inning:

T5th: Glasser singled to RF and Jessee was hit by a pitch (2nd hit batter by Auburn) to put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs. Pyne grounded out to 3rd which moves the runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out and Mathison up. Mathison grounded out to 2b scoring Glasser and Tibbetts reached on an error by 3b scoring Jessee for an unearned run and the score at 6-4 with two outs. Ellis walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and that chases the Auburn pitcher. Auburn brings in RHP John Armstrong to face Whalen and Armstrong had an ERA of 4.25 last season. Whalen K'd for the last out.

B5th: Levy gives up a leadoff single and Pyne commits IU's 2nd error of the game to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Levy got a K for the first out. A double scored a run to make it 7-4 and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A SF scored another run to make it 8-4 and Levy got the final out on a K.

It's been difficult starts for both pitchers in their IU debut as transfers. Fielding didn't help things also. Auburn freshman Ike Irish hitting in the cleanup spot is 3 for 4 so far with a double.

8th Inning:

T8th: Tibbetts walked to leadoff but IU would go down in order after that.

B8th: Vega sandwiched two Ks around two walks to put men on 1st and 2nd with two outs. A pop out ended the inning.

9th Inning:

T9th: After two outs, Jessee was hit by a pitch and Pyne singled to put runners on the corners. Mathison then struck out to end the game.

Disappointing start to season and our potent hitting attack didn't show up except for the two-run homer by Ellis. We were 5 for 33 and a batting average of .152 with Glasser the only multi-hit player going 2 of 5. Auburn got hits all up and down their lineup and their 6 through 9 hitters were 6 of 17 and Auburn was 11 for 36 on the game. Two of our transfer pitchers got off to bad starts to the season and here are their numbers.

Seiler - 2.1 IP, 4 Hs, 3 ERs, 5 Ks, 4 BB, 1 WP

Levy - 2.2 IP, 7 Hs, 2 ERs, 4 Ks, 1 BB, 1 WP, and 3 XBHs

Vega was the bright spot and he took them down in order in both the 6th and 7th innings. He went 3 IP, no runs, 2 Ks, and 2 BB.

IU was charged with two errors which hurt the effort.

I just posted the complete box score from the Auburn site. They didn't have one at the IU site right now.
Disappointing game in many ways. Reminds me of a twist on a saying we had years a ago when we would slop around and score enough to win: It’s not how but how many. Yesterday for me it wasn’t about how many but how. 54 or 55 to go, hope and expect to be better than yesterday.
