BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University sophomore midfielder Tanner Thompson was named first-team All-American Friday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
He is the first Hoosier to earn first-team All-America honors since defender Chris Estridge in 2011. Overall 39 Indiana players have earned a total of 62 All-America accolades.
Joining Thompson on the first team were GK Alex Bono (Syracuse) D Joseph Greenspan (Navy), Brandon Vincent (Stanford), Joshua Yaro (Georgetown); MF Jay Chapman (Michigan State), Patrick Hodan (Notre Dame), Leo Stolz (UCLA); F Andy Craven (North Carolina), Fabien Herbers (Creighton), Robbie Kristo (Saint Louis), Jordan Morris (Stanford). The Hoosiers faced off against Yaro, Chapman, Hodan and Kristo in 2014.
Thompson started all 22 matches in 2014, earning All-Big Ten first team honors while leading the team in goals scored (6) and total points (15). He was named one of 16 finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Two of Thompson's six goals were game winners, including his first of the season in a 2-1 victory at Rutgers. He also put home the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Ohio State in the semifinal round of the 2014 Big Ten Tournament.
