USA Today/Coaches: No. 23

Probably a lot......

more accurate for this team than was the #1 rating we received a few years ago. It's only the rating at the end of the season that means anything.

Re: Probably a lot......

I think at certain points of that ill-fated season, we were the best team in the country.

Yep....

....after that tough win AT East Lansing, we were without a doubt the best team in the country.

Wheels fell off after that.

I would agree...

but the same could be said for a lot of teams during a season. I don't think the season was as ill-fated as were expectations. We won the conference, lost in the conference tournament, and lost to a team that was measurably better than us in the NCAA.

Our shooting was suspect at times, particularly in the 'Cuse game, and that allowed them to weakside double Cody without fear of reprisal from the outside.

Worst kind of loss at MSU

Losing at MSU usually isn't anything to get worked up about. The bad thing about our only loss in the conference this year is that we were never in a position to win the game or compete.

If you noticed, we got down big quickly against Illinois but came back. MSU and Illinois aren't the same teams, but the team never fought back at MSU, but they did against Illinois.

The longer between bad effort games we have, the less likely we are to see that again. Bad shooting games are going to happen. Good teams find ways to win the game when the ball isn't falling for a big part of the game.

I'll be among those who have been suspect

To admit being pleasantly surprised. There's still a long way to go, and I'm still hoping we can get to a point where our expectations are much higher than just making the tourney, but for this year's team to be where it is ... Ill take it.

In any case, the next couple of games could obviously move the needle quite a bit. Looking forward to seeing where we land next week.

I would guess, IU will go 6 and 7

To finish out the year. That will put us at 10 and 8 in the BIG and 20 and 11, overall. Will that get us in the big dance?

Re: Worst kind of loss at MSU

When the shots don't fall for this team, the game results will usually be pretty predictable, but that's true for most teams. Explain Duke's recent losses by 20 and 12, and then rolling over Louisville. Pitino said it pretty well when he said his team couldn't throw it in the sea much of the time, and particularly in that game.

a nice flip of fortunes - IU: No. 23

MSU, O$U and Bulter: Also receiving votes

It won't last but I'll enjoy it while it stands.

I was going through some stuff to put a potential preliminary bracket

together. As it is, I'm finding really only about 39-41 teams worthy of the 37 at large spots. So the bubble appears to be really soft again. I think 20-11 would get IU a bid at this point (not sure yet of what seed).

Right now, I'd say the last four in are OSU, MIA, BYU and MISS (yes, MIA has the win over Dook, but also a horrid loss at home to Eastern Kentucky and their schedule like ours was relatively soft). First four out would be ALA, WASH, TENN and DAV.
