To paraphrase Simon and Garfunkel

I trust MAS and DANC believe what they write. I may disagree with them 99.99% of the time, but I have no doubt they believe it. I don't feel that way with CO. I think he loves playing games. Same with MTIOTF. It may come from being lawyer, who knows. I have no doubt both are extremely intelligent. MTIOF's brother said a while back that MTIOF is smarter than him. That may be, but Rockport's posts were much, much better and I wish he would come back. I think MTIOF and CO believe not just they are the smartest people here (and they might be) but they believe that gap is immense. I know from my high school days the smartest person I knew, maybe ever, was that way. He was easily bored so would argue any point, any time, about anything.

It might be the inner lawyer in them, must advocate all the time even if one's personal conviction is different. I don't know. I've met CO and had dinner with him, away from here I think we would do great. I think if I met MTIOTF at a football game we'd have a blast. But here, something seems way off with them compared to other conservatives. You are conservative, Sparty is conservative, Ranger, Twenty, Jamie, Crazy. I don't get the feeling any of you are here just playing a game. I certainly don't get that from MAS, DANC, or Farva either.

I don’t like being lumped in with Mas and DANC at the end. I troll occasionally, but my posts are more well thought out than theirs generally.

I agree with everything you write here Marv and in particular what you write with coh and mtiotf. it's pretty obvious.
You don't think I'm Conservative? What do you think I am, if not Conservative?

Since you asked--this guy's clone--in fact three of his clones in particular.

Tom Nichols wrote a very good book about The Death of Expertise and how people like you who think they know everything with an internet platform have given us a nation full of idiots. Arrogance, narcissism, cognitive dissonance, and various other attributes of modern society have caused massive distrust in credible institutions. Looks like you’re a part of that. Congrats!

If you can't make a point in a few sentences on a message board, you're not a good communicator.

Too many times, posters on this board equate length with effectiveness. It's not, particularly with the attention span of most posters here.

Ranger don't mean to speak for Coh but I think you're misconstruing what he's saying. I share his sentiment, generally. We see link, link, link, link on here and the lion's share of the time they're citing some guy on twitter that they trust because his account is verified; or an article from wapo etc. Just because the guy is a writer for wapo doesn't mean much anymore imo. and they're hardly experts. An example was the charges being filed in the Capitol riots. You can "link" to some wapo article or you can actually go straight to the DOJ site, read the charges, and think for yourself. We're substituting independent thought for the neverending link, link, link when most of these folks being linked are a far cry from "experts."

He isn’t speaking with nuance. He’s telling you exactly how he operates. Nobody is right but him. And if you are right he moves the goalposts. He cannot be reasoned with and is emblematic of why our politics are the way they are. He’s not alone by any stretch but smart people like him that are the way they are are the worst of us. Smart people listen to people smarter than them on certain topics and heed the expertise. He won’t have it.

Nuke plants have more security than military installations.

LMAO

you can drive right up to a nuke plant.

i've done it, post 911.

and we've had multiple attacks at military bases, but luckily they didn't render everything within X number miles uninhabitable for a zillion yrs.

Death of expertise? The first point is that the people generally believe the designation of “expert” means a person free of bias. That simply isn’t true. Beyond that, experts have ventured into policy, which is a mistake and weakens credibility. Finally that whole “science is settled” thing is decidedly unscientific.

Arrogance? Maybe. I admit to self confidence.

Cognitive dissonance? Yes. I think any thoughtful person has this in various circumstances.

Distrust of credible institutions? I think I agree. I enjoy raising questions about conventional wisdom snd established paradigms. Beyond that, many credible institutions have earned our distrust.

"expertise" is for sale, all day everyday.

it's not personal, it's just business.

Just waiting to be granted Mod Powers.
When that finally happens, can you create a separate board just for lawyers?
That would cut our numbers substantially, but sure would raise the level of discourse.

Then there would be the question of whether or not they would have to be actually practicing. If you can't get rid of COH and McM, why bother?

I assure you your online persona’s self-confidence extends well past arrogance. You can note and heed that or you can disagree. I won’t hold my breath.

