“I said to Angela Merkel, ‘Angela, how many Chevrolets are in the middle of Berlin?’ She said none. I said, ‘You’re right about that. But we take your cars, including cars that aren’t that expensive, like Volkswagen, relatively speaking.’ I said, “do you think that’s fair?’ She said, “Probably not, but until you came along, nobody ever mentioned it.”

That’s why he is THE GOAT!!!!!!!

Do we build a product Germans want?

Corvettes, probably. Teslas? maybe.

F-150s? Nope.
Minivans? Nope.

We don't build much else. Ford doesn't even make a damn sedan anymore. I mean, I can see why Euros don't want American cars. They also can't meet Euro pollution regs.

This sounds like Trump being smart but it's just another example of his inch deep thinking.

Trumps Zlzero sum view on trade is mostly incorrect, but once in a while he finds a nugget.

Other countries that flood us with products and services while being protectionist towards ours ain’t fair y’all.
Just a nugget here and there... It's only the biggest got damn elephant in the room that every person in the world knows, but the legacy swamp republican's profit from so they work "dick in condom" (just like hand in glove, but with more respect) with the DNC to cover it up and personally profit from.

Trump simply said,
"hold my porn star... I'ma gonna cause a ruckus with the good old boys and girls, and some retired Navy people simply won't be ok with it" . And the good old boys and girls, were not happily ever after.

You can't buy what's not available. Why wouldn't they want our cars? And what euro wouldn't want an American truck? They sure as hell love our jeans and cowboy hats ;)

Now you want some real euro history with GM and Ford? Don't kill the messenger. From Wapo when they had real reporters. Long read and a wowser all the way to the settlement late 90's.

Cool story, Donny Vonshitzhispantz ..

Sorry but no one sane believes that he or she said any of that.

Good question. Also high cost of manufacturing compared to the US. That's why German manufacturers build here. So what's the solution?

Gas is like $8 US a gallon in Germany and our cars don't meet their regulations. Our jeans and cowboy hats do. How many German jean and cowboy hats companies are selling products in the US. Probably zero. Why?

Also I'm betting Trump never even asked this.

The Middle East on the other hand? Sure.

Euros are going to be buying Chinese EVs and soon. We're going to miss the boat entirely.

Well since the article isn't tilted full lefty I have no doubt you'll believe what you've been trained to believe.

What are you babbling about? I gave legit reasons why Germans aren't buying our cars. And like you pointed out first and I agreed with, they are buying other American made items.

Whats left, right, or center about that?

I think euro emissions are less strict than ours. Not certain but believe so inasmuch as I see SUVs I like but can’t be sold here

All of this auto nonsense is so overblown. The majority of cars made in the U.S. are produced in the U.S. or nearshore (e.g., Mexico). VW has massive manufacturing domestically, just like Mercedes, BMW, etc. Similarly, Ford and GM have offshored and outsourced as much as they can because of labor competitiveness, among others.

We are Germany's 3rd largest trade partner. They are our 4th. They buy $100 billion worth of goods from us. We buy about $170 billion from them. If you went by dollars spent divided by population they are way out spending us.

Our SUVs won't fit on their roads. At least those that aren't highways.

And I don't think i've ever seen a pick up truck anywhere in Europe. Sure, off the beaten path or a farm but not on a regular road.

There isn’t any money in the smaller vehicles. The margins suck. Also, a good majority of Europeans are a lot poorer than Americans. They can’t afford larger vehicles and have less need for them, as well.

China is going to make cheap EVs and flood the market. We have no response.

That's a problem.

They aren't available like I said. That is not a legit reason and everything can be made to fit. ANY Mustang electric or GT, Shelby, or 6 cylinder would be attractive as well as a Camaro or Vette. I have no idea what you're going off and I appreciate your opinion, but one other thing about American cars they aren't as hard to maintain. Some euro cars oil changes are in the hundreds. Its ridiculous. The point is as the dialogue went why not American cars over there.

One of the coolest Fords in Thailand and Southeast Asia is the Everest. Sells pretty good too. I saw some tricked out ones that were super sharp looking. Anyways, unless you have the built in prejudice of the Top Gear guys towards American vehicles to say they wouldn't work or be wanted in foreign countries like Germany is not fair.

We currently manufacture the Ford Everest over in Thailand. The only reason I know this is because I saw one modded out and was wondering where in the hell to get one. Can't get one here.

china's labor costs (relative to ours) make their margins a quarter.

We can't match it. We're, as they say, fooked.

Ummmm Yea I could do that.

Well, the UK is mostly out b/c of right hand drive. Kinda kills most of SE Asia as well. Australia has Fords (sidenote, Ford is really the only Big 3 manufacturer that tries to have a global presence) and they do pretty well. I see them in Africa as well (a lot of right hadn drive there too).

That leaves continental Europe. Sure, they probably screw us but there isn't a ton of demand for larger trucks and SUVs over there. Narrower roads, higher fuels costs, etc. Also, they don't commute like we do. American car culture is a thing and the Big 3 do a good job of competing with Japan here in the US. But overseas, not so much. South America makes more sense (left hand drive mostly and a lot of area to cover).

It is.

In Africa they still love diesel. (Diesel fuel is cheaper than gas in most places I've been).

I do love a nice Toyota Hilux. Sweeter than the Tacoma if you ask me. And, a real off road vehicle.

Is that you?
