Now that the roster is finalized, but the schedule is only partially known, what must IU accomplish in order for you to view it as a marginal success and resounding success? Last season, I thought we would be a Top 25 Team...and then we finished 9-11 in the B1G, with seven of those B1G wins coming against the bottom of the B1G. Even so, we won a couple games we shouldn't have in the B1G Tournament and made it to the NCAA Tournament and won a game, so most would label it a success. Marginal, not resounding.

For next season...

Marginal Success: Top 4 of the B1G & Sweet 16

Resounding Success: B1G Champion & Elite 8

I’d say, Top 4 in B1G, Semi in B1G tourney and Rd of 32, Then Top 2 B1G, Final in B1G and E8. Better than that is greater than resounding ;)

Marginal (not as good as we hoped for) - Top 25, Top 4 in B1G, Round of 32
Resounding Success (better than hoped for) - Top 2 B1G, Top 10, Elite 8
Hoped for - Top 3 B1G, Sweet 16

NCAA is a crapshoot for nearly every program. I think NCAA expectations should be looked at in longer terms. Meaning, if Woody goes the next 5 years without making the 2nd weekend, that's probably a "failure". But if he loses in the round of 32 this year, not necessarily.

Regular season though...that's where I judge seasons. So...

Marginal success for me = 4-6 finish in B10.
Resounding success for me = 1-3 finish in B10.

I honestly don't think we fixed enough of our weaknesses, roster wise, for anyone to expect a B10 title, or final four. And if all our top rotation guys being back, means we play the same style offense, I think our ceiling is limited anyways. But we do return some really good players. And most programs lost a lot players. So we should improve a fair bit versus last year.

On paper, anything less than 2nd weekend would disappoint me.
I'll be disappointed too. I was disappointed this year when we lost to a team we could have beaten.

Big scheme though, losing early in the NCAA's isn't one of my top measuring sticks for how a program is doing. Wisconsin and Purdue are two examples of programs that are doing just fine, that rarely make the 2nd weekend. I don't want to be either of those programs, don't get me wrong, I just think contending for B10 titles is a better metric, because it implies you have a team good enough to make an NCAA run.

Now...if Woody ends up like Painter, and we haven't had a Final Four 8 or so years from now...then you start wondering about whether he has them playing well at the right time, can win the big ones, etc...

No doubt with the 2nd Woodson production the D will be even better. Success to me in very generic terms, if the defense improves by 3 inches so must the offense and rebounding. Combined that would be a successful season

Improving defensive rankings from last year
No more epic comebacks by opponents.
Improved offensive efficiency
Better than average FT shooting

Doing these things should result in
Winning Road Record.
Bye in the big ten tournament.
Who knows after that.

Top two in the big ten and sweet sixeteen minimum.
Before last season, I said: beat PU at least once, win at least 1 game in BTT and make the NCAA. By that measure, last season was a success, even though to end the season, it still felt like we could have done more, and sucked to go at as we did vs St Marys. But, I figured you had to give CMW some leniency in his first season as a college coach and we hit every milestone I'd said. This year, my targets would be along those lines, although I now think I'd add sweeping PU, ranked all year, and win something (BT regular season title or tournament) and at least S16 and maybe not lose to an underdog in the tourney... ie: lose when we should.

I’d be pretty disappointed if we were NCAA seeded worse than a 4.

this team should be a top 3 conference team.

For one, I think CMWs offensive playcalling needs to be better, especially on out of bounds plays! I am also not a fan of having a player stand in the corner on a full possession! Need to keep moving without the ball!!!

The little things need to improve! Would like to lead the B10 in Ast/TO ratio, be atleast midpack or top 3 in 3pt%, and with our size, we should be one of the best O/D RB teams in the country! Not to mention greatly improving our pathetic FT shooting! Need to be atleast at 75-80% as a team!

Improve these small factors, and we should be contenders!

Out of bounds plays? The guy standing in the corner? Not sure you noticed a bunch of three point shots came from out of bounds plays. Parker got probably half his looks from side action. TJD got dunks off out of bounds plays too. I didn’t see any problems with his out of bounds plays. The guy standing in the corner is common with modern sets. He’s we’re he’s supposed to be. Usually the 3 is in that spot. It’s supposed to open up that side of the floor for the dunker spot. This isn’t a classic motion offense. You aren’t going to see guys running all over the floor.

Marginal success top 5 big ten round of 32
Resounding success top 2 big ten sweet 16

I think we still have holes but I think we will be better.
1. Our roster got better Malik over Durr, JHS over Parker. Malik and JHS are winners too and that helps.
2. We actually got better on paper defensively.
3. TJD and X found something late with pick and roll that was special.
4. Woody will be better with rotations. He is stubborn but he wants to win.
5. I think we will have an edge to us. Tamar and X have a little dog in them. I think Tamar will be better with competing for his minutes.

Agreed. I thought our inbounds plays were more effective than they'd been since RMK days... One think that always irked me about Crean's coaching days was the inability to get decent looks from under the basket inbounds.

Those double screens worked getting Parker open. Some of those looks went away after teams scouted us but Woody put small wrinkles in that got him a few more. TJD got some thunderous dunks from under the basket.

Waaaaay to early..
A torn ACL .Or a visit to any security building.
Could change any rose colored glasses prediction..

I want to overachieve.

And I don't even know what that means anymore.

I feel like a Sweet 16 is in our grasp.

I feel like a resounding success looks like a B1G championship and Elite 8.

This feels fair...but what does overachievement look like?

I graduated from IU in 1976 and the Hoosiers lost less games between 1972 and 1976 than they do in a season lots of times. Thus, I have high expectations.

Personally, I want a Big Ten championship and an NCAA championship next season. It has been over 35 years since we last won the NCAA championship.

I expect woody to better prepared this year now that he has a college of coaching under his belt. Felt like he tried things that worked in the pros but not at the college level due to lack of depth and talent (mass substitutions, pick and role, defending the pick and role)

The interview you posted was an eye opener. I think he's gonna kick some guy's asses if they aren't singularly focused this year.

True, demanding that teammates get kicked off the team after their first drug offense was quite a surprise. Looks like we will have a lot of senior leadership this year. I like how TJD is setting the tone for the freshman class.
