Indiana Suffers Heartbreaker in Regional
Vanderbilt Home Run in Ninth Lifts Commodores to Win.

NASHVILLE -- Indiana swung first and traded punches with Vanderbilt, but the defending national champions delivered the final blow.

IU suffered a 6-4 loss to the Commodores on Saturday evening at Hawkins Field and will play an elimination game vs. Radford on Sunday. The Hoosiers need three consecutive victories to win the Nashville Regional, including two on Sunday.

Indiana tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Dansby Swanson, the 2014 Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series, busted the game-winning 2-run home run in the top of the ninth to keep Vanderbilt in the winner's bracket.

Brad Hartong and Craig Dedelow led the Hoosiers with two hits each, the latter of which also led IU with three runs batted in.

Indiana came out hot, building an early 3-0 lead with scores in the first two innings.

The Hoosiers put up two first-inning runs after loading the bases on a 2-RBI single from Craig Dedelow, who registered his team-best 10th multi-RBI game.

Brian Wilhite's triple in the second inning set up Casey Rodrigue's RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead.

Vanderbilt, however, would not remain quiet, punching right back with four runs to take the lead in the top of the third, working into IU's bullpen.

The Commodores recorded four hits in the frame to take a 4-3 lead before Scott Effross came in to retire the side.

Effross would retire 10 of his first 12 batters faced and 16 of 20 for the game, but the IU bats simultaneously went cold, as Vanderbilt's Philip Pfeifer sat down 11 straight Hoosiers.

Hartong's lead-off single in the bottom of the sixth put an end to that and Dedelow's single three batters later brought in the tying run (4-4).
