Well Bell is turning out to be exactly what his historical performance suggested he would be. A very average offensive coordinator. He's light years better than Sheridan. He's actually a good play caller and he can generate creative opportunities. But his teams don't execute at a high enough level to succeed. He's not a good enough coach that he can overcome a terrible line coach, like a Kalen Deboer could and he struggles to get receivers open. Allen had to get this hire right, and he didn't. Tim Cramsey who is now at Memphis was the guy I thought Allen should go after and he's putting up 37 points a game. His fifth strong year in a row. You have to make a lot of bad decisions to get where Indiana is and Allen has. You chose Charlton over Mike Tressel, Bell over Kramsey, hire a guy in Wilt who is a good coach, but has never been a coordinator and this is what you get. A team that consistenly comes up just short. It's a shame because Allen does a lot of things right. He recruits, his teams work hard and play hard. But he does not get the coaches right. They are not all terrible hires, they are just not good enough to be able to elevate the program.

I laugh because the announcers were praising IU up tempo offense in the first half. It had Michigan off balance. Bazelak had sometime to find receivers. The screen game was working. They were staying on the field and helping the defense out. Michigan took away the quick game in the second half. Brought extra guys and we could not protect. We started going 3 and out. Defense was on the field too much and lead to our down fall. You can sit and blame Bell all you want but watch and see how many times a Michigan guy comes untouched. Only thing you can try to do is keep extra guys in to protect. Now you rely on fewer guys in the pattern to try to get open. You have a hard time stretching a defense horizontally or vertically or have to have guys win in man coverage.

I was watching one replay and a Michigan lineman just blew past our player and knocked him flat on the ground. You would hope our player could at least delay him for a couple of seconds.

I don't think Bell is magician, but it's hard for any coordinator to have success with our level of blocking. Deboer figured out how to do it so it clearly can be done, but an average to slightly above average coordinator (which is what I think Bell is) is not going to pull it off.

I think that our offensve line play is way worse than it was then. But I guess that is the chicken and egg argument. You have your thought and I have mine. Who is right or wrong who knows?

Deboer also had the rifle arm of Penix to get the ball out fast and on target.
That certainly helps cover up the OL issues.

This....

BUT - I also think the combination of a healthy Penix, Whop, Hendershot, and Fryfogle was better than the current crew we have. Bazelak, Camper, and healthy DJ Matthews is strong, but I don't see the same connection and understanding of the routes, timing, etc that Penix and the boys had.

I agree it's worse. Not sure if Deboer got more out of Hiller or the line just kept getting worse. Deboer did get guys open a lot faster than Bell has been able to. Not sure how he did it, but he had a great knack for confusing defenses and getting guys open. Guess that's why he's a head coach now.

Between a healthy Penix or Baz, Penix is a better QB. He's way more accurate and the ball comes out much quicker.

Deboer had better offensive personnel to work with.

I disagree the WRs were better than the ones now. Bazelak isn't very accurate and I wish they would rotate Tuttle in despite what people think of him. Let see who the better QB is.

We have just as good a WR room as ever.

But with Bell, I'm not sure Tuttle would be any more accurate in this offense.

I'm not sure we do.

Camper is our go to guy and then DJ is a okay #2. Simmons finally started showing out a little bit but outside of those three, we don't really have much.

The 2019 year had Whop, Hale, Westbrook, Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. Our tight end was Hendershot. We had four guys, if you include Hendershot, who had over 40 catches and Hale had over 20.

This year, we've got 2 kids on track to have more then 40 catches.

I concede. All that is true.

I know this is a loaded question but how do you think Deboer would do with this group? Would he even take the job?

If he's coming from Fresno State with the year we just had, I have no idea.

How would he do with this group? No idea. I will say that he had a better QB, he had better offensive weapons, the line was better then what we have now (they had a NFL guy on the line then, we don't know) and he could cover up the line mess with Penix and his quick release and Ramsey with his scrambling ability.

I think Bell has done as good a job as he can with what he has to work with. It's hard to call plays when a qb can't do a simple 3 or 5 step drop before the defensive line is in his face. I'm not sure Deboer could call successful plays when the offensive line is doing that to the qb.
