After Jan 15th, recruiting becomes a nightmare right through national signing day. If you have kids committed, you are fighting off wolves and goblins to keep them. If you have major targets left, you're fighting tooth and nail to get them. If you have scholarships left you are fighting to fill the class with kids you think legitimately have a chance.
IT'S WHY COACHES COACH AND WE SIT ON THE COMPUTER.
So while waiting patiently for the game on saturday, I've got a little time left to muse once again about my "dream commits" coming down the stretch. Like recruiting, "it's fluid".
With 11 kids "in the fold" I'm going to concentrate on about 9 names. In part because Mr. Weaver thinks they'll sign about 20.
Defense: (4) Jovan Swann, Colin Miller, Amir Watts, Dee Walker
That represents most of what can be IU's next defensive front. Quick, athletic, and a fit for the single gap 3/4. Kurtis Beaman would be a nice fit in the middle of the line if IU misses on either Swann or Watts or he could be a nice addition even if they come. Miller and Walker would give IU some speed and quickness to blitz and play in space they've lacked for... for... for forever.
Offense (4) Dez Fitzpatrick, Paul Ramirez, Mackenzie Nworah, A HS TE or the great grandson of Walter Payton or Jim Brown to run the ball.
I think it's vital to keep recruiting defensively to play this defense. Particularly in the front 7. Given the depth and class breakdown for the ILB position, I don't think it's vital to get one this season. But at Bandit (Miller) and Will (Walker), more athleticism is needed there PDQ. Swann and Watts can make a big impact in the adding quickness to the defensive line. Fitzpatrick would give IU a gazelle at WR in case Patrick sees a lot of time at RB. Ramirez and Nworah would give IU a perfect fit for the next OL. Ramirez at tackle and Norah to fit with the new guys after some maturity.
In any event. Putting this list down beats watching re-runs of MSU and Neb.
Go Hoosier football.
