My 15-year-old-son, Marcus, has freshman baseball tryouts on Wednesday, February 28th. He's a pretty good player - really good shortstop; decent hitter. He hasn't touched a baseball since the summer as he's been in his school's (Metea Valley in Aurora for those of you who might be familiar) football and basketball camps and then football and basketball season. Basketball just ended Saturday and now he has eight or nine days to get ready for baseball.
Kids who didn't play a winter sport have been training about twice a week, if not more, since November or December so they'll be way ahead. The coaches, as you might imagine, are meatheads whom I don't trust to evaluate in general let alone understand Marcus' position coming in.
What do you guys think the quickest/best ways to get him ready are?
I was thinking around 100 soft-toss and 100 live BP (from me which means 35 MPH from a short distance) to start (his core will be sore, for sure) and then 50 throws from 60 feet and expand out 10 or so feet every couple of days?
It's got to be a crash course so there's only a handful of things we can concentrate on - it's got to be pretty general stuff, right?
