Why wasn't Tegray drafted? nm

Size and speed - undersized and slow at nfl level

Yes - I looked at several draft publications and the common theme with Tegray was the same in every one of them: slow, bad combine stats.

Every single guru that ranked the LBs going into the draft had Tegray way down the list. In many cases, Tegray was ranked 25-30 nationally in his position class. Every one of these publications had multiple guys from our own conference, despite the fact that Tegray was always near the top of the Big Ten statistical categories, rated ahead of him. There were guys that were Big Ten LBs that you barely heard of during their careers that were rated well up the list from Tegray.
Many of the expert guys even pointed out that Covington had more NFL upside than Tegray.

Reason # 1546 to prefer college football over the NFL, and college basketball over the NBA.

Yes agree and recognize Tegray's short comings. Yet he was an extremely productive player. At times size and speed get a little over rated. I am optimistic that his high character and nose for the football will overcome his limitations and he will land on a NFL roster. . In any case Tegray was out of eligibility and had to move onto the NFL. Not sure why players like Simmie leave early only not to be drafted and forced to go the FA route??? Are they getting bad feedback pertaining to their draft position???

I think S.Cobbs had to have gotten some really bad advice and had also begun to believe the "mock draft" pundits who routinely rated him going in the 2nd round (which was never going to happen). In my opinion, he was always a 5th rounder at best just due to his drops... When he tested poorly at the Combine his fate as a UDFA was sealed.

The good news for him is that he probably has hooked up with a team that is giving him a legitimate shot at making the squad versus just being camp competition...

I hope he learns to watch the ball in, snag it with both hands and secure it..., if he does that and also works to get NFL strong he'll have a long career; if he doesn't it'll be a very short one...(in my opinion).

Tegray doesn’t have the upside that a lot of guys have by measurables, but I think he will be an asset to a team. He understands how to play, and he was getting better every game. He also understands how to stay healthy, which is a great attribute for the NFL. I wish him luck, and proud that he wore Indiana.

Jerome Baker at OSU ran like a high 4.5 I think and has better coverage skills. Scales is good in coverage, but has holes in his game. Being small, running a 4.7 and not having outstanding coverage skills will get you undrafted.

After playing with scales though, this guy will prove people wrong and the Rams are a great situation for him. Some guys aren’t great testers, but he obviously has many traits that will compensate for that. He’s going to make that roster, and eventually start because they just traded their starting LB. he is a wade Phillips type of linebacker. In the end, he will likely end up in a better position 5 years down the road than guys who were drafted ahead of him. Within Phillips defense you don’t have to be a 250 pound thumper. This is an ideal situation for him, and I expect some big things. I wouldn’t be stunned if he starts a few games because the rams have shuffled the LB room a little bit. I watched them pretty extensively last year and their current starting Will Linebacker was a safety who is a better athlete than linebacker. So that gives scales a shot. At a minimum he will play special teams.

For what it’s worth here is blurb on Scales & Rams from SB Nation:

“He’s the likeliest of the UDFA group to compete at his position beyond just special teams contributions.”

I bet he makes team. He’s got moxie.
I agree. I think he's at minimum a practice squad guy if he stays healthy. The Rams offered him a pretty decent bonus I'm told and they outbid some teams that really wanted him.

He’s a classic special teams guy, at the very least, and that should help him immensely. He’s also been pretty durable, which will greatly work in his favor.

The NFL guys would know better than me, but some guys will show well at a combine, but it might not translate to the field.

I ran track and played football. In sprints after practice, I was consistently the fastest. I know my fellow sprinters were trying to beat me as we competed against each other during track season. I could hear them trying to catch up, but I could always stay ahead of them. In track season, these same guys would beat me often. I always assumed I was not really as fast on the track, but my speed didn't fall off as much when we put on the cleats and all the equipment.

Scales will have to show the Rams he can get the job done on the field in spite of what the stopwatch says.
