Vaccine Shaming

I think he is saying that some people that have issue with govt telling them what to do in some instances are fine with the govt telling people what to do if it is based on their religious beliefs. For example, they are against mask mandates but they are fine with the govt telling gay people they can't marry because it is agreeable with their religious beliefs
Now, that I can understand. Perhaps you should sign on as an interpreter. Have you heard the comedian who talks about the movie Nell? It kinda fits.

My 78 year old mom got hers today. I thought pigs would fly and monkeys would shoot out of my ass before that happened. I think she was pissed i knew she got it.

To put things in perspective, she thought this news article was real (no, it had nothing to do with her getting the vaccine).

When push comes to shove, I think you'll see a lot of those who have been open and loud in their Covid skepticism quietly getting their vaccines. It's easy to stand on "principle" when your own well being isn't on the line (if only in your own head). Once that perception gets shifted -- that it actually would be in your best interest to get the vaccine (and no one has to know) -- the people will alter their behavior accordingly.

Yep. I have read that things are slowly shifting. I think some will get it but not admit it to anyone.

Being an agnostic (at best) for many years, I'm not sure what you are talking about. While I try to respect people's religious views, I do not give a opinion based upon religion more credibility than any other point of view. What are you trying to say?

Conservatives say they are for individual freedom yet want to tell you what you can do with your body, want to have prayer in school and God all over govt, want capital punishment and want a closed gate society to keep out those aren't lined up with white... I mean 'western, Christian' culture etc.

So if you can fit into those constraints then yes, conservatives are for individual freedom and less govt interference.

George Carlin once said a bunch of the white men wanted to be free while also wanting to own the black man, to eradicate the red man and to move the brown man.

Thanks fascist. Can we get a badge for anyone with hepatitis or HIV as well? What if they get a cut and somehow I come in contact with it? The flu kills, I guess I am going to need a flu shot and proof you are up to date on that vaccine before I can let you on the plane? Have not had time to do that yet? Tough shit. Sucks to be you.

All bow to our corporate masters. Do I need to get a physical before I can buy a ****ing apple? Our health information is no concern of McDonalds or Kroger. We have been allowed on flights for decades with no issues without having to show our papers. Why the **** is this very survivable virus now a lynchpin for handing over private information to United Airlines? Its. None. Of. Their. ****ing. Business.
A rediculous over reaction to a real and temporary issue. I absolutely have the right to know if I am boarding with people who made the decision to not get jabbed. I know to keep clear of them for safety and avoid listening to their maga sheep mantra.

Didn't they try an airline for smokers back in the day?
United States

1979: Cigars and Pipes banned on aircraft

1988: Smoking banned on US Domestic flights under 2 hours

1990: Smoking banned on US Domestic flights under 6 hours

1998: Smoking banned on all US Domestic flights

2000: Federal law introduced banning smoking on all flights by US airlines.

Wow. You post about a ridiculous overreaction and keeping clear of people talking about maga sheep mantra, while saying “I absolutely have the right to know if I am boarding with people who made the decision not to get jabbed.”

No, you don’t have that right. You don’t have the right to know anything about others. But I can foresee our political idiots agreeing with you. The rate we are going there will be registries for vaccines, guns, mental health, meat eaters, and maybe tooth decay in the way we now have sex offender registries.

Yes let's hope there's a license system registry to own a deadly weapon like we have to drive a frikken car or to operate on another person or to even catch a fish.

You want a gun, pass the test and get a license that registers you. You beat your wife or use the gun inappropriately then just like a drivers license you get it suspended.

If you have a gun without a license it big trouble for you.

Simple as that.

Are you cool with me stockpiling bombs in my basement for the right to bear arms?

What if I was your neighbor?

So yes, it's beyond dumb that we don't have a gun registry.

I would be ok if all the maga idiots got tagged so we would know who is brain dead. Maybe we could herd them together and build a wall around them. They love walls after all and they could put up a sign saying no minorities allowed. Could pull a trump and separate the adults from the children, although i am sure that would piss off some of the pedophile magas.
You tell ‘em, Grover!

Next Thursday I have my J&J "unblinding" clinical trial appointment.

