Assuming Hunter is healthy and there are no more players leave, this is my opening day starting 5.

1. Phinisee
2. Green
3. Durham
4. TJD
5. Davis

As the season progresses and players begin playing more minutes, the starting lineup may not change, but I expect this lineup to be used often.

1. Phinisee
2. Green
3. Hunter
4. Thompson
5. TJD

I left Davis out because I could see Archie giving Davis more time on the bench to save him for late in the season or when we need to match up with more size. I also believe Hunter's length and hopefully shooting ability will be useful in place of Durham. Hunter probably needs to start out cautiously to make sure whatever ails him does not return.

We still have 2 likely spots to fill. A Joey Brunk addition would change the rotation. It is very possible Archie might not start off with 3 guards. We might see a 3 person front court. The combinations are plenty. I like the prospects of Brunk/TJD/Thompson with a backup of Davis/Smith/Hunter available. Any of the backups could be starters. Without Brunk, Davis would do well in the starting lineup. I could see Archie redshirting Forrester. I believe he has a future with IU, it is just too crowded now for him to get enough playing time

With a deep front court, I would like to see us score more in the paint and shoot 3s only on open looks from Archie's inside out preference. I would always take a great shooter. That would make our inside game more productive and prevent defenses from packing the middle. I am cautiously more optimistic than some. I look forward to what happens in the next few weeks. We could become much better with a couple more additions

That is a very small back court and still lacks shooters 3. I would say that lineup would put us about 8th-11th in the big ten standing and a similair 8-12 record. I still am not seeing any three point shooting except from Green and you cannot win without it these days. You simply have to bring in two impact players this spring or I do not see much difference in next years record.

keys to next year's team being successful...IMHO:

1 Deron healthy and 20 min/game- need 10pt/6 reb from him
2 Devonte being consistent and under control more times that not
3 Rob P- has to start hitting the 3 more consistently
4 Hunter healthy to play? This is a big key for next yr
5 2 grad transfers- a big (Brunk?) and a shooter
6 Trayce having a decent frosh season

All the other pcs (Durham, does Smith stay?, Race, Franklin) fall where they may. There is potential there for 20+ wins and an NCAA birth. Team has to find it's chemistry which it obviously did not this past season.

Potential is there next year for a better season. Several pcs still have to fall into place first.

Biggest thing to add to all of that: LEADERSHIP.

This season was lost because there was not a strong voice in the locker room. Somebody needs to step forward and take charge, hold people accountable. Coaches can only do so much.

Couldn't agree more. It can't be overstated how desperately this IU program needs shooters. I'm torn on how Archie and the staff should handle it. Do they try to bring in one-year grad transfers as an immediate fix, or do they attempt to bring in a 2019 prospect who they could have for multiple years? I suppose it depends on how patient they feel they can be.

The big question is Hunter. First will he play and second will he be as good as some believe he will be. He was a top 50 recruit. You don't miss what you never had, but he could be a big addition if he can play.

I could easily see Archie adding one new recruit, one grad transfer and another transfer that will sit out.

I like the core group of RP, Thompson, TJD, and Hunter as a foundation of our team for the next few years. The ongoing health of Hunter and Thompson is a big concern that could affect our success and Archie's ability to build a winner. I have no issues with his coaching. He can't afford another year of injuries and missing key players.

I thought Green was the most vocal I had seen him in the post season. He may not be my first choice to be an example for people to follow, but he seems to have a good relationship with RP and Davis. That could be a trio that can bring everyone together.

let's hope Smith stays and gets his head screwed on tight. I don't want to see him transfer. I do want to see him play like he cares.

Just realized I didn't mention Anderson. Still think he may leave. He's going to struggle at this level with a low launch angle set shot. And he looked like a deer in headlights on defense. Not much playing time waiting for him next year.

He may have to play some minutes because we lack guard depth but I don’t look for him to be a major contributor

Al is a guy I could see moving into that roll. As a soph who didn't shoot well it was hard to get other to look at you with the respect needed as a leader.

I hope he really works on his game this summer - shooting, defense, all of it. He always seemed to play hard and care about what was going on; don't recall times he wasn't hustling back on D. As a junior he could be important as a steadying force.

I would think Anderson probably leaves instead of spending another year on the bench. I just do not see how he would get much time and his shooting is nothing like we were told it was.

Assuming Hunter is healthy, I think he starts Day 1
A big if. I will not pencil him into any lineup until we are told he is healthy. It seem like alot of people do not realize he could possibly never play again.

