I think someone posted an article on the board about Republicans holding up the Zika research bill but according to this that's not true. According to the article it's the Democrats that are holding it up because "it doesn’t contain an earmark specifically granting extra funding to Planned Parenthood".

That's a load of shit. It had nothing to do with earmarks. House GOP specifically rewrote the language to exclude planned parenthood, as republicans have gleefully admitted publicly. NR is flat out lying.

Their are no lies in that article. The Democrats want more funding for PP and the GOP doesn't believe they should get more so they've advanced the bill without additional funding. The Democrats repeatedly characterize the bill as an attack on PP and even defunding PP. That's a lie - they leave it funded as it's already funded. Democrats are holding up the bill to advance the bogus "war on women" meme.

Goat just because PP doesn't get new funding doesn't mean they are excluded. It just means they don't get any additional funding so there is no lies in that article.

The NYT's coverage is fair and it is the same as the coverage on POTUS that I've heard. The truth is Democrats want to use this issue to increase funding for PP and the GOP doesn't want to do that. National Review concurs with those facts. The CDC would get Zika funding if the bill were passed and signed. Could have done this two months ago.

It's also bogus that every bill needs to have 60 votes to pass in the Senate. Both sides of the aisle are full of crap on that.

The funding restriction for PP came from the Senate, added by Republicans. The House Bill contained no such provision. The Republicans also added a confederate flag provision, and an attempt to deregulate pesticides. Those were in the bill originally defeated but eventually stripped from the bill. So there was gamesmanship going on.

At current the bill prevents PP from getting any of the money in Puerto Rico, but other clinics are eligible to receive the bill. This seems an attempt to marginalize PP. Link

That said, at this point the GOP has been playing games with Zika and the Democrats in my mind were stupid enough to join them. The house is on fire, now isn't the time the sit in the kitchen debating who should get the money to repair the damage. Now is the time to put out the fire. The Democrats should accept the loss and fight it out in the election. Rather the Dems are prioritizing PP over Zika. So yes, a curse on the GOP for playing these games and a curse (much smaller) on the Dems for joining in.

We have a potential public health crisis looming. I am not downplaying PP, it is just compared to what Zika might become PP isn't worth it. Especially since it doesn't cut any current funding from PP. If it did, this might be a debate worth having. But it isn't. Just because the GOP has gone bat crap crazy doesn't mean the Democratic Party needs to start down that same road.

Seriously, a confederate flag amendment in the Zika bill. The pesticide amendment, the PP Amendment. What was wrong with passing a simple bill?

Is the NYT article a "load of shit" also? It certainly appears that the Dems are wanting "additional" funding for PP. Is that not what you are reading in the NYT?

I always get a chuckle when the left thinks they GOP is the villain when they block something the Democrats want but the Democrats are not the villain when they block something the GOP wants.

Don't we all want Zika funding?

A lot of bullshit being thrown around here.

The Zika / PP thing comes down to 2 clinics in Puerto Rico that are affiliated with PP. The current Zika bill specifically bans those 2 clinics from receiving any Zika funding. That's the extent of it.

It certainly has nothing to do with an earmark. It's political games in an election year.

That's incorrect.

Democrats have accused Republicans of inserting language targeting Planned Parenthood into the Zika funding legislation to bait them into blocking it. The measure would primarily withhold funding from two Planned Parenthood clinics in Puerto Rico that do not offer screening for the virus, but to Democrats, any limitation on Planned Parenthood sets a dangerous precedent that Republicans could exploit.

The measure is so vague that after multiple votes on the legislation, few from either party seem to clearly understand what the provision — which does not mention Planned Parenthood by name but places limitations almost exclusively on those two clinics — would do. Yet, in a demonstration of just how politicized Planned Parenthood has become, both sides have shown they are willing to wage war over it.
