I mentioned in previous posts that if he doesn't win another game at this point besides the Oaken Bucket he will not be renewed. I still believe that to be the case, especially after the buzz created by starting 4-0; it would be very disappointing to only win 1 more game at this point. There is no reason that Iowa, MD, Rutgers, and Michigan shouldn't all be wins. I expect IU to win 2 of those plus Purdue, which will get IU to 7 wins on the year.
I do think if IU beats OSU you lock Wilson up for another 3-4 years for certain. He will then have a track record of beating teams we have no business beating (Mizzou being the other, and this is just an opinion of mine). IU would then be entering the top 25 for the first time in more years than what their ranking will be.
If IU loses a close game to OSU and beats PSU or Rutgers, I suspect they will lock up Wilson during the bye week.
Raising his pay to a Jerry Kill level of 2.1mm or slightly above that to 2.3mm to Hazell's pay at Purdue would be fair and I would also include signifcant bonuses for certain bowls going forward (if I could structure a contract). He could then reach 3.0mm, similar to Mike Riley at Nebraska based on bowl performance.
If he beats OSU and IU goes on to win 8+ games, it's going to cost IU significantly more than 3MM to keep him. I suspect some of the big boys will come knocking on his door and be able to offer 3.5 - 4mm (even if not warranted). Based on the coaches hot seat site, I'm not sure though which programs you'd actually want to join. It would be funny if there was a coaching swap between Texas and IU. Wilson is not a big enough name for Texas though.
No matter what happens I'm excited we are off to such a great start and I think this is going to be an exciting rest of the season for Hoosier fans.
