I should modify that. They started the 1988 season 5-0-1, with the tie coming to Missouri, 28-28, in the second game. Before that, I think the only time it was done in modern times was the 1967 Rose Bowl team, which started 8-0. Even the 1945 team that finished 9-0-1 tied its second game.
And in looking back at the 1988 season, we had five home games that year, and every one of them had attendance of 50,000 or better, with two of them 52,000-plus, which was pretty much the capacity of Memorial Stadium then.

I was there and AT, Van Waiters, Dave Schnell and Ernie Jones made for a pretty good team. MSU sort of took the luster off that start though.

I remember those teams from the 1980s and thought they were decent, not in position to challenge for a national title or anything, but good, solid, competitive teams. But in looking back at who they beat and the schedules they played, it really was the golden era of IU football.
