Well this sucks.

should be technical foul on The OSU and fine for injuring a player

And B1G should fine The OSU for injuring an opposing team's player!

if something gets thrown on the court and it injures a player

Cheerleaders can't leave somedthine on or on the edge of the out that could injure a player.

It was an accident

Unfortunately it happened to our player. What if it had happened to an OSU player?

Cheerleaders are insignificant and its entirely unnecessary to have them crowding the court along the baseline during games. Cheerleading was invented to give girls some way to participate back when only boys played basketball. If you went to a game with no cheerleaders present, what loss would it be?

IU cheerleading

Has won three of the last four national championships and finished second this year.

They are not insignificant.

Competitive cheerleading

is something completely different than what they do at basketball games however

Well that changes everything.

After looking at the game tape, seems that backing everyone off the baseline a few more feet would be a really good idea. Apparently the rule is a poorly to non-enforced five feet of clearance given the fact that there is about four feet of space (or less) between the endline and the bodies cluttering it..

You criticize the cheerleaders.....

However our own Assembly Hall doesn't allow for any room on the sideline with the scorers table and team benches. NONE. Coaches are basically walking on the floor because there is no room for them out of bounds. So really, the cheerleaders are doing a better job than the teams. It's pitiful the limited amount of space there is on our sideline.

saw what happen to Paul George

where the basket extension was to close to the court and you always see players running into camera men all the time and this should be changed.

As for cheerleading you should go to some the competitions and you would actually see how good of an athlete that cheerleaders are. My daughter use to be in cheerleading in junior high and HS and I went to a lot of competitions and some of those girls are amazing athletes and our HS cheerleading squad has won 3 straight 2a championships.

I think they should build pits 3 feet off the court.

Maybe even place some spikes tipped with poo. Would really up the ante of the game. But honestly, this is such a non-issue. There are injuries in sports. We just have to deal with them. It could have been worse, so we should be thankful.

I know they're good athletes, tumblers, dancers, etc

has nothing to do with this issue

Cheerleaders are flat-out amazing - not the point

Crowding the court is the point. And if IU is guilty of this as claimed elsewhere in this thread perhaps IU should lead the way by instituting a ten-foot clearance on the endlines and five feet on the sidelines.

GO IU!

need to remove the cameramen, cheerleaders, from the edge of the court

5ft rule is outdated and not enforced. Need to double the distance to that rule, and referees can enforce it. Paint keep out lines around thr perimeter of the court.

I want cheerleaders not gymnasts, give me a distraction to the opposing tea

I like The Curtain of Distraction at ASU.

Did not criticize the cheerleaders.

Geez. And never said IU was not similarly guilty. Some day after someone gets a paralyzing spinal injury from crashing into someone or something on the endline or into a courtside table the NCAA may lay down some new rules - emphasis on may. Probably not as I just checked some NBA footage and it is basically the same deal except the endline clearance seems to be a full five feet plus between non-players and the court.

Couldn't agree more

Have posted about this before and will continue to advocate for greater clearance around the court.

Assembly Hall has NO sideline space for inbounds plays. Inbounding is part of the game; the player inbounding the ball is playing the game; the space he stands on has to be considered part of the playing surface. He/she should not have to be standing on the toes of bench players or coaches or jostling with spectators (which has also happened). How many times do we have to see players injured diving into the scorer's table to retrieve an errant pass?

Same goes for endlines--a constant stream of injuries, minor and major, to players and non-players who are clustered close to the endlines. Again, this is part of the playing surface; players who are actively engaged in on-court play need to be able to come down safely.

Our coach and opposing coaches commit technical fouls constantly by stepping onto the playing floor--I mean, hundreds of times per game. Why set up the staging so that coaches cannot communicate with players, their assistants, and the scorers table without stepping onto the court?

There is simply no excuse for any basketball arena to be set up in a way that prevents players from playing the game. That shouldn't be so complicated.

Story on Injury and Davis

I wish all the gyms in the Big required a certain amount

of room outside the court so the players and fans could sit away from the play. I watch some games and the fans, coaches and players are almost on the court...reminds me of little high school gyms...
