What makes IU's defense so formidable...

IU doesn't have much size inside. Here are the things they do to overcome their lack of size:

-They sometimes front, sometimes play behind and sometimes play 3/4 in the post all with absolutely no ball pressure on the passer and almost always with no helpside defense.

-They sometimes double, but not often, and when they do they are almost never in proper helpside position and have terrible rotations coming out of the double team.

IU isn't very good at keeping their man in from of them on an individual basis, but here is how they overcome that:

-They, once again, have awful helpside defense and are terrible at rotations back to other players.

-They take horrible angles when closing out on shooters and often do so standing straight up, allowing their guy a straight line drive to the hoop.

Their zone defense is similarly formidable. Here are the reasons why...

-They don't have active hands in the zone

-Their communication sucks in the zone (and man for that matter)

-They don't block out well after a shot does go up

-Much like their man to man defense there doesn't seem to be anything they are trying to accomplish in the zone...
-they still allow straight line drives in the zone
-they still allow the ball inside
-they still allow open shots from the perimeter
-they still make horrible closeouts to shooters
-there is still no pressure on the passers
-etc., etc., etc.

Crean is absolutely right when he says they allowed Wisconsin to be to "comfortable". Wisconsin got whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it, no matter what "formidable" defense IU chose to play. I think they allow nearly every team they play to play comfortably on offense, and I know the reason. Crean is one of the worst defensive coaches I have ever observed. His teams are nearly always terrible defensively. By the end of the game, even bad shooting teams are knocking down long 3's, because they are so comfortable and confident from all the successes they have had earlier in the game making uncontested layups and easy putbacks.

I enjoy watching his teams play on offense, but watching his teams play defense is beyond painful. I don't think Crean has a clue when it comes to coaching solid defense, so it will never change as long as he is at IU, imo.