You’ve never once given an inch in any argument -especially when the expert evidence (ewwwwww, right?) obviously refuted your position. Maybe it’s cognitive dissonance, but I think it’s smug assholery. Maybe that’s what made you a good lawyer - but if you behave anything like that outside of the courtroom it’s what makes you a lousy American.

Your arguments are worded so that you have a dozen exits built in to extricate yourself when the water starts to get too hot (meaning you’re being proven wrong). If you’re into escape porn, then you probably change your undies quite often.

when you don't represent yourself in your posting, it changes everything.

Co, probably like some others on both sides, isn't here representing just him/her self.

if only posters not just representing their own personal views could be banned, social media would be a zillion times better.

Oh you can drive right up to one so you can easily take it out then! They’re built to withstand earthquakes and tornadoes but IGW and his hatred for corporations can take it out!

Damage to nuclear plants can only be done from the inside (unless using military grade ordnance) - and the inside are better guarded than military installations.

On the contrary, I’ve actually listened to dozens of people on here and used their opinions and evidence as facts to change my view. COH prides himself on never doing this. He’s admitted such directly.

How’s the view? I bet it stinks.

One has to REALLY bend. He wrote this:

Green energy, wind, solar, and hydro performed the absolute worst during the power outage. Do you know the typical way wind turbines are winterized? They shut them down and then the turbines consume electricity from the grid in order to keep the generators and gearboxes warm. I don’t know if Texas did this or not
In cold weather the turbines suck power. The way to fix that is to have more thermal in reserve.

"In cold weather, wind turbines suck power" is not at all true. I linked a Forbes article how Norway runs turbines successfully to -22. They are not costing Norway energy, the produce energy. And his answer is to blast people for having weak minds and linking because he is smarter than any expert in any field anywhere.

Most people would back down and say that they made a mistake, he just doubles down.

Sadly he sounds more like Trump, recall Trump knows more about war than our generals.

I would pay money to watch CO play Magnus Carlsen and hear his excuse for losing. Sadly I suspect CO knows he would easily beat Carlsen.

Thanks for clearing that up.

You need to think about (along with goat, mark, marv and a few others) why it is is you post about me (and others). I dont talk about you guys (well i can think of rare exceptions). I've got my ideas why you do that which I have mentioned here from time to time.
We criticize your posting. Why you need to personalize that is a you problem.

When I use the "like" button, that usually shows I think a post is informative (meaning I learned something for those of you in Rio Linda), well written, or agreement with the content. I think I can safely say I have never "liked" a post that was critical of another poster. Look at the likes on your post. Too often on this board, posts slamming other posters attract "likes" as dog shit attracts flies. That tells me a lot about the board.

This is absolutely true.

It is true in many parts of the US and I explained why that is. There are reasons why engineering and building standards are localized for climate.
I wonder if Houston's airport carries de-icer?

They knew 10 years ago 1) they can get a winter storm 2) that it can cause blackouts. They held hearings, they vowed to winterize, they chose not to.

We have discussed it before, and you were not at that time a libertarian. Texas power is straight libertarian, no government oversight at all. Perry said as much as to why they are not part of the US power grid.

They had 10 years to either solve a problem they knew was possible because it had happened. They did nothing and act as if no one possibly could have foreseen it.

They weren't prepared for what happened. I don't think that's in question.
The question is should they have been prepared for the temperatures they experienced?
What is your take on Congress not budgeting properly for disaster relief?
We know there is a very good chance a hurricane makes landfall and does damage each year. Instead of budgeting for this they come back later and want more money to pay for an "emergency".

I don't know how to dumb it down for you any further. I pointed out that you threw out a false equivalency, because you did. It was a criticism of the content of your post. I suppose you take it personally because it feels like you're being attack on all sides, with me, Mark, Marvin, Ranger, all making similar criticisms of your posting. Well, maybe instead of getting defensive, you should genuinely consider why so many people find your posting so intolerable.

*Shrug* Whatever. I'm certainly not going to avoid pointing out when you make a dumb post because of the fear you will internalize it and construe it as a personal attack. If you can't handle people criticizing what you write, you should probably just go away.

Hold the phone there chief. You were the one who brought personal implications into this when you made the absurd call that people who use evidence are weak-minded.

And that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard on here (adjusting out @IU_Hickory and @VanPastorMan) posts.
