Transfer Portal is a bad option for recruiting

I understand why we have to do it this season but in the future, I think most of the kids who enter are the wrong type of kids for us. When you make a commitment, you should honor that commitment and not jump at the first shiny object you see. I think kids who enter that portal will be less coachable and I question their commitment. There are a couple of exceptions. One, if they go to play for a Coach and that coach is terminated or quits, I somewhat understand that player going into the portal. Second, if they are not contributing or living up to their hype and the Coach asks them to transfer, but that is not a player IU wants. Because of that, IU needs to avoid the portal as an option in the future and go after good kids with character that fit the IU mold. Kids that will honor their commitment and learn to see it through and learn to come out ahead even when their backs are up against the wall.

There's an old man yells at gif that would be perfect for posts like this.

I just want IU to get the best players and I don't care where they get them from. That said, ignoring the transfer portal as a way of improving the roster would put IU at a distinct disadvantage against every team across the country. I would hope IU exhausts all their options of improving the roster every offseason.

Check where Baylor got some of their guys

How many players say, “It’s a dream for me to play at (insert college name). That lasts until they sit on the bench. Take advantage of everything the ncaa allows.

Is there a Dean Garrett or Keith Smart out there, I doubt it but their quick transition to the '86/'87 program is the best case scenario for transfers if your lucky... Yeah I know they were JACOs but the potential is the same... IU this year, might be late to that party...

Nice generalization.... Care to share anymore generalizations?

I can also understand the mid-major guys who give everything they have to a program for 3 years and want to experience what it feels like to play in the BT and in the tourney. Their coach is leaving for greener pastures in that situation if he can.....how can you blame the unsalaried player for doing so?

Wrong. It’s not 1985 anymore. The portal is there and would be pretty stupid not to use it annually. Like CMW said, the portal is a two way street.

If you want to win in today's game, the source of players has to be wide open - transfers, overseas recruits etc. The objective is to put the best five on the floor. If a kid comes to IU and isn't willing to put in the work, or be coached, why should he take up a slot that a transfer might be willing to take and capitalize on? Michigan has had the Wagner boys, it is time to adjust and move into the 21st century (even though we are 20 years too late).

It's not 1985 anymore. The world is different. Society is different. Kids are different. I'm all for IU taking advantage of every NCAA policy, including the transfer portal.

This is just idiotic. A 17 year old kid should not be forced to make a 4-5 year commitment to someone/something that is free to change tomorrow with no consequence. These kids should do what’s best for them.

Choice is good. This isn’t a military service agreement. Colleges should be forced to continuously provide the most value to these kids or they should move on. Plenty of great options out there for them.

I agree, seems all big name coaches hate the portal. JC transfers are a better option. That's getting somebody that fulfilled their commitment and is ready to take to another level. Portal is just crazy this year, you don't know what you have or what to try and recruit. There is a option though, coaches should just say hey, if you don't know by xx/xx/xxxx, we are moving on ... you can finish your degree for free, but you won't be playing anymore

I do think the schollies could broken into 2 year commitments. If a kid wants out after 1 year then he sits a year. After 2 years the kid can do another 2 year schollie at the school of his choice or go pro. A scholarship commitment should be treated the same as signing a contract for the pros. Wish the NBA would be on board with this much like baseball.

Meanwhile a coach can walk away from a contract at any time.

No it's not, let's not pretend everybody out there on scholarship is Kobe or MJ. The real problem is that they force a Kobe to play 1 year of college at all ... really the NBA and not the NCAA.

Apparently you didn't pay for your own education and appreciate the cost... I did, close to done, but it's like a premium cable package bill every month for like 20 years.

Saying athletes should get to jump around on scholarship is like saying any student on scholarship if they don't like their classes ... refund, I think not.
It sucks, fortunately for my wallet, we've sucked so long that I'm happy now to listen to Fish broadcast us lose. Hope Woodson makes me subscribe to watch again.

I doubt we will hit the transfer portal as hard in the future. This has been a unique year with COVID protocols and the opportunity for players to transfer without sitting out for a year and adjustments in scholarship limitations. While this is not true of all transfers, the events of the past year may have made some athletes decide to play closer to home. I’m guessing that was one of the reasons RT waited this long to decide.

As some have said here, you can’t ignore the portal altogether. It’s part of college basketball now. RMK wasn’t real enthused about the 3-point shot but he sure took advantage of it.

This is already the case. What is your point?

I think the NCAA could adjust the details of eligibility for the Portal to having had completed their 2nd (Sophomore) Year academically before they can enter it *(unless the Head Coach leaves or is fired)... This might limit the "things are getting tough..., I'm leaving" crowd a bit...

Highly doubt that the above will happen but that might be one solution...

The difference in the portal this year is no wait time to play. Normally that year of waiting keeps many players from transferring. The portal this year is more like free agency in pro sports. Theoretically you could build team from the portal and replace your whole roster is you encouraged players to go into the portal. I think it is a bad policy because two or three really good players in college could, again theoretically, package themselves to one school to "win now". Not saying this is being done, but it encourages more bad behavior from unethical coaches and diminishes the importance of the first selection.

The best player in the tournament was a transfer from UK. Sometimes kids just don't work out in a system. Nothing wrong with finding a system that works best for you. In the real world most don't stay at jobs out of loyalty they switch based on what's best for them and their families.

Ok, trick question. What do you think of a player that enters the portal, hangs out there for a couple weeks, then decides not to transfer.

Espn radio had a guy this afternoon talking about the portal. Made a few points.
1. Clemson and Bama have been resistant to transfers and both beaten by transfers.
2. Some coaches are “escorting” kids to the portal to take their scholarship back.
3. He felt the portal was a negative but you have to use it.
Anybody remember the guys name or other points?

Tell that to the many mid range schools that benefit but sometimes lose their top players. Just need to adapt to change,

Oh boy - a non-sortable list with 1200+ entries. Somehow reminiscent of Haskins conjuring an NCAA finalist from scratch for UTEP.

If it was your call, anyone(s) in particular you'd key on for IU?
It's sortable. Scroll down to complete list, click on the header. Sort by stars, position, previous team, new team.

I’d take a Haris Mujezinovic at this point.

Way better version that appears to be updated more quickly than the VC one. Query by conference, school, player name, position.

NCAA official is VC.

And fwiw 247 is not maintained well.
Found VC today and did some spot checking. Didn't really notice much difference on the update, but small sample size obviously.

I'll get comfortable with VC about the time we're full.