I will find out if, back in December, I received the J & J "real thing", or a placebo shot. 50-50 odds. If I received the placebo, I will then get the real thing. Either way, I will know where I stand.

My shot was Dec 21. I had no reaction, whatsoever. On Dec 24 my daughter flew in, apparently contracted Covid on the flight, got sick 5 days later, and tested positive on Jan 2. I developed mild symptoms on Jan 1, tested positive on Jan 4, recovered in about 5 days, other than tiredness lasting about a month. tested negative Jan 13th, and ever since.

My case was very mild, so either 1) I was lucky, or 2) the 3-4 days between vaccination (if it was real) and Covid exposure gave me enough antibodies to fight it off, fast.

I am guessing that I got the placebo, since I had no reaction to the shot at all, not even injection site pain.

Don't forget busts of Nathan Bedford Forest, Traitor to the US and founder of the KKK. They LOVE that stuff in courthouses, public parks, etc.

Gee, thanks, professor science! I would have never found anything out without your incredibly informative post!
Some of you clowns make it up as you go, so I try to help where I can...even in small ways.

Desantis and this new GOP position that freedom means telling a private businesses they can’t hang a “no shirt no shoes no service” sign is a little mind bending.
I remember those signs. I walked in without pants.

Taking the debate about airlines (or other items) in a different direction, suppose someone had the flu, should they be allowed to board a plane, attend a basketball game, or whatever without disclosing it? Do people have a right to willfully infect others? Who has the compelling right, person A to travel while sick or person B to travel without getting sick?
They do fly and attend games with the flu.

They do fly and attend games with the flu.
They do, but should they? We need people to be more responsible and there is no other term for people that do that but irresponsible.

Oh wait, selfish comes to mind as well. So two phrases, selfish and irresponsible.

They shouldn’t, but who is going to decide who should and shouldn’t get on the plane? Do we want to live in a world where some gate attendant decides who should get in or not? I’m thinking no.

I don't know, maybe fever checks should stay. I think darwinism is not as attractive as some.

I am hoping businesses develop policies for employees. It is particularly bad in the restaurant industry which is a "don't work, don't get paid" industry.

We have been lucky, SARS-COV-2 is bad, but there are far worse diseases we may/will face.

I would really appreciate the board's thoughts on vaccine shaming. Prior to the vaccine being available, mask shaming was, and remains, a very prevalent issue throughout our society.

To be clear, I have zero issues with any of the available vaccines. I fully support each person's decision to either receive the vaccine or to not receive the vaccine. I will always be a firm believer in a person's healthcare decisions being a private matter and not something that is up for discussion unless that person so chooses.

Unfortunately for me, my wife's family has been pushing me and her to receive the vaccine. Upon learning that we are holding off for now, they were mortified and began lecturing us on why that is a terrible decision. Quite frankly, our decision is none of their business, just as their healthcare decisions are none of our business. We are the only family members remaining who have NOT received the vaccine. We do not have any individuals within either of our families who are in the at-risk category.

To be clear, we have gone out of our way to adhere to the health and safety protocols outlined by the CDC. We have also made a conscious effort to stay away from elderly people as well as those with pre-existing conditions. I'll gladly wear a mask and maintain social distancing when required.

Thoughts?

I appreciate your willingness to adhere to safety protocols. That’s huge. I’m in TX, and let’s just say there are severely uninformed people here when it comes to respecting others during this pandemic.

I’d like to ask you a question. What’s the reason for your hesitation? To have a better discussion, it would be helpful to know more about why you’re hesitant. I totally understand why folks are hesitant. It’s brand new technology, and it was developed REALLY fast.

I’ve got pictures on my phone of normal lungs vs smokers lungs vs COVID lungs. The COVID lungs are off the charts nasty.

Whenever someone says they’re hesitant about the vaccine, I show them the pictures. I don’t say anything else- the pictures tell the story.

If you haven’t researched what COVID does to a person, I’d suggest you do that right now. Especially if you’re eligible now to receive the vaccine.

Start with checking out pictures/scans of lungs.

Not only that, but even a mild case of COVID can produce “long haul” symptoms. Basically all kinds of weird chit starts happening to your body, and there’s no real rhyme or reason to what happens. Perfectly healthy people pre-COVID have become essentially disabled after having it.

