I'm interested in some theories as to what Trump's strategy with this sort of thing is.

Clearly it's trolling. Clearly he hates the press. Clearly he's trying to play to the 'Murica! crowd with the Gulf of America thing.

But assuming that he's not just gone full Caligula (which isn't a slam dunk assumption), there has to be some kind of an explanation for what he's trying to accomplish. Is it part of his flooding the zone strategy -- by putting something out there that is at once so stupid and meaningless, but also certain to garner lots of attention?

Is it demonstrating to the press that he knows how to push their buttons and make them dance?

Not sure, but I do like the change. Gulf of America really does have a nice ring to it.

The AP is too stupid to be in the Oval Offfice.

Just glancing at a map it appears that we do have more coastline in contact with it than Meh-e-co...

Can't say it bothers me much one way or another but if the Democrats hate it, I'm for it; they haven't been on the right side of history for awhile now...

He's just screwing with his detractors and throughly enjoying it... Like I said: be happy he's not a drinker...

The Gulf of Mexico was named in 1550. 225 years before the United States existed.
Back then, the Spanish controlled essentially the entire southern portion of North America.
Florida was ceded to America in 1819, Louisiana in 1803 (Louisiana Purchase), and Texas in 1845.

So Mexico (/Spanish) owned the majority of the gulf for ~300 years. We've had the majority of it for ~180.

This is such a dumb thing. It changes nothing as far as territorial waters go. Very few, if any, nautical charts will be changed.

Mexico didn't "own" the gulf. They have territorial waters that extended 12 miles into the gulf same as the US did and does. This does not change with the name, which really isn't going to change.

If intelligence matters, why is Trump allowed in the oval office?

He’s making moves your limited intellect is incapable of appreciating. At first blush I thought why is Father doing this stuff. Why is this our focus? This wasn’t the campaign pledge.

We didn’t know what we needed.

Hegemony.

We’re re-establishing our standing and reminding Mexico and, more importantly, Denmark, where they are in the pecking order.

So if Americans have to miss a meal a day. So be it. Theyll be full from pride.

I'm ready to run through wall!

'Merica first, bitches!

Next does the Atlantic Ocean become the East American Ocean, while the Pacific becomes the West American Ocean?
Funny thing is that I’ve seen that some in Facebook think because the President renamed the Gulf to Gulf of America we own it. Actually, that kind of ignorance isn’t funny.

Also, America isn’t US specific. It’s kind of nice it’s named for all of the American countries.

Who are they trolling and how is this a demonstration that he's the President of all of us?

Well, I’d guess that they’re trolling the people who tore down statues, insisted on changing names of military bases and pancakes, etc.

As for the last question…it’s Donald Trump, Aloha. Trolling is part of his very essence. I’m not defending it, just explaining it.

It could be the skull fkking he and Putin are getting ready to do to Ukraine, which party only he and Putin are allowed to attend to determe their fate.

This certainly sucks.

But unless we or Europe was willing to actually put troops into the theatre, it’s been the outcome I’ve expected for quite a while.

Neither side has been gaining or losing anything of late, as far as I know. And it would be pointless to continue committing lives and resources just to draw out a stalemate.

Lots of people say that Europe’s security is on the line here, etc. But it hasn’t escaped my attention that nobody (including us) has been acting that way. And actions speak louder than words.

Your last point is clearly correct. It was all empty rhetoric.

Some of these flood the zone nonsense ideas are truly bizarre, like he's sitting on the throne pinching out a hooky and it just comes to him. Well, maybe while he reads a cliffs notes version of Project 2025.
