I always found it amazing that KW struggled when it came to recruiting and retaining QB's. One would have thought his system would have had guys lined up to play in it...

It appears that Tom Allen has the upper hand. Wilson had some really screwy QB situations unfold on his watch. The year Sudfeld got hurt in Iowa City, Wilson had to play Chris Covington at QB!!!

Wilson also had Tre Roberson go down in 2012 up at UMASS. Wilson had some rotten luck with injuries at that position. Who knows how good the 2012 team could've been with Roberson healthy.

I just happened to be painting for an attorney that particular week and he was friends with Ned Pfau. Pfau is perhaps one of the five biggest donors/boosters. Mr. Lanham flew to UMASS for the game on Pfau's private jet. He came back and told me on Monday morning that the season was basically in the crapper because of the injury...of course two years later Sudfeld gets blasted in IC.

It wasn't that wacky because Covington was actually a pretty good high school QB. Unfortunately, though, Covington quickly went down (the same Iowa game) with an ACL injury and was lost for the season.

The problem that year (2014) was that Roberson bolted very late in the offseason, and after his six TD, 154 yard rushing game against Purdue in November 2013 - - arguably the best single game performance by a QB in IU history. Wilson's inability to hold onto Roberson almost certainly cost us a breakthrough during the Wilson era.

We lost Roberson and Coffman in the same offseason. Then Sudfeld and Covington in the same game.

In 6 months it went from a position of strenght to playing a 5th string true freshman Diamont the rest of the season.

Wilson consistently put his QBs in positions where they would be hit. You must protect your QB at all costs. Wilson did not. It was always just a matter of time before they would get hurt.

i think covington would have made a very good qb. same with donavan hale. unfortunately neither one wanted to play that position.

Coffman, I get. The writing was on the wall for him (kind of like Tronti recently) and he knew it was unlikely he was going to see the field. Coffman, understandably, left shortly after the 2013 season ended.

Roberson's departure, though, was unsettling and probably unprecedented (has a QB ever left another program after concluding a season with the best performance at the position in school history?). He left only six weeks before the start of fall camp. I assume it's because he was bluntly told the job was Sudfeld's.

How could anyone reasonably vote for TA? It’s way too early for this. We haven’t seen Dawkins or Penix play a snap. And we’re elevating them over Sudfeld who’s in the NFL? Ummm, ok.

Dawkins has seen plenty of snaps in the Pac. Penix is a legit QB with offers from FSU, Oregon, Tennessee, and Arizona. Who was the last guy we landed like that and when did we ever beat out Florida State for a Florida QB? Not to mention we just might have a package for Mr Indiana Football Reece Taylor.

We have a starter from the Pac 12, (The best QB league in the country IMO) our starter back from last years squad, a 4star QB with legit big time offers, and Mr. Indiana Football who ripped every team he played and crushed most of the MIC. Those are some pretty good options. Did Wilson ever have that?

Sudfeld was very good, but he was the only B1G QB in the QB room. That was the problem. There was no depth at the position, no effective overall strategy for developing the position (Wilson seemed to be trying to mix and match immobile guys who could throw with guys who couldn't throw but could run), and no discernible succession planning. I will never take shots at Zander because he was talented, driven to win, and one of the gutsiest players I've ever seen in an IU uniform, but he simply didn't have the body to play in the Big Ten. With the cupboard pretty bare, Wilson was forced to go the JV route and bring in a guy who, while talented, was often a turnover machine and, for whatever reason, wasn't able to get it done.

The overall QB situation was extremely precarious from 2014 through the end of Wilson's tenure. Finally (first time since Roberson/Sudfeld/Coffman), we have some depth at the position, including the first 4* recruit (Penix) in, I believe, program history.

With all due respect, your posts are becoming increasingly difficult to read. You're either seriously uninformed or your utter contempt for IU is clouding your reasoning and impacting your ability to think clearly.

I agree with you guys. Wilson's trouble with the QB position (described well above by several) cost us during his tenure. Kind of ironic. I thought QB recruiting and development would be a strength.
I also agree that it's too early to call regarding TA, however we are trending up and I'm a Deboard fan so I'm hopeful.
Go Hoosiers!

2 things killed CKW....

Tre Roberson's injury and recruiting Diamont. Diamont just was never a guy with enough to win at this level.

Regarding Sudfield, wasn’t he largely brought in by connections to Littrell (spelling? It’s been awhile since he was here!)

I find it odd many are voting for TA even though several posters slammed our QB play and offense last year.

Not to nitpick but the thread title is different than the survey question. Way too early to tell anything abt. QB development, which CTA will not be all that involved in, but early recruiting at the position has been impressive.

The foursome of Dawkins, Ramsey, Penix and Taylor is a pretty good room, and CTA brought 3 of them in in his first full class, following a losing season. Pretty impressive.

I was wondering who would comment about that. CKW, who had a Heisman Trophy qb at Oklahoma, started with Lynch’s guys and several of them left. CKW had to pull a qb off the practice squad, start another who was just to small and then sign an ex-coaches son who didn’t start in high school. And yes he did develop Sudfeld. CTA, who we are repeatedly reminded is a defensive guy, clearly has put together a very good room but we may not know much about development until next spring. Meanwhile, hopefully, nobody breaks a leg or transfers out for greener pastures. I don’t see how anyone could have reasonably expected more during this off season.

Oh geez.....here we go again with this laughable premise you have that CKW was some kind of quarterback “whisperer.”

For an offensive “guru,” his mismanagement of that position was embarrassing for a guy of his background.

He never had anybody in the pipeline and was always scrambling at the last minute.
