Perhaps this is part of the Rod Carey effect. It’s a shame plays like this weren’t installed in the offseason when Baz, Cam Camper, and DJ Matthews were healthy.

1. Shivers’s TD run to open the second half looked like a GT Counter, something I don’t remember IU running all year. It was really well executed on that run. You can see Carpenter, Benson, and Sales blocking down and Katic and Haggard pulling and taking their guys out.

2. DW gained 15 yards on a QB keeper that also had jet sweep and RB handoff options. I don’t remember seeing that this season, either.

3. The heavy set with DW under center was new. Katic is terrible at pass blocking, but makes a positive difference as a pulling guard. He was key in springing Shivers on the long TD as well as both the 4th down run and Henderson’s TD run down by the goal line that tied the score.

Speaking of that tying score, on the 3rd down QB keeper play, there was some weird thing going on where Coby tries to cover a bunch of ground to block a LB instead of the CB in front of him and Barner, who is pulling, tries to cover a bunch of ground to block that CB instead of the LB, who ends up tackling DW. If they just block the guys right in front of them, DW walks into the endzone. I’m not sure who drew that one up.

We’re going to need to shorten the game this Saturday and keep Purdue’s O off the field. Hopefully we can use plays like these to run the ball effectively and keep the D fresh.

There are many things IU needs to do to win the Bucket game. I hope they can play like they did against MSU in the second half. PU has a number of things to worry about looking at IU against MSU and OSU while on offense. Our defense needs to tighten up or it could be a long game for IU.

Gotta believe Purdue is going to load the box and force Dexter to beat them throwing the ball. Could lend itself to some 1-on-1 matchups our wideouts need to win in order to be successful

Yeah you’re right on beating man coverage. I think the formations can neutralize that a bit. That first GT counter was run from a 4 WR set. That triple option play also has options for a loaded box.

I wish DW were working with the #1 WRs. The TEs are coming on, though.

Yes sir, I've watched the Shivers run several times from different angles. The blocking was exactly how you draw it up. Shivers doesn't take a misdirection step but instead delays for about a second. It's to the weak side of the formation, into the boundary. It looks designed to go off RT. Unless it was a designed sweep but the Safety who came up overplayed outside contain and made it easy for Haggard to seal him off to the outside. Fun stuff!

Yeah, good eye. It must have been a rude awakening for that poor safety who got smooshed by Haggard.

I watched a bit of the OSU game today. The 2 TE/H-back look that we used in that game and had some success with didn’t appear in the MSU game. There was one play where Carpenter pulled left toward the boundary and went to double team a corner instead of the linebacker who ended up making the tackle on DW. Had he blocked that LB, DW would have had a big play.

Anyway, I’m liking this run blocking and looking forward to more wrinkles against the Boilers.

And therein lies the key. Maintaining an effective running game is so much easier when your OL can move off the ball quickly and get to the Linebacker/ DB level before the running back and create space.

Yeah. On that play against OSU at 10:06 in the second quarter, Carpenter pulled a bit too wide. Had he made a sharper turn upfield, he has a chance to take out the LB and Lucas has a chance at a first down and big yardage if he makes the safety miss. Instead, TFL. The rest of the blockers did a decent job.

One thing I noticed about OSU’s OL is their velocity at the snap. Force = mass x acceleration and they’ve got both elite mass and elite acceleration. On their inside zones they were blocking our LBs before they had any chance of shooting gaps. I think our guys have mass but not quite the twitch of the OSU linemen.

The oline is playing more physical, like way more physical than anything under Hiller. Watch Shivers' long run and you'll see #77 fling their stud LB to the ground like a rag doll.

When I ran that play in HS I had the rule if the end man closed down to seal him off or if he came up field to kick him out. I ran it with slots built like TEs, FB, or guards to keep defenses from reading pullers. Sometimes, with one puller other times with two pullers. The RB would read the block and run accordingly to what the block was. I actually put in the guard staying at half time in the regional because our center couldn't seal the gap against that DT. That DT helped improve our play.
