Had a conversation with a friend within the IU Athletics department. It sounds like they and others are very frustrated with our hilljack lunatic fan base scaring off potential coaching hires. It's a circus atmosphere that doesn't appeal to big name coaches.

Just take the Matta situation as one example. One of two things is true:

1) The rumors about Matta's health and potential hiring are true and it's an awkward and undesirable leak for Matta, or;

2) The rumors about Matta's health and potential hiring aren't true and it's still an awkward and undesirable leak for Matta.

Either way, it's bad and annoying for Matta.

Take the Stevens situation as another example. Certainly if Brad were considering IU, he would want to keep things quiet and come to an amicable and classy end to his Celtics career. Brad is just that kind of guy. Lunatic IU fans stop all that, even if it were going to happen. Constant rumor mongering on twitter, media questions, etc make even the association with the IU coaching job to be a toxic public relations mess.

Let that sink in. The IU fans are such lunatics that even being wrongfully associated with the IU coaching vacancy is a headache with weird and strangely personal rumors flying around.

What coach in their right mind would even want to be associated with the job and subject to our lunatic fans' rumor mongering? What coach in their right mind would come to IU?

Any leader worth their salt will focus on what they can control. IU's athletic leaders cannot control what fans do. This is basic leadership stuff. If this is true, then they have already failed.

Other programs have lunatic fans. Just look at UK. I think they have done pretty well in recent decades, while IU has floundered, probably because of navel gazing like this.

Yep....we would be much better off with the Kentucky fan base.

IU fans are no worse than other fan bases around. I thought I was a fanatic until I moved to Georgia and met SEC fans.

I don’t see how the Matta situation is the fans’ fault. Either IU let something slip or a sports reporter got it wrong.

As for Stevens, the dude got doxxed by Celtics fans. If he decided not to come to IU because of fan forums, he’s weak.

The IU athletics department has been a joke for over a decade. Maybe their poor performance in the two sports that really matter is the reason why IU isn’t a prime coaching destination?

But sure, blame the fans.

It's possible that none of our candidates can pass Dolson's "physical", we might need to look in a whole different direction :)

You give fans and rumors to much credit. When other fan bases have people sending hate messages to athletes after they lose. IF a coach is worried about all that they will never succeed at any major job such as UK, Duke, UNC, KU, UL, UCLA, Or IU.

Why would anyone want to coach at Kentucky then? Lexington would have burned down years ago if Kentucky basketball produced the same results as IU. Do you think Celtics fans are any better either?

Yeah, and everybody knows Boston sports fans never talk about the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. . . And nobody wants to coach there.

Pretty sure I'm not a lunatic but am an IU fan. This is a dumb post. Every school has its share of stupid fans.

The administration has no one to blame but themselves. Should've hired Pitino or Alford in 2001 but instead caved to political pressure. Should've hired Cal when he wanted the job but didn't. Should've hired Beilein over Sampson but instead caved to political pressure. Should've fired Crean and hired Stevens but didn't. Should've hired Mack, Holtmann, or Beard over Archie. They've been the most incompetent administration in college sports for over 20 years and it's not even close. They have no one to blame but themselves.

This sounds like an Athletic Department feeling the pressure of a fan base that pays its salaries becoming furious or apathetic with the state of the flagship program looking for an excuse to blame someone else. Our fans are passionate AF and there's maybe 3 other programs that can match that. You think our fans have lost their minds? Well, who fired Bob Knight, kept Davis a year too long, created the Sampson mess, held on and held on too long with Crean? It wasn't the fans who sold out Assembly Hall every game during 6-25 with Crean when we all showed up knowing what we were going to see.

Any AD staff that feel that way can quit. They're clearly not able to understand their flagship product and customers and they're looking for an excuse for failure. GTFO here with that nonsense.

If that's actually the sentiment in the IU Athletic Department, then that's pathetic. Blaming a passionate, involved fan base for their difficult personnel situation would be weak as fuuck.

What does a report (true, false, or half-true) about Matta, a job offer, and a physical have to do with fans? Not a single IU fan had anything to do with that.

In fact, it’s something that could’ve happened anywhere.

Tell your friend to put on his big boy pants if he’s going to work at a major college athletic department. That...and to stop biting the hand that feeds him.

C'mon, so a guy in the AD wants to point the finger at fans, rather than own their own possible missteps? Human Nature 101: why accept blame when you can blame others? The solution to that is quite simple: fans don't show up, fewer dollars flow to the U and Athletic Dept and they can afford a lot fewer AD staff. Ask your friend how he likes that option?

Puhlease, the IU fanbase is a strength, and a great one, not a liability. Do you think they could have afforded a $10mill buyout without a caring fanbase (and yes, I recognize it was an individual or two, but without ticket sales and revenue from fans, none of this is possible). And I could buy all that, except for BBN... that's the largest, most rabid and insane fanbase in the world. Do you or your friend think it's just a complete coincidence that the programs with the largest and most rabid fanbases have the largest budgets to play with?

Tell your friend, they've just about "cured" at least 1 fan from being a problem any longer!

Sorry, irrelevant theory. IU fan base is no different than anywhere else, mostly people with too much time giving their 'expert' opinions about varied basketball issues/topics. Every major program in football or basketball has these forums & expert prognosticators telling it how it is! Come to think of it, maybe the coach search should come from the forum pool base said everyone here knows what is best....

Oh sure. Blame the victim(s).

Funny thread.

If the fans are all to blame, why start a thread about how no coaches want to come to IU and then talk about how bad the fans are? Maybe the subject header should read: “coaches please don’t read this”, for IU fans only.

Yeah, well, wait until someone starts a really important and critical thread about helmets and the block "I" versus the interlock IU logo . . .

(Everyone knows the block "I" is the right answer . . . . And POTFB)

Change the coach's name and for the university replace IU with UK, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, etc. and the facts wouldn't change. Yes, the fan base is a bit out of control at times but high level coaches are not living on islands of tranquility (the Isle of Gonzaga not to be mentioned). All high level coaches know that they live in a rarified atmosphere and are constantly being watched and critiqued. The good ones focus on their game plan, roster requirements, and staff.

Yes, a well written and thought out posting. I watched the interview with the former IU players and found it very enlightening that what they remember best about IU basketball was the continuity of the basketball program AND the most amazing comments were that to a man they had as their goal each year, and what Coach Knight emphasized, was winning a Big Ten championship. Only Hillman ever experienced a NC, but Laskowski, Guyton and Haston’s feelings about the program mirrored Hillman’s - win the Big Ten. They were realistic enough to know yiu do not win NC’s very often, but if you do not win the Big Ten your chances of even having a chance to win a NC are minimal.

goal as a Hoosier basketball player was what Coach Knight always stressed

Wah. Most coaches would love the opportunity to coach for us lunatics.

Academia over athletics - it’s part of the administration’s grand plan to control our politically correct image, instituted during the Myles Brand administration. His plan and subsequent implementation demonstrated so much leadership courage, it landed him a more prestigious job.

Yep....we would be much better off with the Kentucky fan base.
I was going to point out that it would be hard to be worse than the UK fanbase. When Calipari was hired social media was relatively new and it wasn't bad for him, but when he leaves we'll see the UK faithful in full psycho mode.
