There's been so much complaining on this forum about what I now call, "The Tre Situation"...
"... he should have stayed..",
"... he did it all wrong..",
"... he did what was best for him and that's okay..."
"... I'm glad he's gone..."
"... I'm glad he left because I was able to move in on his girlfriend..."
Just about every opinion imaginable..
(BTW, I agree with Matt. Tre had every right to leave but the way he did it was wrong and I don't feel he deserves success on a football field because of that... I said on the football field...only)
But, that's not the point of this post...
Here's what I want to point out; something I have thought about ever since he left, yet I've never seen a post addressing this... and it's been what, a year and a half?
Let's go back to the "IU 10" from the John Pont era.. I remember it very well, even though I wasn't at IU at the time, I followed IU football as closely then as I do now. I have/had a couple of pretty good friends who were players on that team and over the years they've given me their own inside look at what happened and the personalities of several of the, "IU 10". The one thing they've all told me was that the players who walked out weren't treated any different than anyone else on the team and the protest had no merit. They were under pressure from a "particular union of students" to do what they did and they, unfortunately, did it.
Tre's grandfather is Larry Highbaugh.
I don't know how many on this board know that, but he was one of the leaders of the "IU 10" walkout and one of the strongest and most resistant to accepting any type of agreement with Pont and the IU staff unless it was under "their terms, only". The timing was a killer to that season and the future.
Before it was over, a few "IU 10" players came to their senses and realized that they weren't doing anyone - their teammates, IU, or themselves - any good and they returned, but the die was cast. IU football has never been the same, with as bright a future, as it was in the season before their walkout.
Larry Highbaugh, who most feel was a future all-big 10 receiver or kick returner, decided to leave the team for good. He stayed on at IU though and ran track, lettering 4 years.
Was he selfish? IMO, yes totally, but I'm over it....
And I say that based on what a few of his former teammates told me...
When I first heard that Tre was gone and the way it happened made me think immediately of his grandfather and what he, along with a few others, did to IU football. Tre's leaving is nothing compared to what happened with the "IU 10". It makes me wonder what kind influence he was given. Some people never stop holding a grudge.
Okay, back to today! BEAT IOWA!
