Doing it on defense
The real meat of the season still lies ahead, but the early returns are rather positive for the Hoosiers on the defensive end of the floor. Opponents are shooting just 37.5 percent from the field for the year after Indiana held Houston Baptist to 37.9 percent (25-of-66) Saturday, the fifth consecutive game IU has held its opponent under 40 percent. That streak, which includes limiting North Carolina to 39.3 percent, is the longest such streak since the 2012-13 season.
It’s a similar story for the 3-point defense, which gave up just 2-of-17 shooting against HBU. That 11.8 percent effort was the lowest by an Indiana opponent since Minnesota was 2-of-18 from 3 on Jan. 30, 2016. For the year, opponents are shooting 25.1 percent (50-199) from 3 this season.
Even Indiana’s free-throw defense has been good this season, highlighted by Liberty going just 5-of-14 at the stripe, the worst mark by a Big Ten opponent this season. For the year, opponents are hitting at just a 64.3 percent clip on free throws against the Hoosiers.
Career careers
The Indiana women’s basketball team is seeing a number of its players hit career milestones and climb both school and conference lists this season.
The Hoosiers already have three 1,000-point scorers in Tyra Buss (1,177), grad transfer Amber Deane (1,138) and Alexis Gassion (1,062) with Amanda Cahill (948) on the cusp of joining them. They rank 12th, 13th, 15th and 19th among active scorers in the Big Ten.
It’s more of the same in rebounding, where Cahill (600), Gassion (595) and Deane (465) rank sixth, seventh and 14th among active conference players.
The Hoosiers are also well represented in assists with Deane (293), Buss (284), Gassion (256) and Cahill (157) ranking fifth, seventh, ninth and 18th among active players in the Big Ten.

Clifton Moore, 6-10, F, Horsham, Pa., 2017: Scored 20 points in Hatboro-Horsham’s 60-20 win over Springfield Township on Tuesday. Had 12 points and eight rebounds in a 39-36 loss to Council Rock South in the title game of the Hatters Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
