Worst point loss in ncaa tourney by IU

I'm too tired to look it up, but I'd put my next paycheck on yes, at least in 50 years. There are only two losses like this I can remember, being blown away by UK once and once by MI, both 90's. There was 1 or 2 tourney losses I recall being massively PO'd about, Pepperdine, CU, UCONN around then too, but this is the most embarrassing one

but this is the most embarrassing one
How? We weren’t even favored, nobody expected anything out of this team. They honestly did about as much as they could do for a team in this day and age that can’t shoot the basketball.

Maybe the margin is embarrassing but if it wasn’t this game it would’ve been the next. This team wasn’t winning anything this year, it’s now up to Woodson to improve the talent in the backcourt and on the wings so we can threaten teams from outside. As it stands we are way too one dimensional and easy to guard, any good defensive team was going to have a field day against us.

I think Pepperdine (RMK last game) was around 20 pts. There was a St Johns defeat (99?) that was pretty bad too, but I think this is the largest margin defeat by any IU team in the tourney, ever. UNC (Yogi's last yr) torched us pretty badly too.

Answer is yes.
I don't need to check , and I wasn't going to bring it up.

But the Pepperdine, Cleveland St., Richmond, and Colorado losses were more painful. This team was highly effective at beating teams that were not as good. St. Mary's is clearly a better team.

Syracuse 2013 is up there too. Yes last night was embarrassing due to margin of victory, but St. Mary's is a far superior team to us (clearly).

dissecting worst losses... so IU in '22. Who gives a flip? We ran into a team that was primed and playing it's best and we were gassed (and everything they aren't: disciplined, smart, good shooters...). 20 pt loss, 30 pt loss... still a loss. Tip of the cap and get to work on next year. Now you know how far you have to go.

Potential future recruits?
and you think getting scorched in the tourney is worse than not making it for 6 years to potential future recruits? That's easy enough to sell around: "look Mr recruit: you watched and you see what we need. I took a program that hadn't made the tourney in 6 years, back, but I need shooters, etc... to get us back to where we want to go. I know how to do it because I've been in the NBA for 30 years as a coach and player." UK just got beat as a 2 seed. You think recruits are bailing? Doesn't matter... The Coach, program and facilities are what matter in recruiting.

"We made the tournament for the first time in 6 years. And got blown out by 30 points. Please join our team."

How pathetic. How sad. It's embarrassing how out-of-touch IU fans are. We get what we ****ing deserve.

Like you would not have wanted to pay one more game? Nobody thought we were winning the whole thing or even likely getting past the sweet sixeteen but now people are pretending like oh well we would of lost the next one anyway. It was a big buzzkill honestly to just get blown out and really once we went down 9 the game was over we had zero fight after that. We have not wilted that early in a game all year. So yes it was a pretty big disappointmenty to some of us to not even compete in the second half. I really hope the program can get back to the point was there is considered a down year and we are not making excused for losing a game by over 30 points.

I am beginning to realize alot of people were probably not around during the Bailey years like I was so I guess just making the tourney is considered a huge success no matter how much you lose by. I will just have to learn to except the bar has been lowered alot and until we have some major success people will be just fine with games like yesterday.

Literally didn't post a single thing in the last week and then run to the board the second the season is over.

Par for the course.

Woodson turned the game around by the NBA 2nd team substitution. The single worst aspect of his coaching this year was that no one over the course of a full season was able to convince him of the stupidity of that move.

And yes, i'm aware that in all probability we would have lost anyway. That single move removed all doubt.

I thought the same thing we probably would have still lost but that turned the game around and we never recovered after that. I think if anything we could of been in the game longer at least and I doubt it would have been a 30 point lost. Once St. Marys went on that run we just faded away and were done by half. Not to mention I think Kopp have several bricks on threes when we were up like 21-17. Outscored by 24 at the three point line. You can get with that against a lesser team like Wyoming but not a good team you simply cannot with these games making only 2 three pointers.

Yeah, you can't be completely embarrassed when you're the 12 seed playing a legit 5 seed. All of the other tough losses mentioned in this thread were upsets by lower seeded teams, when IU was clearly the favorite to win.

You clearly don't remember the Cleveland ST game....It forced Knight to go get Keith Smart as we were Slow as hell in that upset.

I'd say looking bad on the national spot light isn't great..
Indiana isnt a sexy destination anymore to begin with.
And I've had major donor alums tell me that ..

you needed major donor alums to tell you that? And what insight do major donor alums have into modern-day bball recruiting?

We've landed a 5* recruit in 5 of the last 6 classes. I don't buy that bullshit for a second.
Memphis lands five stars every year and has not exactly lit the world on fire. It can be done tough I think we woudl all agree Lander is likely a three star in all honesty. But I guess you never know until they set foot on campus.

How a 5* recruits fares once they end up on campus is up to them.

How a 5* views Indiana while still in school is completely different.

5* wouldn't continue to come to IU if it was no longer an attractive place. That's my point.