That’s exactly why I got vaccinated as soon as I was eligible. I’m around too many people all the time to take chances. Either spreading COVID unknowingly or bringing it home to my family were risks I just couldn’t take. I’m super careful and have a several protocols to keep from contracting COVID.

Full disclosure- the first shot gave me headaches. I never have headaches. The second shot gave me chills & flu-like symptoms. Turns out those responses are actually a great thing- my body was producing antibodies against COVID. Quite frankly, I would’ve been worried that the vaccine didn’t “take” if I felt perfectly fine after the shots. I’m quite sure it “took” ;).

Both of those (temporary) responses were WELL worth it to avoid having COVID and what comes with it immediately and potentially down the road.

I know that the vaccines were developed very quickly, and that’s a little scary. Quite frankly, they are a scientific miracle.

However, having COVID is MUCH scarier. You might be perfectly fine, you might get really sick or you might even develop long term health issues. And you could develop long term symptoms even if you weren’t that sick when you had COVID. You’re basically playing a game of Russian roulette with your health if you have access to a vaccine and don’t take advantage of it.

Just a few things to think about.

They shouldn’t, but who is going to decide who should and shouldn’t get on the plane? Do we want to live in a world where some gate attendant decides who should get in or not? I’m thinking no.

I get what you’re saying, but...

Let’s frame the issue the correct way.

The flight attendant had nothing to do with whether someone chose to obtain a vaccination when it was offered to them. For free, no less.

The “action” in your scenario was someone refusing to get a free vaccine shot (or two). The flight attendant/airline employee is merely following a safety protocol based on the outcome of the traveler’s previous decision.

I’m scheduled to fly to AZ in early May. If I didn’t have my vaccination + 2 weeks time passed, there’s no way I would be making the trip.

That’s called “responsibility”. And respecting the safety of those around me. They are the same reasons why I’ve done things like always wearing a mask and keeping distance from others during the pandemic.

We enforce responsibility/safety in many different ways in this country. We’ve done so for years. Think of things like banning smoking in public, speed limits and safety belts in vehicles.

More on point, it’s not much different than school systems requiring children attending their schools to have standard vaccinations. Either you conform to widely accepted health measures, or you don’t. If you don’t, then you lose the ability to participate.

Those are all examples where we, as a country/society decided that it was irresponsible to continue to do certain things, and that for the good of public health, it was better to draw some lines. In the grand scheme of things, getting a vaccination to do “normal” things again is a very minor sacrifice.

Also, private companies can make decisions on what’s best for their business and their customers/employees. If enough people agree, they’ll be fine. It cracks me up to see how some people distort what “freedom” means to fit their particular world view. I’m NOT saying that’s you, BTW.

In short, actions have consequences. If a company chooses to not allow non vaccinated people to fly at a certain point (ideally 2-3 months after it became really easy to obtain shots), I don’t really understand why someone would be upset.

Just my .02. I’m sure some will agree, and others will disagree. That’s what makes this country great, IMO.

The EU will have a strict Green Pass system for everyting from boarding planes to eating in a restaurant.

We need at least 70% vaccinated, maybe 80%. Without that, this lingers. If we get there without you, fine.

COVID is a bit different than some diseases. Measles vaccine is dangerous to more people. Those same people are at real risk to measles. So we need to vaccinate everyone we can to save the people who cannot get vaccinated.

It appears far fewer have major health concerns with COVID, so the people at risk can get vaccinated.

At the moment, I would not say shaming is the answer. At the same point explaining that millions have been vaccinated and no one is dying or suffering long-term health issues. So suggesting people reconsider there decision isn't shaming but also I think a good idea.

70-80% is the goal. Let's get there
Naaah....and not true.

Don't visit over here much any more...dropped in to post some common sense, but I can see the stupidity train keeps a chuggin' along.

That's actually quite rare. More likely to contract it in other ways.
Yeah,,, the air on a plane is actually exchanged with fresh air every 2-4 minutes and it's run thru HEPA filters. Besides that the circulation is not like a house where the air is circulated throughout the plane. Of course there is bleed over air but it's mainly circulated within a row.