Too early to predict. IU will add at least 2 more recruits for next season that could play a major role immdiately if the are a big or a 3pt shooter, they would have immediate playing time as a current roster weakness.

I think Anderson's shooting % could greatly improve if given more playing time. What was Anderson's 3pt % in HS, it was much higher than last season.

Archie has to get the D worked out as much as the offense. Yes, the defense is improved but it has a long way to go for the B1G conference. Getting the size to compete inside would go a long way toward helping. Brunk wouldn't necessarily change the world but he would certainly help.

The offense is one big question mark. What can Hunter do? Can Davis stay on the floor? Will RP, AD, DG and/or DA shoot it at a high rate? Can Race be an option or just a garbage man?

If IU is still playing the 'what if' game when the season starts, that's not a good sign.

I really like your second lineup when we go small but during conference play anyways I don’t know how often we can be that small especially with short guards at the 1 and 2 and a freshman at the 5. If they were taller I’d feel better about that line up. I guess if they were taller though they may not be playing for us or would be in the NBA.

I disagree. Sure it was higher in hs but the level of competition is so much tougher in college. I doubt he was shooting threes in hs with a 6'5 guys hand in his face. From what I saw of him the guy cannot shoot period.

And doesn’t look like a good ball ha doer, passer or athletic

Have to think it is a confidence issue with Anderson. He was getting semi-regular minutes (albeit limited) where he had an apparent green light to shoot. Seems like an issue where he's probably hitting 3s well in practice/scrimmage situations, and coaches were putting him out there periodically to see if you get shake the in-game yips.

2018-19 SEASON STATS
  • PTS
    1.5
  • REB
    1.1
  • AST

    27.9

27.9% shooter and he cannot play defense and is not athletic. The kid is not big ten material period. Sorry but that is just a fact.

I am not worried too much about height. I do want to eventually have someone that takes up space. The hardest person for me to play was someone wide and thick. You couldn't move them and they could jump well enough to prevent you from rebounding over them without fouling.

I have to agree to disagree. I saw Anderson drill 3 deep 3s in a row in HS with multiple players attempting to guard him.
Now Smith, he can not shoot period.

The problem is right now he cannot shoot or play defense. So he is a massive liability on the court.

I can't disagree if he doesn't make shots or improve his defense.
I've seen Freshman Anderson shoot better, for several games, over several years. I saw Sophomore Smith make perimeter 3pt shots one time ever, in his entire career at IU. A complete outlier, sadly.
If Smith can't shoot a perimeter shot, can't make FT, can't finish in tradfic without losing the ball, can't dribble, can't defend consistently, he is not only a massive liability on the court, but the opposing team does not even guard Smith on the perimeter allowing Smith's defensive man to double team in the post and clog the lane to prevent drives. Teams guarded Damezi Anderson which means the scouting reports say Anderson can shoot and make 3s, but they did not guard Smith at all on the perimeter, daring Smith to shoot, which was essentially a turnover. I'd argue Smith was a bigger detriment to the team than Anderson on offense.

bla bla bla Anderson was a freshman that can get better, no idea if he sticks around, but could be a help by JR and Sr year.

From what I understand Hunter is fine. I think this lineup will have some fire power, a lot depends on us staying healthy and hitting shots.

PG Rob / need help at backup
SG Green / Durham / Franklin
SF Hunter / transfer / Anderson
PF TJD / Race/ Smith
C Brunk or DeRon

Agree it’s not known. But I don’t get the sense he only has a 20% chance at playing next year. I viewed it more like 80%+ he will play.

Have you heard otherwise? Is it really 50/50 or less?

I heard the condition is very serious so all I am saying is people really need to be cautious about penciling him in as a starter. We really need to recruit right not like he may not play or we could be left with a big hole to fill.

Anderson can stay but I really do not see him getting many minutes next year. He would probably be the 5th guard at best.

Al is one of those weird guys who the metrics and the eye test don't match up on. He's playing hard. He has some good games. Everyone sees him as a baller, and a kid that just needs to keep working and improving to become good.

The efficiency metrics suggest that he has hardly improved at all since he got here, he isn't good at any particular skill, and that is roughly a Newkirkian plug that wouldn't get minutes on a good team.

It's weird...although I guess he was only a sophomore. If his shot improves by 6% again this off season, he'll be a 42% shooter from 3...that's useful.

Another bad grade for Miller still not at minimum having defense consistent

Ahh the true "5"
Never uunderstoodppl considering height being more important than size .l
Post up players are 95 times out of 100 looking for position, not a jumper

(Or sarcasm?)
I can do that with eyes closed

Are you not a believe in player development?

Not with IU
