TJ Otzelberger

Big grain of salt, but the new rumor swirling around BTB is that Otzelberger's camp has reached out to IU. Unfortunately, the source of this information is the least connected person in college basketball (Rabjohns).

Goodman literally just floats names at the request of the agent. Ignore him. He did the same stuff for UK last year and all those guys got raises and had no real interest in leaving.

And it's 40 miles from Des Moines. Plenty to do there.
I'm biased but Des Moines is no Indy and Ames is no Bloomington. Option to go to Indy or Brown County is pretty cool Bloomington is one of the nicest campuses in the B1G (I've been to many of em--except the "newer" B1G campuses (USC, UCLA, Oregon, Wash, etc.)

I like IU's campus better than literally any that I've visited. As far as towns go though, I like Madison and Iowa City more than Btown. I live in Btown and I live it but if you've never been to Mad town, you should go.

I’ve never been to Bloomington. That said, UCLA is the nicest campus I’ve been to thus far, by a good margin. Madison is my favorite college town, excluding big cities like DC and LA.

Back to the topic at hand, I’d be pleased with TJO.

I prefer the "college towns". I forgot to mention Ann Arbor... Really nice town. Madison, Iowa City, Urbana Champaign, State College, and West Lafayette all fit the mold for what I think of as a college town. AA, Iowa City, Madison, Bloomington are all great. The others, meh. When I comes to big cities I'm still biased and Chicago is tops for me.

Yeah, if Otzelberger is who Scott chooses I'm more than happy with that. Watched his team short handed against Houston last weekend and they definitely left it all out there.

Agree Madison with the lake is awesome. I’m not a fan of Iowa city though.
I like Ames and ISU campus much better, it feels more like a college town.

After considering all the positives and negatives of each candidate, I think this guy would be the best option. No background noise, young, great coach, teaches D, low buyout, excellent record. With our NIL and recruiting base this man would be very successful here.

Don't really care for Goodman but I like this choice. Would he leave Iowa State though is the question.

I think he would be fine. Fine, as in, I would not be excited, but he would do okay.

His track record is mixed. I am not sure what happened at UNLV, but he did not really do that well at all.

Since taking the head job at Iowa State they have been good. He has gone to 2 sweet 16s in 3 years and made the tournament every year. He tied for 5th and 6th in the conference with one finish at 2nd. He is .571 in B12 play and .646 for his career at HC.

I would be more excited for him than Brownell for sure, but not a hire that I would be thrilled about.

He probalby doesn't leave either, but uses IU to get a raise. This is his third stint in Ames.

That all said, at this point, I do not see a realistic candidate I would be thrilled about. But maybe there is a suprise and a guy like Nate Oats wants to make a move to a true basketball school.

Ben McCollum and Grant McCasland are worth seeing how they finish the season along with Chris Jans and Todd Golden. With a strong finish and run in the NCAA they will surface as names for a lot of openings. Eric Olen is one to watch for the future - too early, but looks like a winner.

Otz has a strong presence on the sidelines. And Iowa State keeps getting better under his watch. They play great defense.

Hard to make much out of UNLV since those were the two COVID seasons.

I live near Ames and have ISU season tickets. My only knock on TJ that I have heard recently is that he is very demanding in practices and hasn't let up this late in the season. His team seems to be wearing down and the injuries haven't helped either. I would be ecstatic if IU could get him out of Ames.

My wife is an Iowa native and IOWA ST alum.
Yes Indiana is better than Iowa as far as the state goes. Iowa is not very populated and not much to do. Ames is a really good college town though.
Does Iowa have a lot of breaded tenderloins? It has been one of my joys coming back to Indiana.because in Pennsylvania the hey didn't have them

we'll all know what this means in a few weeks. But names keep getting scratched off the list.

Either means we've already got our man (not gonna speculate who), or we're beating the bushes and these programs are locking down their guys so we don't poach. Look what happened to Ind State...when you lose a coach in this market, in the portal/NIL era, you don't just lose your coach...you could lose your whole damn team.

sounds that way. Knows the natives won't turn on him if he doesn't reach the S16 within first 2 yrs.
If we make the tournament that will be 3 of 4 years. Very special for IU students that are seniors. We would have to go back to the Cody years to find a run like that.

sad that we would consider a couple early tourney blowouts and not even sniffing an B1G upper tier finish (let alone a championship) as anything 'special'. Low standards.

Why are so many people high on TJ? Why has he done that makes him many people’s top choice? I’ve watched and his personality, imo, wouldn’t be the best fit here?
