how bout we reinstate the ban on the US exporting crude oil, which Trump and his partners in crime did away with during Trump's administration.

if we weren't exporting it, we wouldn't have to import it.

and how bout if Trump in spring of 2020 hadn't strong armed the Saudis into cutting oil production 2.5 million barrels PER DAY. (which i don't think the Saudis have increased since, and can't help but wonder if Trump isn't asking them not to).

and SA and others to cut production 9.7 million barrels per day.

WASHINGTON/LONDON/DUBAI (Reuters) - As the United States pressed Saudi Arabia to end its oil price war with Russia, President Donald Trump gave Saudi leaders an ultimatum.

In an April 2 phone call, Trump told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that unless the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) started cutting oil production, he would be powerless to stop lawmakers from passing legislation to withdraw U.S. troops from the kingdom, four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

---------
Trump delivered the message to the crown prince 10 days before the announcement of production cuts. The kingdom’s de facto leader was so taken aback by the threat that he ordered his aides out of the room so he could continue the discussion in private, according to a U.S. source who was briefed on the discussion by senior administration officials.

--------------------
A senior U.S. official told Reuters that the administration notified Saudi leaders that, without production cuts, “there would be no way to stop the U.S. Congress from imposing restrictions that could lead to a withdrawal of U.S. forces.”

-------------------
On April 12, under pressure from Trump, the world’s biggest oil-producing nations outside the United States agreed to the largest production cut ever negotiated. OPEC, Russia and other allied producers slashed production by 9.7 million barrels per day (bpd), or about 10% of global output. Half that volume came from cuts of 2.5 million bpd each by Saudi Arabia and Russia, whose budgets depend on high oil-and-gas revenues.
On March 16, Cramer was among 13 Republican senators who sent a letter to Crown Prince Mohammed reminding him of Saudi Arabia’s strategic reliance on Washington. The group also urged Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to investigate whether Saudi Arabia and Russia were breaking international trade laws by flooding the U.S. market with oil.

----------------------------
On March 18, the senators – a group that included Sullivan of Alaska and Ted Cruz of Texas – held a rare call with Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi ambassador to the United States. Cramer called the conversations “brutal” as each senator detailed the damage to their states’ oil industries.

After prolonged and fractious negotiations, top producers pledged their record output cut of 9.7 million bpd in May and June, with the understanding that economic forces would lead to about 10 million bpd in further cuts in production from other countries, including the United States and Canada.

------------------------
Trump hailed the deal and cast himself as its broker. “Having been involved in the negotiations, to put it mildly, the number that OPEC+ is looking to cut is 20 Million Barrels a day…” he tweeted shortly after the deal.

Let me tell you what's not fake, cost of living is through the roof with no end in sight. Everything Tucker says about Biden administration is true. Hell your side doesn't even know the difference between a man from a woman. Every time you fill up your car, remember to give an environmentalist a hug!

It is so great that all of trumps policies disappeared when he left office

They'd rather pay 70 dollars a gallon than have orange man bad back in office.

Yup on Day one with all the executive orders Biden started. SMH You guys are as bad as your fearless leader blaming everything on someone else. Anyone who's ever had a family member with an alcohol or drug issue knows full well what that family member with issues does. Blames everyone else.

No accountability from the WC left and it runs right up there with your admin...OWN IT.

TRUMPFLATION..

I am not a Trump fan, but this post makes zero sense when one remembers the time in question. It was right after the start of the pandemic and oil prices were going negative. Oil explorers were on the brink of bankruptcy and some did falter.

Of course the President would look out for US interests and protect US companies. I would hope any President would do that.

As for banning exports, IIRC, that was early during his term in order to ween us of foreign oil, to make us energy independent. Again, I don't see making us energy independent as a bad thing.

This post isn’t completely factual. Pretty sure Obama opened 2015 to exporting. I was in the oilfield at that time and the pandemic shuttered the oilfield. The decline was on already. Perfect storm. Trump would’ve had a hard time with oil right now. We are having trouble getting workers as is the oil companies. Rigs are slowly coming on line. OPEC is way more reactive than the US is.

Some things don't really add up. I know it's blamed on distribution, but profit-taking seems to also be a driver.

Oil was $180 a barrel in 2008 and USA gas costs peaked @ $4.11/gallon
Oil is $120 a barrel today and USA gas costs have reached $4.96/gallon

Labor and other expenses are much higher today. Profit margin for say XOM has not changed much over the past decade plus.

The charts actually show most recent net profits as high as they've been since 2013.

If Biden comes out attacking them and threatening their future wouldn't they do everything they can to walk the line of gouging. Who knows what their future. Have to get all you can now right?

Yes, the original dumbass poster was wrong. Congress repealed in late '15 when Obama was President. He also fails to mention that the Dems have controlled Congress and the presidency since early '21, and have not moved to reinstate the ban. The attached story also indicates there was an "epic supply gut" in '16..........not now.

when in that time have the dems had enough power to have a filibuster proof majority?

Can't do much when the other side won't vote in favor of anything. Takes more than just 50/50 split to ignore the idiots in the room ;)

Has Biden ever talked about doing so? Has any national Dem ever talked about doing so?

Not that I am aware of but I don't recall Trump talking about it either.
I’m not sure why everyone is so entrenched in their own parties to see there is plenty of blame to go around. Trump did nothing substantial to make oil cheap. Covid helped that. Oil prices were deflating before Covid. Laying off, rig count was down. When he spouted he wanted oil to be cheap I laughed. The cheaper oil gets the less exploration the US does. Problem now is trying to get those rigs drilling again. Not enough workers are going back. The oil companies are also sitting on record number of contracts. OPEC still drives this bus I don’t care who is number one.

This is on the Biden administration! You and your President are failures!

So what? It's the margin that matters and that has stayed fairly consistent. If my revenue last year was 1M and expenses 800k, net profit was 200k. If this year my revenue is 1.5M and expenses 1.2M, my net profit is 300k. Higher yes, but my margin is still 20%.

Your point?

Just that facts and figures and numbers may be correct, but they don't necessarily represent the truth. Didn't mean to insinuate you or Bawlmer were lying. Just stuck it in when we had competing facts and figures making opposite points.

"Fairly consistent." How much does .1 percentage point represent in dollars of revenue? And how much in terms of price at the pump?

"Fairly consistent." How much does .1 percentage point represent in dollars of revenue? And how much in terms of price at the pump?

Now you are switching to revenue from net profits and I am talking about margins. So 1Q22 revenue was 87B. Therefore, get out your calculator and take 87B times .1% to get your answer.

As far as your second question, I have no idea. There are many variables to factor.

If XOM was gouging, the shouldn't margins be significantly higher? Microsoft has a profit margin of 37%. Apple of 26%. FB is 31%. GOOGL is 27%. Chevron is 11%.

Maybe congress needs to have a hearing on big tech gouging.

There are no opposite points. Bawlmer showed he knows little to nothing about business not knowing the difference between margins and net profits. Then he switched to revenue in a later post to try to prove something. IDK what.

The bottom line is XOM's margins (and CVX) have been consistent for the past decade. They are not gouging.

I'm surprised MSFT isn't higher. They make something once and then force it down everyone's throats millions upon millions of times.
