Xavier @ IU: Errors costly as IU drops home opener, 8-4...

IU tries to make amends for an extra inning loss to X in Arizona earlier. RHP Jackson Yarberry with start the game for IU with Schyuler behind the plate. The batting order is Brenczewski (DH). Taylor, Dickerson, Wiggins, Hanley, Oliver, Pyne, Malamazian at SS, and Schyuler. Xavier will counter with RHP Ben Weber on the mound.

It's 63 degrees with some light rain in the area with the wind SW 6 mph and gusts to 15 mph.

T1st:

Yarberry got the leadoff hitter on a K and the gave up a homer to LF as Xavier got a quick lead. Another K got the 2nd out. He then gave up a walk on a full count with two outs.

A two-out, two run homer gave Xavier an early 3-0 lead. A K finally retired the side with the two homers putting a damper on things. Hopefully, IU is hitting the ball early today.

B1st:

Brenczewski Kd to lead off. Taylor grounded out and then the hot hitting Dickerson singled to put a man on with two outs.

Wiggins walked on a full count to put runners at 1st and 2nd and two outs. It was Wiggins' 12th BB on the season.

Hanley doubled to left center to score Dickerson, and Wiggins took 3rd with two outs and two on.

Oliver walked on a full count to load the bases with two outs. Pyne flied out to the SS to end the inning.

T2nd:

Yarberry faced the bottom of the order and immediately gave up a lead off double. He then Kd the next batter for one out.

On an attempted steal, Schuyler threw out the runner at 3B. A flyout retired the side and the leadoff double went for naught.

B2nd:

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up with Malmazian leading off. Both Malmazian and Schuyler singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd and the top of the order up.

T3rd:

RHP Seth Benes replaced Yarberry and he got a lineout, 3-1 walk, K, and groundout to retire the side.

B3rd:

It was the 3 thru 5 hitters up with Dickerson leading off. Dickerson grounded out, Wiggins singled, Hanley grounded out with Wiggins taking 2nd. Oliver grounded out to end the inning.

T4th:

LHP Ryan Rushing replaced Benes and he faced the 5 thru 7 hitters. Things did not get off to a good start as he hit the lead off batter on a full count. An infield single put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

A K got the first out. A passed ball sent the runner on 2nd to 3rd. A flyout to 3B got the 2nd out, and a flyout retired the side as Rushing pitched out of a jam.

B4th:

Xavier wants this game and it appears not to be a bullpen day for them. They brought in LH Ahton Chronister who in 5.0 IP has a 0.00 ERA and has given up just 3 hits so far. He faced the bottom of the order and Pyne line out to LF and Malamazian singled to put a runner on with one out.

Malamazian was caught stealing and Schuyler and Kd to end the inning.

T5th:

LHP Anthony Gubitosi replaced Rushing and he faced the top of the order and he hit the lead off batter. A pop up got the first out. An error on Malamazian at SS put runners on the corners with one out.

A FC got the runner at 2nd for two outs with an unearned run scoring. A WP moved the runner to 2nd but a K retired the side.

B5th:

It was the top of the order up and Brenczewski walked to lead off.

Taylor clubbed a two-run homer to LF to make it 4-3, Xavier.

Dickerson homered to CF to tie the game and Xavier went to the bullpen.

Wiggins grounded out and Hanley doubled to put a runner in scoring position with one out.

Oliver singled to put runners on the corners with one out.

Pyne, who has struggled at the plate this season, hit into a DP as IU missed out on getting the leading run in.

T6th:

RHP Aidan Decker-Petty replaced Gubitosi and he faced the 6 thru 8 hitters.

The leadoff hitter reached on an error at 2B and the errors are hurting us again. A K on a WP moved the runner to 2nd and one out.

A single scored the runner from 2nd which was an unearned run and Xavier has two runs so far that are unearned.

A four-pitch walk put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out.

D-P then hit a batter to load the bases with one out.

D-P has not been effective in his start to the season and LHP Grant Holderfield came in to try and put the fire out in the inning and he faced the No. 2 hitter. Of course, the error to lead off the inning did not help him out any.

A SAC fly scored the runner at 3rd which is the 3rd unearned run of the game for the Muskateers and it was 6-4 Xavier with two outs and a groundout retired the side.

B6th:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up for IU with Malamazian up with X going to the bullpen again. Schuyler grounded out and Brenczewski Kd to end the inning.

Holderfield put them down in order.

B7th:

Taylor singled to lead off. Dickerson lined out to CF for the first out with Taylor holding at 1st. Xavier goes to the bullpen and brought in a LHP. A passed ball moved Taylor into scoring position with one out.

Wiggins got his 13th BB of the season on four pitches to put runners at 1st and 2nd and one out.

Hanley Kd for the 2nd out and Oliver lined out to end the inning.

Holderfield was back out there to face the bottom of the order. The leadoff hitter doubled to start the inning. A bunt single put runners on the corners with no outs.

A FC got the first out with the runner on 3rd scoring, but a throwing error by Oliver put runners at 2nd and 3rd and one out. It was the 4th unearned by Xavier today.

A SAC fly scored another unearned run to make it 8-4. After a hit batter, a K retired the side.

B8th:

It was the bottom of the order up and they went down in order.

RHP Trey Telfer came in to pitch the 9th and he put them down in order.

B9th:

It was the top of the order up for IU and they went down in order to end the game.

A couple of first inning homers and then some sloppy field play put the icing on the cake to make it an easy win for Xavier. This team continues to be a poor fielding team and it's becoming costly like today. Cerny sat out the game, but his replacement in Malmazian committed one of the errors. Oliver had a bad game with two throwing errors at 2nd as IU committed three errors today and they played a huge part in costing IU this game. Initially, they ruled five unearned runs in the game for Xavier, but they ruled that one of those runs was earned later on.

IU outhit the Musketeers, 11-7, but when you can't hold a team down because of errors, what good is that? The 2 thru 5 hitters were 8 of 19 with Taylor 2 for 5 and a homer, Dickerson 2 for 5 with a homer, Wiggins 1 for 2 and 2 BBs, Hanley 2 for 4 with a couple of doubles, and Oliver 1 for 3.

Yarberry opened the game and had a rough outing in his 2.0 IP, giving up two homers in the first and then a double to open the 2nd.

Benes, Rushing, and Gubitosi all pitched one inning giving up no earned runs. Decker- Petty didn't give up an earned run in his 0.1 inning pitched but he didn't have a good outing, giving up a hit, a BB, a WP, a hit batter, and a K, with 2 unearned runs scoring.

Holderfield gave up an earned run in his 2.2 IP and gave up two hits on a single and a double. He also hit two batters while getting a K. Trey Telfer pitched the 9th and put them down in order while registering one K.
