Today, several former Hoosiers are still swinging — and pitching — in the affiliated ranks of professional baseball.
Here’s a look at how former IU players are faring in the pros:
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Sam Travis, Boston Red Sox: Travis has been up and down with the Red Sox this season, batting .310 (9-for-29) across 10 games. Travis has three doubles and one RBI, while striking out eight times during that span.
Josh Phegley, Oakland Athletics: Phegley has appeared in 40 games in the big leagues this season, working primarily as Oakland’s backup catcher. He has a .210 average with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Micah Johnson, Atlanta Braves: A wrist injury suffered midway through spring training has put Johnson on the shelf since March. The Braves transferred him to the 60-day disabled list on May 8.
Alex Dickerson, San Diego Padres: Dickerson has not played this season due to a back injury. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in early April.
TRIPLE-A
Kyle Schwarber, Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs): A disappointing start to the season has landed Schwarber back in Triple-A, a level where he needed merely 17 games to initally prove he was ready for the big leagues in 2015. Schwarber batted .171 in 64 games with the parent club this season, hitting 12 home runs and driving in 28 runs. The move to Des Moines was made to help Schwarber regain confidence and iron out his approach. In his first three games with Iowa, Schwarber is 4-for-14 with a pair of RBIs.
Aaron Slegers, Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota): A fifth-round draft pick of the Twins in 2013, Slegers is getting his first taste of Triple-A this season in Rochester. Slegers has started 14 games, posting a 4.08 ERA, allowing 94 hits in 81 2/3 innings, while striking out 63 and walking 21.
Jake Dunning, Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox): Dunning is back in a Triple-A bullpen after making six appearances, including one start, for Birmingham in the Southern League. With Charlotte, Dunning has a 10.43 ERA in eight games. Allowing nine runs and failing to record an out on June 24 at Durham caused his ERA to jump from 4.26 to 10.43. Dunning has allowed 11 earned runs on 10 hits across his past two innings of work for the Knights.
DOUBLE-A
Ryan Halstead, Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco): Halstead received a promotion to the Eastern League after picking up eight saves and working to a 1.11 ERA in 22 games for San Jose. Although Halstead has a 6.00 ERA in 10 games for Richmond, he’s allowed runs in only two outings. He has been hit around a bit, giving up 13 hits in nine innings at the Double-A level.
Dustin DeMuth, Biloxi Shuckers (Milwaukee Brewers): After splitting last summer between two levels, DeMutch is getting a full-season look at Double-A. He’s batting .257 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs on the season.
Joey DeNato, Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia): After making a one-inning appearance in Triple-A last week, DeNato is back in the Eastern League, where he’s worked to a 1.09 ERA in 18 relief outings. DeNato has worked exclusively from the bullpen since turning professional in 2014, and this season he’s allowed 20 hits in 24 2/3 innings, walking 16 and striking out 22.
Wes Wilson, Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees): Wilson was recently promoted to the Eastern League for the first time in his seven-year career. The catcher has one hit in his first seven at-bats for Trenton. Previously, Wilson appeared in 23 games this season for High-A Tampa, where he collected 11 hits 68 at-bats (.162).
HIGH-A
Scott Effross, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs): Working out of Myrtle Beach’s bullpen this season, Effross saw his ERA jump to 6.21 after allowing three runs during a two-inning outing on June 2. Since then, Effross has yielded only two runs across his last 10 2/3 innings. For the season, Effross has a 4.76 ERA in 24 games, allowing 49 hits in 39 2/3 innings.
LOW-A
Caleb Baragar, Augusta GreenJackets (San Francisco): The left-hander has started all 12 games in which he’s appeared, scattering 64 hits across 62 1/3 innings and working to a 4.04 ERA. Baragar has been on a nice run of late, allowing only two earned runs over his last 21 innings spanning three starts.
Kyle Hart, Greenville Drive (Boston): Since joining Greenville in mid-May, Hart has authored several strong starts for the Drive. The lefty has started eight of the nine games in which he’s appeared, holding opponents to a .241 average and working to a 2.45 ERA. Hart has struck out 40 batters and walked 12 in 44 innings, while scattering 39 hits.
SHORT SEASON A
Jake Kelzer, Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia): The Bloomington South product has appeared in only one game this season, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of relief on June 22.
Christian Morris, Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees): Morris has appeared at three levels this season, coming out of the bullpen for one appearance each for High-A Tampa and Short Season Staten Island, where he’s currently assigned. Otherwise, the bulk of Morris’ work this season has come for the Low-A Charleston RiverDogs. Across all three levels this season, Morris has started 14 games while working to a 1.93 ERA. He’s allowed 20 hits and struck out 21 batters over 28 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .194 average.
ROOKIE BALL
Craig Dedelow, Great Falls Voyagers (Chicago White Sox): Dedelow has hit safely in each of his first nine games of professional ball, collecting 13 hits in his first 39 at-bats (.333). Of those 13 hits, five have been doubles and two have gone for home runs. Dedelow has eight RBIs and an OPS of (.979).
