Rare unwanted air
With back-to-back home losses to begin Big Ten play, Indiana has entered the kind of rarified air it wants no part of. In the 112 years in which Big Ten basketball has existed, the Hoosiers have started conference play 0-2 just 26 times. Of those 26 times, 10 occurred prior to World War II.
Just once, in 1979-80, did Indiana start 0-2 and go on to win the Big Ten championship, so the odds are clearly stacked against this season’s Hoosiers successfully defending their title.
Furthermore, this marks just the third time Indiana has ever started 0-2 with both losses coming at home. The other two occasions were in 2010-11 and 1985-86.
Bottom of the barrel
In addition to the 0-2 record Indiana will carry into Saturday’s game against Illinois, the Hoosiers have some statistics to back their poor start up.
In Big Ten games only, IU ranks 13th in the Big Ten in scoring defense at 81 points per game, 14th and last in field goal percentage defense at .492, tied for last in 3-point field goal percentage defense with Michigan at .500 and last in turnover margin at minus-6.0 — Purdue is next worst at minus-3.5.
The lone redeeming statistical marker for Indiana is rebounding, as the Hoosiers are first in the conference in offensive rebounding (15 per game), offensive rebounding percentage (.449) and rebounding margin (plus-6.5).
Hoosiers on the rise
The IU women’s basketball team is off to a 2-1 start in Big Ten play for the first time since 2010-11 and with a win at Michigan on Tuesday would improve to 3-1 for the first time since 2008-09.
The Hoosiers’ win over Minnesota on Wednesday gave Indiana its first back-to-back wins over the Gophers since 2006-07.
Minnesota entered the game at No. 24 in the RPI, making it IU’s best win of the season to date. The upcoming Wolverines are No. 37.

Al Durham, 6-4, G, Lilburn, Ga., 2017: Finished with 15 points in a 60-44 win over Wando (S.C.), 18 points in a 68-57 loss to Burlington School (N.C.) and 16 points and six rebounds in a 62-56 win over Greater Atlanta Christian in the third-place game of the Roundball Classic in Charleston, S.C., last week.
Clifton Moore, 6-10, F, Horsham, Pa., 2017: Had 17 points and six rebounds in a 54-36 loss to Plymouth Whitemarsh on Tuesday on the heels of 16 points and six rebounds in a 56-51 loss to Father Judge in the championship game of the Triangle Tournament last week.
Justin Smith, 6-7, F, Lincolnshire, Ill., 2017: Led his team to the consolation championship of the Hinsdale Holiday Classic, scoring 18 points in a 47-42 loss to host Hinsdale Central, then posted 25 points, 15 rebounds and four assists in a 65-46 win over Crete-Monee, had 26 points and nine rebounds in a 57-22 win over St. Viator and finished things off with 17 points and eight rebounds in a 56-41 win over St. Charles East.

Alexis Johnson, 6-1, F, Houston, Texas, 2017: Kinkaid went 1-2 at the Naples Holiday Shootout. Scored 17 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter of the lone win, a 61-49 comeback over Morgan Park (Ill.).
Linsey Marchese, 6-4, C, Lawrenceville, Ga., 2017: Scored 24 points in a 64-44 win over Dorman (S.C.) and 28 points in a 76-71 overtime victory against Westwood (S.C.) at the Farm Bureau Insurance Classic in Roebuck, S.C., last week.
Jaelynn Penn, 5-9, G, Louisville, Ky., 2017: Butler won the Winterfest Shootout over Sevier County (Tenn.), 62-22, last Friday. Individual stats not available.
