Urban Meyer is a D-Bag

Between Paterno, Dantonio, and now Meyer, the Big Ten has a problem with football coaches covering up abuse.

"Texts show Urban Meyer knew of domestic violence" is an understatement. If you read McMurphy's full post, it says that Meyer had his friends pressure Smith's wife to drop charges from an incident in 2009.

Urban will not survive this and he shouldn't. He has given interviews where he said a coach who would lie to cover up abuse should be fired. Tressel lied about free tats and was fired. I see no way Meyer can or should survive this.
As a Buckeye football fan since 1957 I am not worried about the program at all. It will survive and prosper with a very good coach moving forward.

Kevin Wilson? ;)

When did he lie to cover up the abuse? What did he say that was a lie? Not saying he didn't.....just asking for specifics.

The McMurphy post includes text messages between where the victim tells Meyer's wife about the abuse (general assumption that she would then tell Meyer). Then there are texts between the victim and an assistant coaches wife where the victim is told that Meyer and the victim's husband have discussed allegations, although he denies.

We don't know if Meyer dug any deeper. He could have performed the necessary due diligence and not found enough to fire the victim's husband. But Meyer didn't indicate that, he denied ever knowing about it, which is a flat out lie

I think in any case of potential abuse cover up, there always can be debate about whether the right people or people in authority did "enough" to look into and correct the situation. However, that's not what usually draws the most ire. In almost every case, the people accused of cover up deny knowing about it (or at least the extent), but are then found be lying about that, in which case it is a major red flag that they actually didn't do enough and were active and knowing participants in the cover up.

IU covered up Wilson’s player abuse and off-field conduct for years so they don’t get a pass here either.

No, they dealt with it. That's why he's no longer here.

Yeah, I think could argue that IU could/should have been more proactive about dealing with Wilson, but I don’t think there was ever a cover up.

Plus, the allegations of abuse didn’t come out until several weeks after Wilson was gone, so it’s not like IU was scrambling in response to bad PR.

There was no cover-up at IU. And, as someone else pointed out, Wilson was canned. And, hold on. Are you actually trying to equate the two situations? . Smith allegedly beat up his wife in Gainesville and was arrested. Despite that history, Meyer then re-hired him at OSU. During this time, there were repeated calls to the police, and allegations of repeated physical abuse, including during a pregnancy. You're comparing the Wilson situation with this? Are you effing kidding me?

Wilson did other stuff that the university kept hidden. And Wilson was not canned immediately after the school found out he was abusing players.

I can understand that you could be privy to non public info regarding Glass handling of Wilson (and Curt Miller as you have alluded to previously), and this has colored your opinion of Glass negatively. That would be a fair point.

However, the fact that you nitpick relatively minor stuff and aren’t banging the drum about the allegedly more serious things, makes it SEEM like you either are making stuff up or those things aren’t as serious as you are suggesting.

This is a huge story that is not going away. Just google "Urban Meyer," and then click on "news." Was just the lead story on "Around the Horn" and it was suggested that his job could be in jeopardy.

Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave while the university investigates.

This is an amazing development. I've thought for years that phony Urban had become completely untouchable. Bet he thought so too.

All that said, 10-1 he ends up at Notre Dame if Kelly falters over this season or next. I mean hey, they have no trouble hanging onto a guy who's covered up everything from getting a kid killed, to rape, to multiple other lesser transgressions, all in the name of hopefully bagging another National Championship and regaining past glory...

Wonder what Dakich has to say for his boyfriend now?

And how in the hell does Dantonio keep his job?!?

I'm wondering the same about Dantonio. As for Notre Dame, they won't touch him with a 1000 foot pole now.

I don't think so (ND). He's damaged goods and hiring him after this debacle wouldn't sit well with their influential alums.

Meyer has, in the past, arrogantly described his system as "infallible." Maybe the system is, but he sure as hell isn't.

Yes, there's a serious need for a cleanup at MSU as well. In addition to the storm clouds swirling around athletics, Dantonio's getting up there (in age). He always looks like he hasn't slept in weeks. Wouldn't be surprised if the University finalizes an exit strategy with him within the next 1-2 years.

And Harbaugh's position might be precarious as well - - not because of scandals but because they're not winning enough. Allen might end up being one of the more senior head coaches in the division before too long.

I'm betting that they pull an M$U and keep him...

Meyer to University of Kentucky in 2020. Confirmed.
Any guy who beats his wife or his girlfriend is either sick or a dirtbag. And if he's sick and doesn't quickly get professional help, then he's a dirtbag. And anyone who protects and/or enables an abuser is a dirtbag. Let's see how this plays out but if it turns out that Meyer turned a blind eye to this, then even Kentucky will be too good for him.

Specifically, what was his involvement with "murder?" Are you talking about actual homicides or simply inferring that the players weren't disciplined for infractions of university rules or minor criminal offenses?

Aaron Hernandez was a suspect in an attempted homicide during Meyer's tenure at UF.

There were other players in the car with him when it happened. He was also involved in non-deadly altercations as a Gator, was rumored to fail multiple drug tests and yet he suited up every week. Good article a few years ago in Rolling Stone.

My mistake. Allegedly shot someone in the head in what was essentially an attempted execution.

I'm not surprised Kevin Wilson wasn't named the acting head coach, but I'm surprised they went with Ryan Day (no previous head coaching experience) over Greg Schiano.

Here's my thing....

He knew of the incident in 2009. It happened again in 2015. He and his wife knew to some degree. Why didn't they try to get this woman some help? Why didn't they try to get the coach some help? You know what you DON'T do.....nothing. They showed no real concern for the victim or the employee. That's fireable in and of itself.

The lying and the coverup is just more reason.
