Looking at 2018, Frey and Bell were both in their first year at FSU under a whole new regime. They missed a bowl game for the first time since 1976, but the decline of that program began under Jimbo, which is why he bolted.
Under Bell, FSU passing was 3rd in the ACC at 270 yards/game but their offensive efficiency was 10th.
Their rushing attack was dead last in the ACC at 2.8 yds/gm, but it would appear that lost yardage as a result of sacks played a role here, because their leading rusher averaged 4.4ypc and their #2 averaged 3.6ypc. They ranked 118th in sacks allowed, giving up over 3 per game.
Greg Frey was fired in February of 2019.
Walt Bell was hired at UMass in Dec 2018.
In 2019, the passing numbers were essentially the same...267 vs. 270. The rushing yardage increased by 1 yard per attempt. The sacks actually got far worse in 2019...4 per game. Passing TDs vs. INT were 20/13 in 2018 and 24/13 in 2019.
No dramatic improvement under Kendall Briles in 2019 compared to Walt Bell in 2018. Personnel matters.
If we had hired Kendall Briles to be our OC, people would be giddy as hell.
